I have just returned from a visit to Disneyland and LA with my family. Prior to going I had posted on this board about the best shops to go to while I was there. Janet (carslo) very kindly offered to take me to M & L Fabrics. OMG...this is the most amazing fabric store that I have ever been in and considering the price of fabric in New Zealand (about USD$20 a metre), I was in heaven.

Janet and her friend Clara picked me up at 11.30 and I think we returned 4 hours later!!! I spent a considerable amount of money there and had to buy an extra suitcase to get all the fabric home!! I cannot thank Janet and Clara enough for their kindness. We had such a fabulous time and shared lots of laughs and stories.

Me on the left, Janet and Clara

It really is a fabric supermarket. Enjoy your purchases.

So glad you had a wonderful time and stocked up!! Please let us see what you make with your "bargain" fabrics!

KerryK 10-18-2011 01:18 PM

Wow! What a store! and how nice of them!

Jim's Gem 10-18-2011 02:15 PM

Glad that you had a great time. I have been in there several times. Considering going in a couple of days if I can get down there to visit my Grandson.

Xstitshmom 10-18-2011 02:17 PM

Wowzers! That looks fantastic!

redquilter 10-18-2011 02:39 PM

AmyBaby 10-18-2011 02:42 PM

so glad you got to see M&L. I am very fortunate (or as my husband thinks - unfortunate) to live about 20 minutes from M&L. it's awesome! Hope you enjoy all your wonderful fabric!

sandybeach 10-18-2011 03:07 PM

I LOVE that store. I have only been there twice as it is a 3-hour drive from me. But I am sure I will manage to get back there soon.

carslo 10-18-2011 03:12 PM

Yes, indeed we had an awesome time! Clara and I were thrilled to met hannicks and go shopping with her! It was a pleasure and delight to share time with a sister quilter.

Tweety2911 10-18-2011 03:14 PM

alikat110 10-18-2011 03:27 PM

I haven't been there since I can NOT drive anymore. Haven't found anybody who wants to make the trip. I have been shopping there for over 30 years. I remember when flat folds were $1.39 a yard !! This is the 3rd location as they outgrew the previous stores. I LOVED to dig thru the flat folds. I would always make it an all day excursion. Closed the shop many times. Glad you got to see and experience it !!

I live in Anaheim where M & L is located and I haven't been there for a long time. Looking at your pictures it has really changed....for the better, since I was last there. I forsee a field trip for myself in the near future! I must have missed your post about being in this area. There are several other quaint quilt shops in the area but you hit the granddaddy of them all and probably the best priced fabrics. Glad you had such a wonderful time. Were you here for our heat wave?? Hopefully the weather was beautiful for you.

dunster 10-18-2011 05:07 PM

I had no idea this place existed. We will be driving down to the San Diego area next month, visiting kids, and I will try to visit M&L on the way there or on the way back.

kim_s 10-18-2011 05:20 PM

I am only about half an hour from m&l and have never even been there! I am thinking i best be getting myself down there!

What a great vacation: Disneyland, LA, fabric shopping, and meeting new quilting friends! How fun!

scowlkat 10-18-2011 06:21 PM

Reminds me of Mary Jo's in Gastonia, NC! So nice that you got to meet up and had such a wonderful time!

Sunflower Girl 10-18-2011 06:32 PM

How wonderful that you could all get together! Friends without borders!!

soccertxi 10-18-2011 06:35 PM

The 1st time I got to visit M&L, my friend from the AOL quilt chat took me. I got so overwhelmed, I had to go to lunch and come back! I got to go last summer when my youngest played a soccer tournament. We stayed right across the street from Disney, so M&L was not very far. A whole group went to Downtown Disney while I drove off into the sunset to shop at M&L. Its a good place to have a LIST! lolol

blueangel 10-19-2011 01:09 AM

What a store.

Amythyst02 10-19-2011 02:55 AM

harvsstuff 10-19-2011 03:04 AM

vivoaks 10-19-2011 03:11 AM

Wow! That place really IS huge!!! So glad you had such fun!! Hope the rest of your visit to the U.S. was as successful!!

Extreme Quilter 10-19-2011 03:19 AM

If you get on their e-mail list, they will notify you of twice-a-year sales where it is 20%, if I recall, off of everything in the store. Now, that is really worth a trip!

kuntryquilter 10-19-2011 03:28 AM

This fabric shop reminds me of Hancocks of Paducah, in Kentucky.

Dolphyngyrl 10-19-2011 03:48 AM

My aunt goes there all the time and she says the prices are excellent for quality fabric

born2bfree67 10-19-2011 03:54 AM

OMG! that is a great store. We have nothing like that here on long island. I would love to open a quilt store and fill it with rows and rows of faboulous fabrics and have quilting classes every day!

johnnietate1225 10-19-2011 04:14 AM

So sweet of the girls to meet you and so glad you saw things you might not have seen on your own. Hope you sew lots of things and share with us.

SoozeeDoozee 10-19-2011 04:36 AM

When my best friend took me there in the early 90s, one half of the store had blowout priced flat folds in stacks about a foot taller than my arms would reach. Wow, was that fun. Thanks for rekindling a great memory.

grumpy90650 10-19-2011 04:59 AM
