Does anyone want to join me on a fabric moratorium.

What I'm thinking about is this...

* no fabric purchases to start a new quilt top
* from now until 1 November 2011

What you can buy is this - items to finish an existing quilt project (either WIP or UFO):

* batting
* backing or binding fabric
* fabric (if nothing in your stash will work)
* thread or notions

Anyone else interested in joining me?

amandasgramma 11-30-2010 02:02 PM

I would but I don't think I can handle the withdrawels!!!! :shock: :shock:

And I tried not buying fabric, wanted to get rid of my stash....after one year and 4 quilts, I have MORE stash than before!!! :mrgreen:

amma 11-30-2010 02:02 PM

:shock: I don't think that I can do this :oops: :lol:

Rachel 11-30-2010 02:03 PM

does that mean if I find something I have to have, but don't have a quilt in mind, I can still buy it?

Candace 11-30-2010 02:04 PM

Nope, not interested! I enjoy buying!

Grama Lehr 11-30-2010 02:07 PM

Sorry! Don't let my husband see this................he would sign me up in a heart beat!!! :shock: :shock: :shock:

KiwiQuilter 11-30-2010 02:08 PM

Rachel - that would be a "no". The reason is that you wouldn't have the project already in your "to-do" basket.

I know - pretty tough huh.

A friend of mine started this last year. To start with I thought she was quite insane. The more I thought about it - the more it made sense. I gave it a go - and it is really achievable.

The point of the 1 November deadline - is that during November there are some really good sales. That's when I would stock up.

littlehud 11-30-2010 02:08 PM

I would love to but know I don't have the willpower to do it. I'll be in buying something to complete a quilt and a new fabric will shout my name and I'll buy it. Sigh.

quiltinghere 11-30-2010 02:12 PM

I'm in!!! does it start NOW? What do we do 'confess' when we bought something we shouldn't have bought?

The hardest place not to buy though will be right on this website's classifieds. I HAVE to check them everyday...even though I don't 'need' anything.

Jeanniejo 11-30-2010 02:12 PM

Not me !!!! It's one of the few things I truly enjoy !!!

great aunt jacqui 11-30-2010 02:17 PM

I was thinking of doing this too, so i will join you. I am
stuffed with fabric and kits and patterns. even if gorgeous fabric tempt me I will pass it by until november.

I bought myself mucho mucho things for christmas. so kiwi quilter i will really try to do this. anyone else.?

dogsgod 11-30-2010 02:19 PM

I love to buy also, but shouldn't so I'm gonna say I'm in! May need lots of encouragement throughout the year however!

Eddie 11-30-2010 02:19 PM

I can't do it because I'm having withdrawals just thinking about doing it. Yes, I need an intervention! HAHAHA. I will NOT be stopped!!!!!!!

And why would we want to? Oh, that's right. There is a reason why people are called Masochists. Or Sadists. Or both. :shock: :lol: :lol: :lol:

Rebecca VLQ 11-30-2010 02:23 PM

Funny you should mention this. I'm doing a crafting supply moratorium from December 1, 2010 to November 30, 2011. I posted a topic on this and everyone had something to say (some, a LOT to say!)

I'm good for batting, backing, thread, fabric. Really. I've allowed myself things like needles, and I suppose if I run out of thread that would be a must, but I don't think I will!

Feel free to follow my blog:

(I wasn't going to say anything, but since you started it... :lol: )

sueisallaboutquilts 11-30-2010 02:25 PM

Oh Kiwi, that's a really TALL order! I think you're going to be lonely on this one. Count me OUT lol

nwm50 11-30-2010 02:25 PM

Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha....rothlmbo ! Sorry..impossible! But would love to try!!

KiwiQuilter 11-30-2010 02:25 PM

When you start is up to you. I would recommend choosing a date before 1 January 2011.

I'm starting now because I've had a wee blast at the sales.

While my stash doesn't even remotely compare to others, when I think about what I have - really I've probably got enough to keep me going for 2 or 3 years.

I've got;
* several WIPs (4 that I can think of already - but I know there's more),
* BOMs (not started),
* Ryan McKenna kits (not started), and
* the stash.

I want to get my spending under control - and this is a "fun" (yes it really can be fun) way to do it.

Confessions - why not. Tomorrow will always be other day, and another chance to get back on track.

quiltinghere 11-30-2010 02:29 PM

Pictures of finished projects will help too.

featherweight 11-30-2010 02:30 PM

Not me, I don't ever want to not buy fabric when I see something I like. That is what quilting is all about!!!

Yarn or Fabric 11-30-2010 02:32 PM

I am actually going to be downsizing and promised myself to not buy much next year. I really need to get a handle on the fabric overage I have going on - massive fabric overage to say the least. I might actually also do a machine downsizing too. I haven't gotten brave enough to try my quilting frame, 15" machine and robotic quilting carriage so I might be downsizing that as well.. we will see.... I am still trying to muster the strength to figure out how to use that darn thing.

But for the fabric downsizing... I am seriously considering it. I might actually need to buy blender materials since I own mostly prints...

KiwiQuilter 11-30-2010 02:34 PM

Rebecca found your thread. Just reading it now.

I know it's a bit of a catch 22.

Shopping does keep the industry going (including the postal service).

Not shopping, for personal reasons, can have its own rewards depending on what the reasons are.

klgreene 11-30-2010 02:38 PM

That was going to be my New Years resolution. I have purchased so much fabric in the last two months, all good prices, companies closing, great sales, Black Friday, Cyber Monday. I have 4 orders that still need to come in. So I'm with you, just need to use all the beautiful fabric I have. The only acception is if someone wanted me to make something special for them. But I don't think that will happen. I'm going to try to make miniatures, so that means, I have fabric for the rest of my life right not.

MistyMarie 11-30-2010 02:43 PM

I think I need to do this. I just have way too much fabric. I know, I know... someone is going to say that one can never have too much fabric. Well, I do. I also have too many UFOs. So, I will definitely join in on this.

KiwiQuilter 11-30-2010 02:52 PM

For those that are interested but want to tweak the "rules/guidelines" for themselves that's okay.

If you can only do 1, 2 or 3 months - that's fine.

If you want to commit, but still have the ability to buy on sales. Then determine what is a really good sale, and add that to your "rules/guidelines" list. A good sale for someone, might be 50% off, and another person might be anything less than $5 a yard.

Great to see the interest (on both sides).

jrhboxers 11-30-2010 03:02 PM

I would but I have some lovely fabrics coming in in April from the Bouquet Gallery "Prettist Florals of 2011" on pre-order. Now if that doesn't count, then maybe.

KiwiQuilter 11-30-2010 03:05 PM

Good news - pre-orders don't count :)

I put in for a pre-order in early November, it won't get here until February.

Jane - love your boxer by the way. My 2 dogs are both rescue dogs too (not boxers though).

Nope, sorry I am already on a spending diet. I know that I would never be able to last that long. I am already having problems with the spending diet. And I know that as soon as I see some really cool fabric I will have to buy it. Good Luck though :roll: :lol: :thumbup:

mcdaniel023 11-30-2010 03:06 PM

My husband would volunteer me in a second. But,I doubt if I could if I wanted to.

I have numerous ufo's to quilt, and that is something I'm new at, so should really take my time. And besides, I really should do some house work every once-in-a-while. Oh no did I say that.

quiltsRfun 11-30-2010 03:24 PM

I'll give it a try but I don't know if I can make it for a whole year. I'm having enough trouble staying away from the Connecting Threads sampler sale!

sewingladydi 11-30-2010 03:25 PM

I'm trying to do that now. But putting a date on it that far away is too scary! I really do need to limit my new fabric though. Absolutely no place to put it!

0tis 11-30-2010 03:25 PM

that is worse than quitting smoking...I don't think I could do it.

2livesdown7togo 11-30-2010 03:26 PM

I'm in. Nearly got through October without anything new, November was scaled way back too. Was thinking about going to Hancock's (50% off everything I want on Thursday), but might not go.

I've got WIP's and planned projects to keep me at my machine for a good long time. At some point some of the lovely fabric I have will be out of fashion, so I want to get caught up.

bjchad 11-30-2010 03:31 PM

I don't think I could do a complete moratorium but I might be able to do a 3 for 1 deal. That is, for every three pieces of fabric stash I use up I get to buy 1 new piece. Use 3 FQs. Get to buy 1. Use 3 yards of stash fabric get to buy 1yard new fabric. I think I might be able to make it 6 months starting now with the exception of Xmas prints to do my stockings I am giving for presents.

So count me in to the stash busters club on the 3 for 1 plan.

Cyn 11-30-2010 03:32 PM

Sorry, I lost already ;)

leatheflea 11-30-2010 03:36 PM

Not possible, so why even try. Theres fabric out there waiting for me. Like a puppy waiting to be picked.

bj 11-30-2010 03:39 PM

How about if I give up exercise...Oh wait, I don't do that. I could give up tv...Hmmm don't do that too much either. I guess I could try, as long as we can buy batting and thread, I've got enough to go for awhile. Of course, those poor little QFK kids will be disappointed. Just kidding. I won't stop sewing for the little guys and any new babies that come in before deadline. :D :D :D Are we supposed to show what we've done from our stash? Maybe SOME of us should show pictures of our stashes before and after.
