Which fabrics to choose?

2 Attachment(s)
I want to make a DP9 and am trying to use mostly fabrics from my stash. Which of these fabrics would you use? My fav is the beige with the flowers, but what would you put with it? Choosing fabrics has never been my strong suit!

Please help! Quilt Inspector is keeping my sewing chair warmed for me while we await your input..........lol

I like them all. Personally, I'd leave out the polka dots to make it a more "calming" quilt, or put them in for a little pizzazz; just depends on the effect you're going for.

CajunQuilter2 02-12-2012 11:53 AM

I like the 1st 4 from left to right. Good luck choosing

AnnieH 02-12-2012 11:53 AM

IMHO all except the red. Lovely lovely fabrics. Good luck.

I would use 2, 3, and 4 just using the 3 colors or 3, 4 and 6. I'm sure whatever you use will be beautiful.

I might use the polka dots a little on the front and a LOT on the back! Love the left 4!

dunster 02-12-2012 12:51 PM

I like them all, but I also lean to the 1st 4. How many fabrics do you want in your D9P? The inspector doesn't look like he intends to move, at least not until dinner time.

barny 02-12-2012 12:56 PM

Since the inspector isn't looking, I would use the 1st 4 or 5 . The red is beautiful, but looks too red.

alfosa421 02-12-2012 01:20 PM

I think they all would work

kozygirl 02-12-2012 01:23 PM

I would use the first four fabrics.

Cybrarian 02-12-2012 01:31 PM

How many fabrics do you need? I like them all and I think I see both the red & the orange in the polka dot, but I'm thinking they might "fight each other" in a D9P? I'd go with the red over the orange if it were me- but it's not, so what does your artist eye tell you when you close your eyes?

Jan in VA 02-12-2012 02:04 PM

Use them all! And add in one that is darker yet than any shown because you're good in the light and medium value range. Gonna be a darling quilt, can't wait to see it!

I would use them all. I can hardly wait to see it when you are finished

irishrose 02-12-2012 02:27 PM

I would use all except the red. Put the strongest color in the center and make sure the dots go in a center position on a side so they get cut in half. If you do use the red, put it in the center so it becomes smaller squares.

Reposition your 'audition' so the red is not showing as much with the beige floral on top. Maybe we are just seeing too much red in the current pic.

I have made 3 D9P and the last one I used a "rule" from a talented lady on this board. I would use the first6 4 of your fabrics left to right. I would make the corner squares blue and the centers gold and use the two lights for the other squares. Can't tell if that is rust color in the first print and far right print. Polka dot could be used along with the two beiges, but it looks more white background ?? The "rule" I used is make all corner squares dark or light and the center square dark or light and do the other squares opposite of the corners and center, I love dark corners and dark middle square and the rest light. This makes a definite pattern and not scrappy looking. This is just my opinion and whatever you choose to do will be special. Sorry I don't have a pic to share.

mighty 02-12-2012 04:57 PM

They all would look great. I think it just depends how many colors you want to use.

I agree with Jan in Va. I think a dark fabric would add depth and pop.

Jackie Spencer 02-12-2012 06:38 PM

I like them all. The red could be your zinger.

Gladys 02-12-2012 06:46 PM

I like the first four and if you needed another do you have a green you could add?

Using just 3? I'd use the beige flowers for the outside corners. The orange for the inside square and the blue for the middle edge pieces.

Add to last post----------------(edit is a pain!)
Maybe red instead of orange for the center block

Silver Needle 02-12-2012 08:08 PM

If #1 is you favorite, I would select #2 from the left as the center of all the 9 patches. It will bring in a neat secondary design in your quilt. The polka dot may have too much white and jump out at you unless you 9 patch is quite large.

Dolphyngyrl 02-12-2012 11:08 PM

all of them IMHO

Annaquilts 02-12-2012 11:14 PM

orange, blue and polka dot

katigirl 02-13-2012 12:14 AM

I like the first three personally.

sewbeadit 02-13-2012 02:31 AM

Beautiful fabrics, beautiful cat. All the fabrics are nice. I don't know how to help.

earthwalker 02-13-2012 02:35 AM

Love 'em all!

lfletcher 02-13-2012 05:37 AM

I would use the first 3. Since the floral is your favorite, I would put it in the 4 corners. I would put the blue in the center and then the orange in the other 4 places. When you cut it each way, the blue would be the little square and the orange would be like sashing. I think it would pop nicely and the biggest pieces would be your favorite.

so-sew 02-14-2012 03:54 AM

I think if you take out the polka dots everything will blend better. The polka dots might be a fun and whimsical backing, or at least part of a backing.

Gleniveve 02-14-2012 04:11 AM

I feel that all would work with your design but the red could be a little bit overpowering.
I especially like the furry one in the second picture. Really fits right in and is quite at home.
Beautiful baby. Gleniveve.

roadrunr 02-14-2012 05:23 AM

I would also use all the colors except red. You can make several different blocks and after cutting them in quarters, you have a variety of ways of putting them back together. I'm working on a D9P now and I'm using several different colors of purple. It's looking good. I'm at work now, so I can't post a pic.

I agree! Keep us posted!

KimS 02-14-2012 05:54 AM

I like the 4 fabrics from the left. Looks like your quilt inspector is very, very busy making sure your chair doesn't run away. ;)

sahm4605 02-14-2012 05:56 AM

I love the beigh with the flowers and the blue together. and maybe the orange or red for the center square. but that is just me. post when you are done.

dahlshouse 02-14-2012 06:19 AM

Like your choices but would leave out the polka dot...

Exactly what I was thinking. A darker green might work well.

bigsister63 02-14-2012 06:55 AM

Like 1-4 and could use polk-a-dot as inner small border. Red might be too bright for sashing or could br used for another inner border.

star619 02-14-2012 07:10 AM

Maybe 1-4 for the quilt and the polka dot for a border(large or smal)l. You'll know the right size when you audition it. Please let us see it when it's done.

kydeb 02-14-2012 07:33 AM

I would use all but the dots and red :) Love your fabrics!!

cpcarolyn 02-14-2012 07:38 AM

I like the first 4. I would leave out the polka dot and the red.
