Me too, Dottie, I will use all my tiny scraps. Hard to pay over $11.00 a yard even if I LOVE the fabric!
|
I have such an addiction to buying fabic, guess I've just found a cure for it, THE PRICE !!!!!!
|
I've been noticing that our Wal-Mart fabric prices have jumped considerably over the past few months. What used to be about $2.50/yard fabric has doubled plus in price now for the identical fabric!!! Hard to find a Wal-Mart fabric deal now.
|
I think that just means more sales & discounts down the road, cause how many of us can really afford those prices. I mainly buy fqs, but it's still sad to see even fabric going up more. I use to sew for DH & I, alot, but mainly quilt now, as it's cheaper to buy readmade clothes, & that's sad too!..

Does anyone else have an amish fabric store by them? Ours is about 13 miles away, carries Thimbleberries, Moda etc at 3.99 to 4.99 a yard. However these are the older collections, but beautiful all the same.
Tulip |
wow glad I planned ahead haha
|
Our LQS quit ordering one line of fabric bc she couldn't afford it. Glad I have a very large stash. Batting may be another problem. Guess I need to stock up on batting.
|
How lucky are you, in Australia the same fabric you pay $12.00 for we have to pay $28.00 to $30.00 for, hence the fabric traffic between the US and Australia is really busy, I am on first name terms with all of the postmen as I buy all fabric for our little craft group from the US, my neighbours must wonder what all the strange parcels are I keep getting delivered, hope the drug squad does not do a raid, I"ll just show them my quilts if they do.
If the order is no more than nine yards in total the postage is very reasonable. Regards Carol |
I love Connecting Threads fabrics. They're just beautiful to work with, and the prices always seem reasonable.
I try to shop on sale as much as possible, and whenever I go into any store I ask for a Teacher and/or Military discount, since my mom is a Coastie and I'm in the Auxiliary. Most places are accommodating for Teachers and service people. |
There is a world wide shortage of cotton due to droughts in China and floods in Pakistan. Good reason to buy cotton fabrics and clothing quickly before prices get worse, but I think I will try my hand at scrap quilts as I'm trying to become a minimalist and use up my stash.

is another good fabric website. |
Just come our way...Moda fabrics might be $10 when they are on sale...usually $21 - $34.
|
Shop Goodwill and other resale, can get shirts, blouses etc for patchwork quilts.
|
I am finding a lot of my fabrics at Estate Sales or after the death of a quilter. In the past year, I've found numerous pieces of 3 yds or more for less than $5.00. Since I'm a scrap quilt junkie it works just fine for me, then I can splurge on the fabrics I really want.
I've ordered quite a lot from eQuilter and have always been pleased with the quality and order. |
Sales & coupons is my rule to buy fabric !!

My stash will have to last. People higher then us are always taking our only enjoyments from us. Guess they won't rest til they have it all.
|
I have "heard" that cotton fabric will be "going up" - I guess this means that I will actually have to USE my stash!!!!!!
|
I forgot about batting...better get a few of those too!
|
yes prices are going up fast,so for all feature buys will be on sale or with coupons only.
|
Same here, forgot about batting. Problem is space to store it.

Just received an email from one of the local shops advertising a new line by Moda and the price is $11.49 a yard. This is the first time I have seen a price at $10 or more.:) Sure cuts into being able to purchase for the stash. won't be happening:) |

Time to start doing more fabric shopping at Goodwill and yard sales. Large men's shirts, skirts and dresses cut apart yield a great deal of reusable fabric for very little cost.

How much to make a quilt? it adds up, pattern, fabric, batting thread,oh, I forgot labor. Its the greatest hobby and so rewarding but you can't sell them. Enjoy
|
The fabric we buy online is exactly the SAME as you buy in craft shops. I go to craft shows note the fabric by maker Moda, Kaufman etc, most fabrics have a design name, the maker is usually printed along the selvage, I agree I like to test the "feel" of the fabric so I examine the fabric carefully make a note then go home and switch on the "On" button of my computer and order from the many online shops in the US.
Some of my favourites are Fabric Shack, Fabric Depot,<Fabricworm and Quilt Kits Online. Connecting threads have beautifull fabrics but do not ship internationally. I always go for quality as so many hours are put into making a quilt and I always want them to look good for as many years as possible after constant laundering. |
Not all JoAnn's fabrics are $9.99. When I was making aprons for a church bazaar, I found quite a few from $3.99 to $6.99. Most of them were good fabrics. One peachy print at the $4.99 price point didn't wash as well as I would have liked, but it was being used where the fabric was double and the color was wonderful, so it was fine. At 30% off, these were good prices for mission work and still be able to turn out a quality product.
I am sewing on Moda now and I do like it. |
I needed another print to go with fabric I already had, so I went to my local quilt shop and found the perfect match - at $15.95 a yard! Needless to say, I got something else.

Are these higher prices for fabric made in the USA? or offshore? I won't buy anything fabric made in China etc. We've got to stop supporting them. Buy American made at a discount, use coupons, anything to save $$. The small quilt shops have a hard enough time as it is making a profit, it will put a lot of them out of business. I hope we don't have to start buying everything online, the shipping will be high too. |
Hi,
I'd love to know about this fabric shop. I am originally from Maine and love to find new shops to check out! Thanks, lots2do |
Same here in Ireland. We pay the equivalent of $16-$20 per metre and as for threads and notions, DON'T GET ME STARTED. They are a total rip off over here, when you can get them. I have been buying online from the U.S. since I started quilting about a year ago and even with shipping I only pay less than half what I would pay at home
|
eQuilter.com has lots of fabric on sale for less then $4 a yard. Their shipping prices don't put the cost up there either.
|
My LQS has gone up to $10.00 on the usual fabrics, and over that on anything the least bit special.
I think if I need anything from now on I'll shop around on line. Quite a few places on line have much better prices than that. 8-) |

Come down under and you will pay $22-$26 per meter. I am envious of the cheap prices you pay for your material and am addicted to many of your great online stores which send me yards of material for my stash!! I don't care if I have to pay for postage as it still works out at around one third cheaper!!
