Boy do I have extra time to finish all my some day quilt projects.

I went into work Monday and got laid off. The company was purchased by a foreign company and then down sized the work force. I just don't understand. Where is the improvement our President is talking about?

I look at all my to do list and wonder where do I start. I plan on making some of those tissue holders for sure to hand out at the nursing homes in the goodie baskets my church is making. Thank you for posting the instructions.

i'm so sorry you got laid off, my daughter was laid off for over a year, and things were getting tight,, she finally got a job yesterday, and i'm so relieved, i wish you the best luck, hang in there.

Lacelady 11-09-2010 02:45 PM

Really sorry to hear your news - I hope you get another job soon, and in the meantime, enjoy your extra time for sewing.

117becca 11-09-2010 02:50 PM

{{hugs}} sorry you got laid off.

I hope you can enjoy some of the newly found free time to work on the UFOs - which hopefully shouldn't cost any money if you already have the supplies ;)

Sadiemae 11-09-2010 03:06 PM

Sorry you got laid off, but enjoy finishing some of those unfinished products.

Maride 11-09-2010 03:09 PM

I have been home for9 months desperate for a job. I go through mood swings that will drive anyone crazy. DH is a saint for putting up with this. I have days when I cry all day, the next day sew all day. I am enrolled in school part time so when I am not sewing or having a pity party I study. So far I finished two of my classes with an A and have one more final the day before Thanksgiving. Then I get 6 weeks off before I start school again, this time full time.

Take it one day at a time and don't bottle up your feelings. Let them out. It feels good. Good luck finding another job if that is what you want to do.

BellaBoo 11-09-2010 03:22 PM

I know it's stressful not finding a job. My prayers are with anyone in need of a good job. My kids never understood why we lived so beneath our means when they were growing up. I worked and DH worked but we lived on one pay check. We both made the same salary. One went in the savings for emergency, like car deductibles, medical bills, appliance break downs and so forth. We decided that if the worst happened then we would be okay if one of us had a job. It paid off big time when college years came around. We were able to pay for all our kids college cost, and give them a nice head start after college (they can now take care of themselves and not come back home was our thinking) and I got to retire extra early. It was hard to not buy the new car, new furniture, new house when we could afford it.

Been there, done that. Got laid off at 8am last February 25th. You will survive, & may find a better job. There are some out there.

amma 11-09-2010 03:51 PM

(((HUGS))) I hope that you find another job soon (((HUGS)))
In the mean time, enjoy the extra time at your machine :D:D:D

redquilter 11-09-2010 04:20 PM

I hate hearing this kind of news. Seems every time you turn around a person has been laid off. I'm really sorry for your situation and hope something will come along soon. In the meantime, as the others said, use your time to get things done and that, at least, will make you feel good. It's quite strange - when we work and don't have time for our craft, we wish we did. When we do have time, we wish we didn't! Good luck to you.

dkabasketlady 11-09-2010 05:31 PM

Sorry to hear about the loss of your job(the same thing happened to me and my DH - we both worked at the same place) and while it is devastating there are other jobs out there if you want to work. I got my disability and started my quilting and my DH found another job(which may be done by the end of the year). We even had to relocate to another state, but LIFE goes on. Enjoy your free time to do what you enjoy!! Good Luck!!

littlehud 11-09-2010 06:57 PM

I'm so sorry about your job. Spend some time working on those projects and I hope you find another job soon.

Jingle 11-09-2010 08:33 PM

So sorry you got laid off. I do hope you find another soon.

Boscobd 11-09-2010 08:56 PM

Sorry to hear you were laid off. I hope you find another job soon. In the meantime, catch up on all those things you've been trying to find time to do!

sueisallaboutquilts 11-09-2010 09:38 PM

Everything happens for a reason but it sure is hard to figure it out sometimes.
Take care and enjoy your time off.

2livesdown7togo 11-09-2010 10:37 PM

I'm sorry to hear you were laid off, be extra kind yourself and your family while you find your "next career".

When a door closes, a window opens. What happened to you wasn't about you, and if you were still working, you wouldn't see the next opportunity when it comes up.

Sounds like you already have a plan to use your time well and you have a lot of support from family and all your friends in here.

MerryQuilter 11-10-2010 04:04 AM

Very sorry to hear, surprise this presidents plans were not really to help our country. Prayers your way.

BMP 11-10-2010 04:12 AM

Exact thing happened to me 3 weeks ago. The job I was just at took me nearly 18 months of being off to find. It was perfect and I loved what I was doing the people and the company. I only had been there since Jan and was getting things back on track when it happened again.

niftynickel 11-10-2010 04:16 AM

prayers to you and your job search!!!

The company that I had been with for 10 years closed it doors in March of 2008 and relocated in Mexico. I have been in the TRA/TAA program ever since. I have 5 weeks of school left and I will graduate with a degree in Business Administration, a degree in Management and Supervision, and be 1 class from a degree in Marketing and 1 class from a degree in Accounting. My advise to you if you can afford to live on unemployment, take full advantage of the school, take as many classes as you can and maintain the highest grade point average that you possibly can. This will give you an advantage after graduation when you begin looking for a job.

BMP 11-10-2010 05:54 AM

Good advice for younger people, but if you are 50 something it doesnt work, by the time I would get another education I would be almost at the retirement age.

I am 51 and that is why it is so important to be at the top of my class. I have put a lot of effort into networking with my professors and have already been offered 2 jobs after graduation. Regardless of age, you are never too old for something new, please don't give up just because someone says yu are too old. Retirement age keeps getting older and older!!

EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON. MAKE THE BEST OF THE SITUATION, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT LIES AROUND THE CORNER FOR YOU. BEST OF LUCK, ENJOY THE QUILTING TIME.

Karen, where did you find the instructions? Could you post a link? I'd like to make some for X-mas. Thanks.

How awful for this to happen, especially just before the holidays! Prayer & hugs for/to you on finding another job.

Everyone has given good advice so not much I can add except to try and be good to yourself. If it were me, Heaven forbid, I'd find it very hard to concentrate on anything but my worry about it all. Guess I'd have to ask myself, "is there anything I can do at this moment that will help get a job?" If the answer is, no, not at the moment, then please give yourself permission to be human and enjoy your sewing time!

Good luck!!

Merry Quilter Your statement isn't nice at all. Whatever President is in the office I respect!!!!!!!!! Sorry about your layoff , we've all been there . I was laid off when our former president was in office, but I don'tblame him. As someothers have said, everything happens for a reason. Look to the hill from which cometh your strength.

dforesee 11-10-2010 10:12 AM

I can understand your frustration. The company I worked for was also outsourced and over half of the employees laid off in one feel swoop 6 weeks later. I am still with the company, but I do not feel as if I have any job security. I never know what to expect; just try to take it one day at a time and pray for another day. Sure makes me thankful to "have" a job - no more complaining about too much work. Good luck to you - try www.indeed.com.

georgia 11-10-2010 10:12 AM

And MerryQuilter, I survived Katrina with God's help.

Tcharlie 11-10-2010 10:52 AM

Thank you for all the encouraging messages. The blind sided shock is beginning to wear off. I have a plan and hopefully someone will see my skill level and make me an offer. I have also been looking at all the stuff that is out there that is suppose to help and it is confusing, insurance help, schooling, and how it doesn't apply if you don't do this first and then .....

The Lord is my strength and he doesn't put on me what HE and I can handle.

Thanks for the prayers, keep them coming. I know it was not a personal decision because others got laid off also, but it still stings.

Bonnie, don't look at it that way. When I was laid off, 600 other people were too. We were also covered under TAA and they pay for our education towards a new career. Is not as easy as it sounds, but it works well for many. I think this is where I am headed. Many people have already gone back to school, many into nursing. The sad part was that the class that started in August was only people laid off from my job. No high school graduate was accepted to make room for the people laid off. I think it was unfair to the young girls who had to go away from home for a nursing program when there was one there, just not available to them. The sadder part is that many people has dropped out because they were not in school for a real long time and could not adjust.

There is no age limit to start again a new career. I am studying to be a Funeral Director within the next 18 months. I never saw myself doing this, but I guess this is my future. Good luck to you.

Maria

laurac 11-10-2010 05:01 PM

maria,
what are you going to school to "be"? if you have the apptitude for nursing, its a field that is almost always hiring. takes some tough training but is very rewarding.

i hope you enjoy quilting while you work through the job drought.

Maride 11-11-2010 07:45 PM

I am studying to be a Funeral director. I don't think I can make as a nurse. Maybe when I was younger, but not now. The option to stay in Plattsburgh would have worked as a nursing student, but even the local hospital is cutting down. Many people went to school to be able to stay in Plattsburgh, but it looks like not even that is a possibility.
