Fabric.com - Make It Stop!

Waiting for me in my in-box this morning was an email from fabric.com advertising hundreds of fabrics for $4.95 a yard. I need more fabric like I need a hole in the head. $120 later (includes shipping to Canada), I bought 18.5 yards. Which for Canada, works out to $6.20 a yard and that's an excellent price. I justified it by deciding that I needed some colourful pink quilt backs for some baby girl quilts that I am making. I added some backing for baby boys, backing for a kit that I have coming in the mail, and a black and white stripe that I want to use for binding some baby quilts.

I've never subjected myself to a fabric morotorium, but I see that many people adhere to the "only buy more fabric if I need it for a specific project" rule. Since I know where all these are going, it's allowed, right? Because the armoir where I keep my stash is jammed and I have no place to store this new yardage that's on its way...I just want someone to tell me it's OK. :)

Jan in VA 03-05-2013 07:54 AM

You bought more fabric?? SHAME ON YOU!!

For even asking us if it's okay...... That's like asking a fish if it's okay to bite that worm, of course it is, LOL! Ridiculous!!:D

It is OK. You can buy anything that makes you happy. Have fun.

MaryMo 03-05-2013 08:03 AM

I concur that you are doing the right thing at buying more fabric! I justify it because it's my thing ... I don't smoke, drink excessively, participate in wild parties, buy lots of shoes, etc. Besides the fabric was on sale and will be more expensive tomorrow ... right? !! ;)

Emma S 03-05-2013 08:11 AM

Kate: If your looking for approval this is the place. Most of us can identify. I saw that ad from Fabric.com and quickly deleted it. I have a walk in closet that is full of fabric. If I live to be three hundred years old I won't make a dent. If you only have one piece of furniture full of fabric you clearly need more.

DebraK 03-05-2013 08:19 AM

yep, they got me too. I bought 30 yards ;-/

quiltstringz 03-05-2013 08:19 AM

You have a purpose for it - so it is a valid purchase. Of course that hasn't stopped me in the past.

Charming 03-05-2013 08:23 AM

Wow Mary Jo...that just hit me so true. I don't go much out of the house....hate shopping (except for fabric :D) and don't party or....hmmmm gosh i don't do much besides quilting...lol
Yes my dear go treat yourself to whatever your heart desires. I know i have one life to live and i try to give and help others as much as possible and as much as i love buying fabric so i am happy...:-)

I got the same email am going to really take a look at all the fabric!!!! I do not need to buy fabric but you never can tell I just might. Of course it is OK!!!! That is what I do QUILT!!! Congrats on your purchase!!!! Enjoy!!!!

kateyb 03-05-2013 09:00 AM

I've been trying not to buy more fabric but...... I've been looking for a fabric to finish a quilt that would go with one I started that I didn't buy enough of the background and need to get something that will, at least, go with. Searching on line for something this morning I didn't find anything that I thought would have the right effect. However, I did find 3 other fabrics that inspired me. Since I am trying to keep my quilting confined to one room and have been trying to lower my stash to keep within that space. However, I'm seriously considering them anyway. So.... the debate begins with my conscience. By the way, I just ordered 30 yards of batting at a good price. I have 4 queen size tops finished needing to be quilted. I also have 6 baby quilts to do for grand nieces and nephews.

Sewnoma 03-05-2013 09:03 AM

This is why I'm glad that I LOVE scrappy quilts...I will go on Fabric.com and buy just a half-yard of all the lovely fabrics I can't live without. It's still hard to get away from that site without spending at least a hundred bucks though. They just have SO MUCH COOL STUFF! LOL

So, to pass this temptation around you just had to post on here about their good prices? Just joking!
((((((((((((((((Kate))))))))))))))

I threw my Hancock's catalog away. And I need to throw the Connecting Threads away too!

WTG, MaryMo! Just my kind of woman! I buy shoes quite often, but at thrift shops and spray them with Lysol,

mcook03 03-05-2013 09:36 AM

I like to look at stocking up on fabric, like those folks who stock up on food and water for the "just in case". My husband and I are federal employees, because of sequetration, our hours at work are going to be cut 20% beginning (each) at the end April and last for at least five months. DH wanted me to stock up on T.P. and hamburger~but alas I have quietly been stocking up on fabric!!!!!!! Shhhhh ...don't tell....we may have to use the scraps as TP!!!!

Boston1954 03-05-2013 10:57 AM

--...I just want someone to tell me it's OK. --

IT'S OKAY!!! I will never tell someone they cannot buy fabric. You deserve it. As soon as the tax money gets here, I am treating myself, because I deserve it too. :-)

Canada Kate 03-05-2013 12:13 PM

Oh my dear ladies, thank you for your support!!! I do have other vices besides fabric (food, shelter and keeping my two kids in university to name 3) but I love getting that package in the mail containing new creative possibilities. THANKS for telling me it's OK! I feel much better now. :o

nannyrick 03-05-2013 12:18 PM

Hmmmmmm, I'd better check this out, LOL. Thanks for the information.

maminstl 03-05-2013 12:43 PM

I get the email, go to the site, add a bunch of stuff to a design wall, consider all my choices, then empty the wall and go on about my day. Of course if I'm in the mood to spend money - then into the cart it goes. I'm the same way in a retail store. Will walk around clutching some prize for an hour, then put it back and leave the store. Sometimes I just can't pry open my wallet (then again, once open all my money fights to get out) Completely unpredictable.

GagaSmith 03-05-2013 04:23 PM

I, too, got the email and couldn't resist the tempation, even tho I really don't need any fabric. I only spent about $85. My DH and I went out to dinner at Outback Sunday and we spent $45 on two dinners. I just figure I won't go out to dinner a couple of times and it will pay for the fabric I bought. That's my justification and I'm sticking to it.

Mundy 03-05-2013 04:28 PM

myself you made me smile guilty here

sewplease 03-05-2013 05:37 PM

I spent some enjoyable time putting about $100 in my shopping cart, but there it sits - no extra money right now, but it was fun picking it out. Kind of like window shopping. :-)

rufree4t 03-05-2013 05:49 PM

To find fabric at a good price for project you have in mind it makes great sense to make the purchase. Just think what it would have cost you if you bought them one at a time at top price.

SmickChick 03-05-2013 06:46 PM

They got me for 85 (dollars, not yards! ...I wish!) The fabrics are very nice for that price. I figure it's okay to build a stash of fabs you like. Then when a project surfaces, you have fabrics you really like, not just one's that work. Am I bad???

vintagetouch 03-05-2013 07:33 PM

Well considering when I was back in Canada last year and had to buy fabric for the back of the quilt I made for my niece at $18 a meter, I say if you can get fabric at that price go for it!

Pattia 03-05-2013 07:47 PM

considering you are in Canada, the price of fabric at a quilt store or even Lens Mills is at least 12$ yard. So you did good.
don't forget to show us your quilt finishes.
=)

Jan in VA, you are one SHARP lady!!! Always love your witty answers!!!! Keep 'em coming! :)

bunniequilter 03-06-2013 04:30 AM

As a fellow Canadian, I understand how you couldnt resist the price, going to spend some time in their site myself.

Amythyst02 03-06-2013 04:31 AM

we are such enablers!!!

QltrSue 03-06-2013 04:45 AM

I've always told my "eyebrow-raisers" that my quilting and sewing activities are cheaper than a psychiatrist and healthier than a bar! And I look on my fabric collection as ingredients in my pantry: cant produce much if the cupboard is bare. So it's okay!!!

Georgette 03-06-2013 04:52 AM

Don't beat yourself up so much. You DID SAVE MONEY, and today that is major important. Besides, you bought it for a good cause, to finish quilt projects that you previously bought fabric for. Take a deep breath and think about all the money you saved. Georgette

Martha - First, I'm sorry our government has brought you, and so many others, to this point. I'm sure we've all got opinions, so won't go any further on the sequester!

Love your avatar quilt, such pretty colors. Makes me think of spring, which is seeming a long way off. The snow on the ground does make a nice backdrop for quilt pics, though!

Lastly - and the subject of this thread - let me help you justify your purchases by saying that if you are going to have to take unpaid time off, you'll have some lovely fabrics to work with while you are home.

Ha! fabric is my vice of choice although DH has asked if I could try to find a FHA group ( fabric Horders Anonomous)

peaceandjoy 03-06-2013 05:35 AM

Kate, you've come to the right place for support in your purchases - especially because you already have projects in mind for them! And, as pointed out, the normal cost of fabric in Canada is so much higher than what you paid.

Fabric.com is one that can get me, but lately it's been Whittles when they add their weekly new lines. Sometimes Missouri Star's daily deal - but never when it's a charm pack! And last week one of the local Menonite stores had their annual sale, 15% off their already lower than usual prices. Oh dear, guess I'd better not open that e-mail from fabric.com...

sewbizgirl 03-06-2013 05:36 AM

It's always a good idea to buy fabric when you find good deals! Always, always, always!!

Jan in VA is absolutely right. Enjoy your fabric Canada Kate.

Lorileik 03-06-2013 05:57 AM

I read a quote that made me laugh. "She who dies with the most fabric, wins!"

Noiseynana 03-06-2013 06:17 AM

Kate, I found the same thing and woe is me, I bought more too. But,I only spent $50.00 . I was only gonna look then I saw "IT". Fell in the same hole you did.ONly I"m in Arkansas.

Sew real hard and use up some you already have, that's what I plan to do cause I am expecting a nice "surprise" from Fabric.com too (and Connecting Threads, and Joann's, and who knows where else).

craftycancer 03-06-2013 07:24 AM

It is ok! Think of it this way it is better to have it when you need it; then to need it and not have it! Some days when it is raining; I would love to start a quiilt project, but I never seem to have the fabric I need. Can not stand driving in the rain! If only I had a abundance of fabric! So trust me it is ok!

BettyGee 03-06-2013 08:45 AM

Oh I know what you mean and can be of no solace to you. A well meaning friend told me "...you can never have too much fabric." My DH would strongly disagree, but I'm still trying to get him to understand the word "stash." When I started quilting I bought fabric like it was never going to be available ever again and I had to build my stash. Now when I see something I can picture in a project I buy three yards and put it away. I have too much fabric, if there is such a thing, but I can think of something to do with each and every inch of it. So this reply was of little comfort, but know that you are in very good company.
