fabric from other countries

Hello... I am concerned that I may have made a mistake (shocking I know :) ) I do purchase most of fabric on line. Most of the stores I purchase from I have heard about from you guys and gals here on the board.

I do purchase from Amazon because they seem to ship quick and the prices are often the same or better.

Well I learned something that I have to watch for at Amazon - - the seller. This last one that I picked is from Thailand. I have nothing against purchasing overseas.. I just don't know what quality the fabric will be.

Has anyone here purchased from Notions Potions? Or fabric from Thialand? I am just concerned about shrinking. These are jelly roll type strips and I don't prewash precut fabric....ugh. I will pay more attention going forward.

I did try to cancel, but they shipped anyway. Maybe they didn't get my message???

Sorry, I am not a big fan of Amazon. Even being a prime member, I can find items cheaper at US quilt shops with reasonable shipping charges. I prefer RK fabric since they are produced in Japan. Remember, many fabric are made in China so you may not find a difference in quality after all. Please keep us posted when the fabric arrives.

Geri B 04-03-2016 05:28 AM

Isnt it true that most fabrice comes from overseas somewhere...so whats the difference......let us know how this works for you.....

btw...curiosity made me check out the fab....no longer available....must have been a good seller

I was thinking the same thing.. but I don't know who the manufacturer is.

I agree... you do have to watch. But I have had some good luck. Like recently there was a line of fabric that MSQC had but they didn't have the jelly roll. Amazon had the line in a jelly roll - which was nice since I am wanting to make a jelly roll race quilt (have never made one before)

When I want to check for shrinking but not launder in the machine I take a measured piece (like 2x2) swish it in a bowl of hot soapy water then rinse the soap, and iron dry, then take the measurement again and check for shrinking. (at the same time you can check for colorfastness especially if you use a white bowl) Sorry I don't know about Thailand fabric specifically.

QuiltnNan 04-03-2016 06:58 AM

at your link to the seller, they only have a 45% rating... that's not good enough for me to do business with them... i always look for 90% or higher.

I saw that too. I wondered why one would want to deal with anything shipping overseas when it is available on our shores.

our quilting fabric is predominately produced in Japan, China and Korea. There are some (solids) Made in the USA and are marketed as such.

I do the same, I won't buy from a seller on Amazon or Ebay with a rating below 90%. I also look at their negative feedback.

willferg 04-03-2016 08:19 AM

Well, the store only has 11 ratings, and while less than a third of them are negative, there are some glowing five-star reviews as well.

The fabric is cute, so it will be interesting to see how it is when you get it.

meyert 04-03-2016 08:25 AM

Yes I agree, what can I say I was lost in a fabric shopping daze :) I usually click so I only see items that are Prime eligible, I forgot to do that as well.

I am at the point that I purchased in a way that I usually don't - I made a boo boo. Now I am trying to recover from my fears of this mistake

There were only 10 or 11 reviews. With those low numbers its really hard to rely on them. With some of them saying slow - well that is to be expected from overseas.

thanks for your input. I guess I just have to be patient and hope for the best

I personally hate buying fabric online, the source isn't so much my problem. It is that I am a fabric molester. I like to see the actual colors (not what the computer thinks it might be) I like to touch, feel, and caress the fabric, but I think my fabric world is shrinking and I may be forced to do more online purchases. : (

Gerrycnx 04-03-2016 10:31 AM

Well...I am currently living in Thailand, but I cannot help. There is such a variety of quality in the fabric market that you can find the finest cotton or really cheap and low level one. Of course usually the price is very different. And when I buy fabric on the market at least I can touch it. There is not so many place (in my city) that offer pre-cut, so I guess this shop is in Bangkok. The price seems quite high compared to what I usually see here when I buy at meter (probably because of the pre-cut and maybe because it is intended for a foreigner market ...import cost, tax etc). But it is quite reasonable compared to the pre-cut that I saw here ( funny to say...but in the proper quilt shops the fabric that I see is imported from USA and cost usually around 600/700 thb at feet - 17/20 dollars and there are very few pre-cut, but, again, maybe in Bangkok is different)

...anyway...please let us know how it is the quality of the fabric. If it is good maybe I can try it out :-P

After a quick search...yes it is in Bangkok On etsy goes under the name Terracottahome and I found way more review on Etsy.
https://www.etsy.com/shop/Terracottahome/reviews?ref=l2

The review looks good here. I am not familiar with Etsy so I don't know how reliable they are .

givio 04-03-2016 10:54 AM

I bought fabric on Ebay from China. It was described as good quality 100% quilting cotton, but it was not what I expected. It was not a see-through muslin type cotton. It was tightly woven, but the threads were very fine, resulting in a lightweight cotton that had a beautiful drape. I think it would have been nice for making a blouse, however, I had chosen the color and print for a quilting project... I didn't want to mix it with with US type quilt store fabrics. I think it would not wear in the same manner alongside them. I bought 4 yards and decided to use it for a back. I suggest if the seller and quality is unknown to buy a small amount as a trial first to understand what their description really means.

Thank you!! that does make me feel a little better. I will have to just wait and see...says it will be a few weeks before I will receive my shipment

Pennyhal 04-03-2016 11:54 AM

I regret that the fabric mfgs are all over seas. I can't do anything about that, but I can buy fabric from stores in the USA. Nowadays, I really look out for exactly where the product I want is shipping from. Please let us know how the fabric does.

You are welcome! It looks they are on the market since 2009...it should be a good sign. May be they are only new on Amazon. :-)
Anyway...let's see .I put them in my list to try.

maryfrang 04-04-2016 12:55 PM

I had a foreign exchange student from Thailand and she has sent me a box of fabric from there. I did not have any trouble with the fabric but some of it is silk. There also was cotton that was not too thin or the color did not run. Good luck I hope you get similar fabric that I received from my student.

I have experience with fabric from China and from Thailand because I lived in Asia for many years. I'm not wild for the Chinese fabric, it is usually quite thin. But I love the Thai fabric! Actually, my favourite source for fabric is the fabric market in Chiang Mai! They sell good quality cotton for very nice prices (around USD 2-3/m). The cotton is a little bit thiner than American quilting fabric, but it still works very well for quilting.

donnalbaldwin 04-04-2016 01:52 PM

When I purchase fabric on line, I buy only brand names, such as Moda

Hi Monale!! It is exactly the city where I live in!! I usually go to buy fabric at Warorot Market. Do you still purchase it on line? If you have the contact of some reliable fabric seller, pls share (even online...) :-) I bought a lot of nice fabric but I also had a couple of bad surprises with fabric that lost color ruining my almost ready first babyquilt...

In China, I did buy fabric online (on Taobao - the Chinese only part of Aliexpress). However, in Thailand I have never bought any fabric online but just in person in Warorot Market. Just LOVE that market! Picture heaps of fabric rolls where you have to dig to find treasures :) My best treasure there was an original Jinny Beyer border print (the last 3m and therefore heavily discounted) for THB 100/m (that's about USD 3 if I'm not mistaken). But I also love the Thai fabric which usually is about USD 2. There are so many colours and different prints! A while ago, I found some with leaves that almost looked like batiks. Whenever I go there, I need to give myself a limit beforehand on how much I can allow myself to buy (e.g. "no more than 7m today!"). It's fabric paradise for someone on a budget! :p

I ALWAYS prewash my fabrics and so far had no such unpleasant surprises with any fabric I bought in Thailand. I have to say that the only fabric I ever had problems with running colours was a "real" quilting fabric (a batik). I had to wash it two or three times until I was sure it would not run anymore.

quilterpurpledog 04-05-2016 03:05 AM

I know that much of our fabric is made in Japan, Korea and Indonesia (batiks). I only buy brands I am familiar with. I wish they were made in the USA. I avoid fabric from China, India and Pakistan. I made an error recently and got some fabric from China (from Amazon) and it is just junk. I don't generally buy fabric on Amazon; but in this case I had no choice. I had run out of a certain fabric, googled it, and, the only place it was available was Amazon. So, I bought it (it was a Timeless Treasures product). Then, I looked at the section (also bought) and did not look carefully-it was cute in the picture. I plan to wash it in hot water and dry it in the dryer and use it for binding. I think it will be OK for that because I will cut it on the bias. Lesson learned.

eBay has fat quarters at a good price, but I have hesitated about ordering as they are from China; anyone have experience with this? I am concerned about the quality

mom-6 04-05-2016 10:21 AM

When my hubby was stationed in Thailand he brought back some gorgeous Thai silk fabric. Would love to have more.
Granted that was eons ago and was purchased in a local market there long before eBay or Amazon were even thought of.

Why worry about your order until you see it? You may be very pleasantly surprised.

Gerrycnx 04-30-2016 02:14 AM

Any news about the fabric? Did you receive it? Was it good? :)
