I just bought 11 different fabrics for a Harmony/Flying High quilt pattern from www.overrainbow.com. I cut the 5 light pieces last night and kept having such large leftover chunks of fabrics. I checked my order for this morning to make sure I had ordered the right amount. I measured the next piece which was suppose to be a 1& 1/8 yd. It was 1 & 1/4 yd. All of the pieces had generous amounts over the amount ordered. I sent the company an email this morning for cutting such generous amounts. I got a reply, and the owner said that after years of sewing and buying fabric only to find it came up short. She made it a company motto to Always Cut Generous Amounts For The Customer. What a great surprise for this day and time.

That is fantastic. I love it when I get a little extra. Don't expect to get any extra from Walmart they are greedy and will not cut you even a quarter of an inch extra. But oh well, I no longer buy my fabric at walmart anyways.

Quiltforme 01-08-2011 10:28 AM

I love that shop I only wish they had a store front!! The are so close to me but man!! I have never had a piece of fabric that I didn't like and they have always been so kind! (I am not affiliated with them I just love the store!!)

AnnieH 01-08-2011 11:50 AM

You lucky lot over there. Not as many bargains across the pond. Have fun.

4girlsmimi 01-08-2011 12:43 PM

How nice! There aren't many places like that around any more.

quilter on the eastern edge 01-08-2011 01:31 PM

OTR is my favourite online store - lovely fabrics and great service!

CarrieAnne 01-08-2011 01:48 PM

Thats so nice!

gale 01-08-2011 01:59 PM

nice! I'll be sure to remember that when I'm shopping. I'm pretty sure I found some things I liked there lately (but I'm trying to make, not buy).

sahm4605 01-08-2011 02:25 PM

Just a little warning, when typing in the address don't add the word the to it. you might not like where it sends you.

I think that is wonderful I just went there to check out their site. made a BIG oopps when typing in the url but luckily the kids didn't catch the site that popped up.

Threadedneedle 01-08-2011 02:30 PM

Depends on who or where. I just had a Wal Mart manager GIVE me 2 yards because he did not want to measure it the second time when I asked for more than I originally said. Good for him!!

amandasgramma 01-08-2011 02:31 PM

WARNING: Be sure to type in the correct link. www.overRAINBOW.com. NOT www.overTHErainbow.com. That's a gay site....ask me how I know....I gave the webpage address to my daughter....she thinks I'm crazy now. ROLMAO!

That sound like something I would do

beachlady 01-08-2011 04:49 PM

Thanks for the site - will check it out!

LCkitty 01-09-2011 04:48 AM

I have bought kits from Connecting Threads and they always give generous amounts of fabric. Love this as soon you have enough for a really scrappy quilt!

quilt3311 01-09-2011 05:05 AM

You can bet that shop has lots of satisfied customers, I would buy there if it were in my area. So now I will have to checkout the online shop. Thanks for sharing.

Camping Betty 01-09-2011 05:33 AM

our local handcocks has a chart on their cutting table that post the fabric to the inch! we often by fabric by the bolt for charity blankets and when they measure it , if there is an inch left they charge for that.

Camping Betty 01-09-2011 05:34 AM

I love connecting threads!

quiltlin 01-09-2011 06:34 AM

That's fantastic!!! And what a generous "extra". It is nice when shops cut at least an inch or two extra. Have been in some shops where they take the time to only give you exactly what you ordered. That's why I always usually buy at least 1/8 yard more than actually needed.....guess that's why I have sooooo many scraps.

amorerm 01-09-2011 06:34 AM

This is wonderful !! I just went to their site and searched "dog and bone". I can't find the post where one of the ladies wanted fabric for a dog quilt. Anyone out their that can help find this post would be helpful. The fabric they have at Over the Rainbow is WOW....check it out....especially the first two. What a great backing fabric or you could even make the entire quilt from this fabric. This link will take you right to the fabric. http://overrainbow.com/cgi-bin/Store/store.cgi And, you're sure to get enough fabric.

quilter in the making 01-09-2011 06:41 AM

It's recommendations like this that not only help your quilting friends, but help out the shop owner. I will definitely bookmark their site for my next purchase. Thanks!!

grannypat7925 01-09-2011 06:54 AM

Thanks for the info. That is good to know!

PattyS 01-09-2011 07:57 AM

I love this shop and have shopped with them often. I would like to more but pocketbook is tight but I feel like they are part of my family. Their newsletter sent out is always so interesting. Outside of the shop they have a farm with alpacas, peacocks, rabbits and recently a new puppy. Laura makes you look forward to the next newsletter to see how girls and Memaw and Pepaw are doing. Check them out for great fabrics, too. They just enlarged their shop so they have all kinds of fabric at www.overrainbow.com

eastermarie 01-09-2011 08:02 AM

I Made the same mistake the first time, too! I was alone in the den, but still looked around to see if anybody else had seen. I was not expecting that gay site. I probably should have put that in my first post but wasn't sure how to state it. Sorry for any embarrassment it caused. It sure embarrassed me.

Parrothead 01-09-2011 08:22 AM

I had the same experience when ordering from them. A little extra on each piece. Plus they were very prompt. I was so impressed with the first order, I ordered again.

katcox 01-09-2011 09:04 AM

What would we do without all the ones that give us the answers before we ask. thanks for THE tip.lol

scrappylouisa 01-09-2011 09:17 AM

I love Over the Rainbow! I've ordered from them several times and always received extra fabric. They are very reasonable on their prices, carry the latest fabrics and have great customer service.

JanetM 01-09-2011 09:46 AM

I have ordered from them several times and am a very satisfied customer. They are very careful to cut generously, and their service is great. They have a very good selection of fabrics, and notions...great company.

Wish I had that problem...many of my shops give half an inch but others are right on the line...those shops I have to watch carefully as I have been shorted...by at least 1/2 inch...so codos to you and this shop!

New knee 01-09-2011 01:09 PM

I had the same experience with a kit I ordered from Connecting Threads--very generously cut. But I find at JoAnn's they cut very sparingly. I guess "you get what you pay for" is true.

I used to buy my fabrics at Walmart all of the time until they discontinued it. I never had a problem and the craft department ladies were quite friendly and informative.

JS 01-09-2011 02:15 PM

Laura is a friend of mine and they try to do everything they can for the customer. Wonderful people.

vivoaks 01-09-2011 02:37 PM

I've ordered from this shop several times, and they are always very good, and personable as well. I would not hesitate to let my friends order from them. (Their prices are always below retail, too!)

Tweety2911 01-09-2011 03:08 PM

Customer service lives on. Nice to hear.

Not my Hancocks. They would give me the extra inch or 2 and if there was a small amount left like 1/4 - 1/2 yd, they'd offer it to me at a reduced charge.

craftymatt2 01-09-2011 04:28 PM

what great customer service, i will have to try that site, and Thank you for sharing

jitkaau 01-09-2011 05:21 PM

I think it is delightful when you realise that a lot of business people are also in the game to provide a service because they love the craft. A friend of mine was told she had to pay for a major service and part for her overlocker because it was skipping stitches. Her husband was prepared to spend up to $200 to have it fixed. I took it to my LQS as he is a good technician. He found it to be a build - up of lint behind the tension discs and charged $40...
