I am SOOO bummed!!! I was born and raised in So. Cal, lived there for 40+ yrs, and never knew it was there. I spent all winter out there last year (all of my family still lives there), went to Disneyland etc. and STILL didn't know it was there. I missed out on the BEST fun of all!!   So where is this wonderful place so I won't miss it next time I'm out there???

Deborahlees 10-19-2011 08:56 AM

I have lived in California all my life and heard of M&L fabrics in Anaheim, but never been.....now I will have to go....will start saving up my pennies so I can make it worth my while.....what a fun day

That fabric store looks incredible; AND I love the "trolley" ! Here in the South we call them "buggy's", but we all know what they are !

My problem would be is that I would so overwhelmed with all that fabric unless I had a detailed list of exactly what I was looking for....I would either do one of two things...shut down completely and not be able to choose anything, or buy helter-skelter and end up with a lot of stuff, but nothing that I could use together.

I've been to Hancocks in Paducah and almost had a panic attack (seriously) there was so much and I couldn't decide...ended up sitting on a bench and waiting for my daughter......NEXT time I go, I'll be prepared !

vickyfortune 10-19-2011 10:22 AM

All I can say is....OH....MY....GOD!!! All that's missing is the Pearly Gates. :D :D

That store has changed a lot since the 90's. It used to look like a dump that was just a fabric outlet. It
had ladies in babooshkas who didn't speak English who would practically cut your arms off if you touched one of the very few carts for your fabric. The flannels were flatfolds that were almost stacked to the ceiling of poor quality but cost only $1.00 per yard. In the windows there were miles and miles of cheesy curtain nylon and nothing was computerized so check-out was really a trial.
I'm told that it has been taken over by a newer generation that has it's feet in the current century and thus the store you see in these pictures.

It's on Ball Road near Knotts Berry Farm. Google it and you'll find the exact address. My daughter lived on Ball Road before she was married. We visited her many times but I didn't find out about M & L until after they moved. Still pretty close but I wish I would have known sooner.

DeAnne-Mn. 10-19-2011 10:46 AM

Can't believe you got out of there in only four hours! What fun for all of you.

joyce888 10-19-2011 11:10 AM

Looks like you guys had a great time and what a fabulous shop!

fmhall2 10-19-2011 11:20 AM

I used to live in southern California, but it was before I was a quilter. Where is this M & L fabric store? In what town? Thanks for the info.

grannypat7925 10-19-2011 02:00 PM

Quilting friends are the best!!!

I've been to M & L several times and it is fantastic and it did used to be a supermarket (Alpha Beta I think). I biggest problem is that I spend way too much money when I go.

Wow, sounds like the perfect vacation to me, a wonderful quilt shop, Disneyland, family, new friends, what more could one ask for? Super, loved the pictures. :-)

Looks like you had a great time. You would love MaryJos in Gastonia, North Carolina and I would gladly take you there if ever you got to my part of the country.

wraez 10-19-2011 02:59 PM

So glad that you discovered this wonderful place. It is my favorite place to spends hours looking thru flat folds.

But I am grateful that I live about an hour away or I would go too often and spend too much. A few years ago I spent over $500 in one visit and still have much of that fabric. It is easy for a fabric-oholic to go overboard. I heard that they have raised prices. Last time I was there about a year ago, the flat folds were $1.99yd, up from 1.69 a few years earlier.

It is on the corner of Knott and Ball. Across the street is a great place to get a bite to eat if you like Mexican food. I don't remember the name, a friend and I stop in and have lunch when we do a day at M&L.

That is how I remember that store!! That is why I have not been back in years. Now seeing these pics, I will have to make a trip there and soon. I only live in Anaheim where M&L is located!! No this is exciting...

craftysuzi2 10-19-2011 03:55 PM

I use to live down close to there and really miss being able to shop. It is an old grocery store. Happy you had a wonderful experience.

OMG - I think you found Fantasyland, and it wasn't at Disneyland. Lucky you, and how nice to have someone to share the experience with. I'm so jealous - wish I could have shared the experience with you.

I also live about 20 min. away. I can always find something I need there. The last time I was there, it seemed that the prices had gone up a fair amount, but still much lower than other stores. It's a great place.

quiltluvr 10-20-2011 10:25 AM

i'm just about 4 hours away and haven't been for quite some time. what are the prices now?

they were about $8 a yard for the newer. i got a ton of blenders for 5 or 6 if i remember right.

The flat folds were like $2.49 but I got newer fabric (like Robert Kaufman and Moda fabrics) for anywhere between $2.98 - $5.98. There were also some for normal retail prices ($8-11 a yard). I also picked up a ton of Kona solids that I just can't get over here....it was still cheap by NZ prices.

TacoMama 10-20-2011 09:14 PM

Oh my stars! What a store. Wish I were a little closer, I think........

quiltluvr 10-20-2011 10:34 PM

thanks for the price update!

it's quite a store for sure. miss shopping there. glad you got to visit and take home some new treasures.

Marilynsue 10-22-2011 03:54 PM

I got to visit there last April while visiting my daughter. Even my 6 YO DGD enjoyed our shopping trip. She decided while we were fabric shopping that she is going to visit her DGM in Michigan and learn to quilt! I told her to hold that thought.....one day we'll do it!
