When you purchase 2-3 yards of the same fabric, do you cut it down into 1 yard pieces or in half so it is more manageable to cut? Or does this cause more scrap?
I don't cut mine into smaller pieces though when I was trying to iron 10 yards a couple of months ago, I was wishing I had!!!!
I usually just fold it or roll it up and only cut what I need. I would be sick if I cut it in half and then came up just a few inches short on a piece!

I don't because knowing me ... I'd cut it too short  If I were going to cut it down, I'd be sure to cut any binding and sashing first.

I don't cut any of my fabric until I need it. My luck falls into Murphy's Law. :)
i don't cut down any fabric or even wash any fabric until i am going to use it.
I wash & put away, don't cut until needed.
All is washed as soon as it comes into my home. Then it's ready to go when I want to sew.
No cutting, til I know what it's for ...... otherwise, would have two pieces, two small! |
No!! Do not cut until you know for sure what you are doing with it!!!
I don't cut it either.
I never cut a multi-yard piece into smaller pieces. I make a lot of large quilts, and I like to have large pieces to cut borders from so I don't have seams.
I agree with everyne here. Wash and put away until I am ready to use it. That being said, if I have say four yards of something that i am wanting to use on a project that requires a half a yard, I'll go ahead and cut that half a yard off to make it more managable when cutting strips.

Nope, I am a non cutter too.
I starch, press flat, fold selvage to selvage press the fold in then fold raw edge to raw edge, then I am cutting four layers of fabric and I cut two WOF strips at a time! Cuts down on time spent cutting AND I am not dealing with a bunch of bulk hanging off the cutting mat! |

When I am cutting it, I have it folded like it is on it's cardboard so it is not taking up much space on my cutting board.
I alway straighten the ends or cut them straight and put it away in one large piece. I know if I cut it I will need more when I decide to use it.
Murphy is a friend of mine too. I cut as I need.
Cut only as needed here too :D:D:D
Depends on what i need it for. I have 6 yards right now, that I want to use for backing, and need it for blocks for the top. Rather than mess with the whole 6 yards cutting 3.5" strips I cut off a yard, made my strips. Otherwise I don't do it. I cut as needed.
I seldom buy more than 1 yard pieces. But when I do I don't cut them up because I may need this length for borders
or backings for crib/lap quilts. |

When I purchase fabric, I fold it lenght wise and hang on a hanger. Then when I need to cut I have a hook for my hanger and cut what I need, then hang in back in the closet. So I guess I cut what I need when I need it... Sometimes I get long winded.
I don't usually cut mine. Always afraid I might need the big piece for something.

Ditto for me I wash and keep it in one piece.
I don't cut until I know exactly what I need. I am too new a quilter to risk not having enough fabric for a project. I use sewing weights to help hold the fabric on my cutting mat. They seem to help a lot.
I leave it in one piece. You never know how you are going to use that piece so you don't want to fall short on length.
i cut all my borders and sashes lengthwise to avoid stretching, so i never cut until i know what length i need.

I don't cut any until I use it. It's always my luck that I'll come up short by an inch or two.. or 6. Been there, done that.

Agree with most wash and put away til you are ready to use it.
A multi-yard length of fabric that I absolutely love is a beautiful sight! I will cut into it when I need to.
I don't cut it until I've read the cutting instructions on a pattern ... twice.
Buy it, wash it, iron and fold it and notdo not cut till ready for a project. So happy to se so many are washing before cutting, it is just a little thing but a saver on the potary cutter's too the sizing dulls the blades faster.
Happy quilting to all |
Yup, agree to all of the above. The LQS that I work at doesn't recomend pre-washing, but I am a die-hard. There was a disgruntled customer that brought in a quilt that had put Osnaburg as the filler or quilt batt. But when she bought it I said she should buy .1 m extra for every metre she bought, to allow for shrinkage, and to pre wash. Well , she didn't, and guess what. Her quilt batt shrunk, and her flannel didn't. The store replaced all of her fabric. I thought, you silly girl, why didn't you just pre-wash like I said????? From Auntie B in, suddenly it is spring in Saskatchewan.
