Fake Cathedral Window - I just had to give it a try.

We visited Missouri Star Quilting Shop this summer and Jenny went through several tutorials with us right there. It was wonderful. The latest one that her daughter came up with using precuts was the fake cathedral window. It was so new that they hadn't created a tutorial for it yet. I thought it was so cool, but when I got home and tried it, I couldn't remember the details and couldn't find a tutorial. Well, when we visited Missouri Star a few weeks ago, I asked for the demo again, but Jenny was not available. The ladies were nice enough to call one of her daughters to the shop and she demo it for me again, and I took pictures to help me remember.

I wanted to make a quilt, but decided I should experiment first on a smaller level, starting with 2.5" squares. It takes some planning because you have to lay it out if you want the designs to interlock. My first one finished 12"x 12" and I stitched in the ditch, and the second one, where I experimented with a different layout, finished 16"x 16". I used the QAYG method on the second one because I thought additional quilting would take away from the design.

I'm hooked, so on graph paper I sketched out a pattern and purchased the fabric. Since we have another snow day (number 8 this year), I'll be cutting out my quilt using 5" squares and a few charm packs from our shop visit. When I start sewing, I'll be using the quilt as you go method breaking it up into manageable sections.

What do you think?

Oh my, those are beautiful! You did a great job. Were they hard to do?

ArtsyOne 02-27-2013 08:50 AM

That is beautiful!! What's the "fake" part of the cathedral window? They look real to me.

craftycancer 02-27-2013 08:55 AM

sahm4605 02-27-2013 09:13 AM

jcrow 02-27-2013 09:22 AM

Quiltngolfer 02-27-2013 12:21 PM

pyffer3 02-27-2013 12:27 PM

I want to do a cathedral window quilt in the near future and would love to see how you did this. You colors are beautiful. Please give us a tutorial!

MadQuilter 02-27-2013 05:25 PM

I found this youtube on the very same topic a while back and tried it. Isn't it also known as the 10-minute block in other circles?

It is very similar to that youtube, MadQuilter, but all my squares start off the same size. These both started with 2.5" squares, but my quilt will start with 5" squares. Here are a few pictures I took while I was working on the first one. I shouldn't since I'm a writing teachers, but I feel that a picture is worth 1000 words. Hope they help.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 02-27-2013 07:51 PM

I did a similar thing with the 10 minute blocks. The trick was getting the pieces inserted between two blocks so there would be a window in the offset row. Maybe your way will be easier.

LAQUITA 02-27-2013 09:02 PM

Sweet, I really like this! Thank you for sharing it with us!

MamaInRed 02-27-2013 09:46 PM

Wow, that looks so cool the way you did this. I wanted to try the 10 minute block, but thought there was a lot of wasted fabric that way. This looks so much better. Thanks for sharing. Now I have another one to add to my ever growing list to try.

janiesews 02-28-2013 07:08 AM

Very pretty!

helenhiwater 02-28-2013 07:19 AM

Aha! It has been years since I did cathedral quilting. As I recall, it was like doing a cootie catcher with lots of ironing and only two colors. Yours looks much nicer and easier. Love the lavender and gray!

brenwalt 02-28-2013 07:23 AM

Wow!! YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS Am going to try this. Thanks so much for sharing!!

luvstoquilt 02-28-2013 07:26 AM

I want a tut! What a lovely piece of work!

twinkie 02-28-2013 07:29 AM

Doesn't look like a fake to me. I love it.

IQ2 02-28-2013 07:34 AM

There's a tute on this board by Eddie called "Machine Stitched Cathedral Window Tutorial". It looks like these windows. I don't know how to post a link to it. I tried it and it was a lot of fun.

Morag 02-28-2013 07:42 AM

I do like this adaptation to a point....I have made two cathedral window quilts and it is a labour of love for sure. It took me about two years to complete each one..... I have to say that I love all the tutorials MOSQC does and look forward to this one but I do prefer the original traditional design!!

Pink Dogwood 02-28-2013 07:45 AM

Oh my goodness that is beautiful. You are sooooo talented. My mother made several pillows by hand years ago and I love mine, but DO not hand sew, so I thought just admiring mine was all I could do. Now you have opened up the possibility that I may be able to do this by machine. I will be experimenting...THANKS for sharing and thereby giving me some encouragement. Off I go to experiment.......

Wardy74 02-28-2013 08:00 AM

It is gorgeous. I have never done cathedral window so I will have to have a go at this.

That is so pretty! And a big hello from a former Blue Springs resident. I'm missing the snow here in GA but we may get a little dusting this weekend.

If I could box you up some snow, I'd send you some. We have at least 2-3+ feet piled everywhere. Roofs and docks are falling in. I'm ready for spring.

Jackie R 02-28-2013 06:42 PM

It's beautiful!

AuntieD 02-28-2013 06:42 PM

great looking cathedral windw!

maryellen2u 03-01-2013 03:04 AM

Whoo Hoo! This is gorgeous. I could not spot a "fake" anything. You are good!

ghquilter53 03-01-2013 04:15 AM

Very nice. I found that pressing those curves with a good hot iron that I didn't need to pin. Saved time.

irquilter 03-01-2013 04:23 AM

I love the lay out of you second quilt, unique and full of nice movement, wow!

cmierley 03-01-2013 04:37 AM

Are your squares a single layer? If so do you double roll to hide the raw edges.

pinebeltquilter 03-01-2013 05:30 AM

I just love them! Good job.

grayladym 03-01-2013 05:55 AM

Lovely. I really like the random one. Sounds like we'd all like a tut. Looking forward to seeing it.

BCM 03-01-2013 05:59 AM

Thank you for sharing. To a beginner like me, this quilt has always looked challenging . Yours is lovely! Enjoy the days!

Audrey 03-01-2013 06:07 AM
