So that is what I did, I folded fabric from 1 yard to 5 yards and it looks nice.

Added bonus: no board to take up additional space. (Hey - we all cram here, 'fess up...)

I got mine out of thr recycle bin at work, it is plastic that is shaped like cardboard. I just started turning the spare room to a sewing room so I did it cheap...I just had to cut it down.

Marie Osmond has some plastic mini bolt holders for fat quarters. You can buy them at Quilters Warehouse.

I did the same thing because with the size of my stash I was afraid the boards would get too expensive. One extra thing I did: I cut a package of index cards in half, then I measured the fabric and wrote down the yardage and then folded the fabric and stapled the half index card to the front. No more guessing if there is enough yardage for a project. Index cards are a bit sturdier so they don't wrinkle when moving the fabric around.

I found acid free, cardboard supports used by collectors for storing comic books work well. I wrap my fabric pieces that are larger than 1/4 yd. and smaller than 2+ yds. My larger pieces used for backings go into a storage tub. You can get them at comic book stores and they are very reasonably priced. Acid free will not stain your fabrics over time.

I bought what they call "chip board" at my local craft store. 95 cents a board. Check out other sites on this quilting board many give demenison for cutting the board. You can buy already made ones ,but that is expensive.I wish I could remember the lady on here that helped me with that same question . I have been indebted to her. Happy quilting

Most quilt shops are more than glad to give you the empty cardboard bolts. I learned from a friend to cut them in half and they make GREAT storage for 1/2 - 2 yard pieces. I use the whole cardboard for bigger yardage.

cathylynn - what are these boards made of? I found some on line, but don't have a description & since they are white, pic is not too great.

Thanks

I went to Joanns and ask them what they are doing with the empty card board bolts and she answered oh we throw them out. So needless to say I got a lot of them free and cut them 10 1/2 inches so it would fit into my shelves. My hubby saw me doing that and he cut me the masonite board to size. Now I am in the process of winding my fabric up and store it into the shelves so I can see what I have.

verna2197 05-20-2011 01:41 PM

My DH did the same thing and what I actually did with the Masonite Board is cover them with old pillowcases. Just to make it look a little nicer. I have wire shelves so I needed something on the shelves so the material would not fall thru.

I have kids still at home and we go through a lot of cereal & pizza. I cut these cardboard boxes to the size I want 11.5" and wrap away.

The sheets are huge and I cut many sizes from each one.
Someone else will know what I mean :)

I think you are referring to Foam Core board. That should do a pretty good job. I just use my long 8" ruler and fold around it, fold fabric once or twice, depends on what size you want, and slip out the ruler. LQS does that.

Thanks so much - appreciate it.

I use the cardboard bolts that Joann's gives away. I cut some of them down to the "comic book" board size and wrap smaller pieces of fabric on them.

grandjan 05-20-2011 05:57 PM

Very often the fabric stores will give you empty bolts if you ask them. It's great for storing really large cuts of fabric.

debp33 05-20-2011 06:02 PM

I used comic book boards, too.

It's the coated cardstock-like thing collectors use to put behind their comic books when they store/display them.

JLMiller 05-21-2011 07:07 AM

walmart throws them away when they finish with a bolt ask if you can have the cardboard 9 times out of 10 they will give it to you then just wrap your material back around it.

applegramma 05-21-2011 07:15 AM

Thanks for the heads-up! I've found them and my order is on its way. Thank you!!!

lavona 05-21-2011 10:53 AM

i get shrink wrap at menards. it comes on a 5 inch roll and after i get my fabric wrapped, i put a couple wraps of the shrink wrap around it. it holds it so it won't unwrap and i write the amount of material i have on the shrink wrap

bbeyes 05-21-2011 10:55 AM

I went to Joannes and asked for the cardboard that the bolts of fabric are on and they are FREE and the right width just cut it to the size you want I used 11" I think haven't made any for long time. They only throw them in the trash

UCHSCPSYCH 05-21-2011 10:59 AM

What you are looking for can be found on Clotilda's website or in her catalog. I don't know what they are called but I inow I have seen them there. Looking at the other threads, it sounds like a lot of you have ideas that are much less expensive.

Yes, all my fabric is folded this way as well! Love it, and don't have to buy anything.

I went to a local sign shop and purchased coraplast boards that signs are made on, they were a great price, I brought them home and cut them to the size I wanted, they were about $1.30 per sheet , if I ever finish getting my stash organized I will post a picture, I keep finding more and more stashed fabric :D

your cat is absolutely beautiful. When I got my Siamese (95%) mix, she was a very light cream.. but now, at 16 mos, she is dark like yours... a real snuggle kitten.. Hansi gets along with my new cat also..(red tiger stripe w/white markings) Schatzi is my male, and Hansi is my female.. She is just 12 months older than him.... They get along so well..
