Fabric on sale but the reason is sad... what pattern would you use>

I received an email yesterday from one of the LQS with some sad news. The owner's husband has just been diagnosed with terminal cancer (age 52) and she is closing her shop to spend what time he has left by his side.

Fabric has been reduced (25% off) so I picked up some yardage in my favourite colour-ways.

I thought first of doing a D9P, but I think the colours are too similar. There are 6 one metre pieces and the red on the bottom is for the backing.

What pattern would you use?

Having trouble uploading picture. Will try in next post.

How sad for the owner and her husband. I don't know of a pattern but I think a D9P would work.

Very sad situation but glad owner has priorities right. Gorgeous fabrics! I have been on a D9P roll lately and have made several of them. What about doing the Falling Charms quilt that is on MSQS video? You can do search on this QB and see examples. That is the next quilt I'm going to make.

Sad reason to close. The fabrics are beautiful. D9p would be pretty. I'd do a turquiose center square on all. Show it off when you're through. :)

I was going to suggest Falling Charms also. Just made one, and it was fun, but the next one I make will be with 2" background strips to have less negative space on the quilt and to show off the fabric squares more.

Do you have enough for a wickedly easy quilt? Add white, turquoise and some more of the green and I think it would work fine. Or maybe add white and do a D4P. Sorry to hear of her reason for closing. I have never regretted quitting work for a similar personal reason. I wish her the best in this time of change.

That is very sad news, can you please tell me which shop as we always get to them when visiting. I used to love the one that was out on St. Mary's and really missed it.
Even just squares would be nice with that modern fabric with alot of whites.

Quilter's Cottage in Stonewall.... it is such a shame.

I love the fabric! So many choices in patterns.....I would guess something with larger blocks to showcase the prints.

kat112000 11-07-2013 08:18 AM

Oh my gosh!! I went on a quilter's retreat that she put on! How sad!

Trisher 11-07-2013 08:28 AM

It sure is sad. She wants to talk about it but her husband doesn't, so she doesn't mind being in the store. It was busy in there yesterday, yet she talked to each of us customers as we told her how sorry we were.

I agree with dianna, Falling charms would really work better because there would be relief from the busy prints with a white background. I think you would have to add some tonals to use these fabric as a D9P because they are all busy prints. Sad that another LQS is closing.

Thanks for the input, my quilting friends. I have added (from my stash) more plain - green, white and aqua.
Now to get cutting!

Still haven't decided on whether to do a D9P (thanks for the advice on adding more green and some tonals) or a falling charm quilt but I need 5" squares regardless!

Most of it is Sugar & Spice by Riley Blake.

so sad for the shop owner.....your fabrics are lovely and the quilt you create from them will be a wonderful reminder of the time you spent in your favorite LQS

I think the stripe would be pretty as one of the borders, too.

I just made 84x84 quilt using 12.5 squares for my granddaughter. Sesame Street fabric and bright pink Kelly green and bright yellow. Backed it with lime green fleece. Really awesome and bright. Great for a very young baby. Maybe some thing like that could work .

1screech 11-10-2013 06:54 PM

Sorry for the situation, but it sounds like she knows her priorities. You are going to have a beautiful quilt with those fabrics. Does she have an online store?

No, just a bricks and mortar store.

raedar63 11-10-2013 10:34 PM

Sad to hear about the owners ....
The modern look of the fabric would be nice with a large chevron,a or one of the modern rail fence quilts I have seen, if you want a simple pattern.
