I just got back from an estate sale and am so excited! There was a sewing room full!!! I only got one bin of fabric for $6.00, all browns and other women ahead of me got the rest and there were 2 closets full. Wish i could have got there a little earlier. However her quilting books had no price and apparently no one had asked. I grabbed up 12 books and took them to the checkout. Cost $2.00/ book!!!! I got Volume 1,2, and 3 of Better Homes and Gardens Quilt -Lovers Favorites,Quilting with Fons and Porter, 365 Fun to stitch Quilt Blocks, Debbie Mumm's Quick Country Quilts for Every Room, The Thimbleberries Guid For Weekend Quilters, Quilting Pieces of the Past, and 3 books from Rodale's Successful Quilting Library. $ 2.00/each! I'm a happy camper!

I also got a recipe box filled with favorite recipes she had hand written for only a dollar. That made me sad that no one in her family wanted to keep her recipes labeled "Aunt Betsie's Chocolate Pecan Pie", Susan's Delicious meatloaf", etc. Surely someone in that family will wish they had some of these recipes to carry on traditions, don't you think?

maybe she already made the family their own copies.. I know my hubbys mom did that. I prepared a cook book complete with individualized for each decor of their childhood favs and then some other recipes that I found particularly fast ,easy and good... they loved it... hopefully they will cherish the hand written recipes

I use to do Estate Sales and I grieve over the many wonderful things that I sold that I could use today. I wasn't or didn't have time to sew then and I didn't buy things either - at least not until the last day.

I found a great garage sale one day - I found a quilter that was selling off all her stash. She had about 50 boxes of ironed folded unused fabric. All sorted by color and standing on end so it was easy to see. I went through and pulled some of all colors and then made up 3 boxes to buy. She was selling it $1 a piece and they were 1-2 yard pieces. I should have bought it all, but had no where to put it. :(

Dreaming 10-30-2010 07:24 AM

A couple of years ago, I was at an estate sale and in the garage there was boxes and boxes full of all kinds of different books. I actually found a box that was full of quilting books. So, I grabbed the whole box and told them I would give them $20 for the whole box. They said yes, I couldn't believe it. There was 25-30 books in it. I was in heaven!

Reminds me of a good song by Cheryl Wheeler

Estate Sale

Estate sale today, from 1 o'clock to 4
You go and get ready, I'll go start the car
Better to be early, then we'll be the first in line
And you know how I love this, it's amazing what you'll find

(Chorus)
Going through dead people's houses
Wonderful things they have collected
Open the drawers and trunks and closets
Don't leave a corner uninspected

I'll head for the kitchen you check out upstairs
Old post cards and pens and blue Fiesta Ware
Shaving mugs and winged eyeglasses, giant plastic pins
Linen suits and flowered dresses, I'm so glad we got in

(Repeat Chorus)

They just don't make 'em like this
It's an incredible prize
We can hang it in the kitchen
She was just your size
It's a beautiful frame
And the picture's all right
Salt and pepper airplanes
And that deco light

(Repeat Chorus)

Tonight we'll go home and sort through our array
We'll find the best spots to put things on display
You can't get this great stuff anymore, I don't know why
But I bet we'll make some young strangers happy when we die

(Repeat Chorus)
