I've seen pictures on here where people have their fabric on shelves and the fabric is folded around something to where it looks like it's on a bolt, same as at the fabric store. I'm wondering what those things are and where I can find them? Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Is it a piece of cardboard that the fabric is wrapped around? Would a regular piece of cardboard work? Sorry I can't describe it better....

sueisallaboutquilts 05-19-2011 12:26 PM

I just went to the Dollar Store the other day and bought some of what you mean. It's core board I believe, sorry the name escapes me!
The sheets are huge and I cut many sizes from each one.
Someone else will know what I mean :)

Prissnboot 05-19-2011 12:29 PM

I cut regular fabric bolts out, and usually get 4 mini-bolts out of each fabric bolt. There is a company out there who sells plastic bolts roughly the same size as the ones I end up with (a little larger than a shoebox lid) and they claim that using fabric bolt cardboard will ruin your fabric over time, but I've never had problems with that, although I've only been storing my fabric like this for about a year or so. However, I love being able to see my fabric, and wouldn't store it any other way. BTW, this company (link: http://polarnotions.com) also sells bolts for fq's, but I find their products are a bit pricey for my taste and wallet.....

Hey, do you think if I made a wallet with reeeeeally deep pockets it would help? I mean, there would be more room for the money that way...

cathylynn 05-19-2011 12:36 PM

I purchased the silver edition comic book boards (100/$10.00) and folded my fabric around them and placed on a bookshelf.

craftybear 05-19-2011 12:36 PM

I had planned on using the boards too,and than I watched a video where the lady folded all her fabric on a 6 by24 inch ruler.
So that is what I did, I folded fabric from 1 yard to 5 yards and it looks nice.

Marion T 05-19-2011 12:42 PM

Our local fabric store keeps empty bolts for us, and we use those for larger pieces of fabric - keeps it nice and flat and wrinkle free. We just asked them what they did with the empty bolts, and they said they throw them out! So, now they get recycled!

carhop 05-19-2011 12:43 PM

You can go to Joanns and they will give them to you

nlpakk 05-19-2011 01:57 PM

I did the same thing and then stored them in plastic containers with drawers. You just open the drawer and you can see what you have. My drawers are arranged by the color of the fabric, I have 5 or 6.

dtippens 05-19-2011 02:27 PM

I went to Joann Fabrics and they gave me 2 huge carts of empty cardbord boltes. I just cut to the size I needed.
Works wonderful.. and didnt cost a thing.

You have to get these in the afternoon, The ladys working at
Joanns was grateful to give them to me, saved them trips to
the dumpster.

lovequilts 05-19-2011 03:22 PM

I just folded w/out the boards. I had one to wrap around but would pull it out. My fabric looks wonderful on my shelves

I always ask my LQS or Joann's if they have any empty bolts and I use them. :)

incoming2me 05-19-2011 09:49 PM

I have been re-organizing my entire stash
(except my fat quarters & scraps) on M.I.Late's Easy Cores..

LOVE LOVE LOVE them!

Besides the empty bolts for fabric, you can ask for the plastic doo-hickies that lace is wound on.

Hi...I have just reorganised my room (posted picures under So happy ..)and I wanted all my fabric sorted just like you because I had seen others with it looking great.
I ended up buying some Artist Mounting board (the stuff that boarders a picture in a frame). I cut one piece 18 x 51/2 to use as a folding guide (the cupboards were just too small to have 18x6 which I could have done round a ruler !) and then I cut the rest of the card into 12x 5 to make mini bolts. It was really easy to cut with my rotary cutter (blade will be useless afterwards though)......as the cardboard is used for paintings I thought it must be fairly safe........someone please tell me if it's not !

jmcdowell 05-20-2011 02:48 AM

I use the cardboard "silver boards" that are used to archive comic books. Found them at a comic book store and also at Amazon. Prices range between $9 - $11 for 100. They work great and are archival quality so there is nothing to bleed onto my fabric.

Krystyna 05-20-2011 03:04 AM

If you go to Joann or Walmart, they are happy to give you the empty bolts for free.

I think you are referring to foam board. Works great

MissJMac 05-20-2011 04:14 AM

Hancock, and probably other fabric stores, will give you all the cardboard you want free!!! As they empty their bolts, these boards are stored under the cutting table and are disposed at the end of the day. They gladly give you all the boards you want - saves them work at the end of the day. I've been getting them from Hancock and Walmart for years. ALL YA' GOTTA' DO IS ASK. :>)

FranM 05-20-2011 05:08 AM

I go to Hobby Lobby to their art department. Thee you can find cardboard pieces that are slightly larger than a fat quarter. Using the measurements provided by the member in Alaska, sorry I can't remember her name, you can get 20 smaller size cards for your small fabric pieces and a nice combination of large and small cards when trying to cut the larger size. I use an old rotary cutter which makes the process very quick and little waste.

What are these boards???

Janetlmt 05-20-2011 05:19 AM

I just spent almost a week reorganizing my fabric. It got to the point that I had no clue what I had. I bought the foam board sheets at the Dollar Tree....Price check...1.00 each..lol. I cut them up into 6 X 5 cards. I used them for anything that was less then 2 yards. I have a lot of yardage also. I went to Home Depot to buy Corplast sheets. They sell for about 6.00 a sheet. They are in with the cut glass and yard sale signs and driveway markers..asle 9. I cut the corplast into 12 x 7 cards. I used a large rotary cutter to cut both. I am not completely finished yet..but things are more organized. I have batiks yet and several boxes of fabric that are complete lines for future projects.
Price Check..DH and I were in Dollar Tree one day and a cashier who was in training asked over the intercom system...Price check on such and such item. Everyone in line cheered out ...1.00..duh.
Happy organizing..
Peace and Blessings

I have done the same thing and I am really pleased with the way it looks and the easy way to organize it.

Matboard can be archival or not and, of course, it's not marked. You have to ask if it's archival (or conservation or museum grade) when you buy it and it will cost much more than regular. Regular is made from wood pulp and goes for around $6 for a 32x40 sheet (half that for thinner sheets). Archival is made from cotton and is close to $14 per sheet. (Foamcore also comes both archival and non-archival)

rannyof3 05-20-2011 05:23 AM

go to your local fabric store. I got a BUNCH

sewnsewer2 05-20-2011 05:23 AM

I use foam board I get at the $ store, but somepne here sells the core boards. Check the for sale ads.

rannyof3 05-20-2011 05:24 AM

go to your local fabric store. I got a BUNCH from Jo Anns. They throw them away. I cut mine down a bit, but they work great... Good way to recycle.

regular card board from fabric bolts is not the best way...the acid and chemicals on them is not good for the fabric! if you must use them, cover them in freezer paper first!

reginalovesfabric 05-20-2011 05:47 AM

I used comic book boards, got them at a comic book store.
It is so nice to have your fabric where you can see what you have. Here is Hattiesburg, I got 100 for $6.99 but ended up using over 700 of them. I did not put my fat quaters on them I have two baskets full of fat quarters.
What can I say, I LOVE fabric.

HAHAHAH.....sound like me...I would need twice you used!

19angel52 05-20-2011 05:51 AM

I've used sheets of foam core board....bought a box of them online and cut them down. WalMart has them - not too badly priced. There are excellent blogs on how to make these mini bolts to wrap the fabric around....

Try this site for ideas!

I get empty bolts from my LQS. Cut them in half with a box cutter, fold my fabric in half fold side to selvedge side and wind 'em up. They fit nicely on my shelves and free is good plus they aren't going into the trash. Win-win all the way around.

juliea9967 05-20-2011 07:08 AM

Wallmart sells foam core board. I cut it to the size I want. They have the kind that is acid free.

I like these too. They also work quite well as the sturdy bottom of tote bags. :)

My DH cut me some cardboard (8x12) to wrap my material around, I then covered the cardboard in left over Christmas Saran Wrap. Then I went to Wal-Mart to the comestic department and purchased some hair clips that snap.

I saw clips almost just like this at a Fabric Store when I was in Texas, when I asked about the price, nearly fell over. So I said heck with it and just went to my local Wal-Mart.

I purchased large sheets of plastic canvas at our Walmart and cut them into pieces approx. 7 x 11 inches. Then wrap my pressed fabric around them. They fit nicely in my bookcase.

These are all 1 yd or more pieces.
