Favorite "celebrity" quilters

Many years ago Eleanor Burns appeared on our local PBS station on Saturday mornings and I fell in love with her simplified methods of quilting. She remains one of my favorites today.

Nancy (Zimmerman) should be ZIEMAN caught my attention because of her wonderful methods for sewing clothes on the same local PBS station following Quilt in a Day. She remains one of favorites as well. She has evolved into quilting and machine embroidery along with her wonderful methods for apparel.

Have watched lots of Fons & Porter as well along with Sue from Husqvarna and others. Loved Alex Anderson's Simply Quilts on HGTV. Wow, she was good and had loads of good guests.

Now added to my favorite list is Jenny Doan. She is every bit as good as the others. Her methods are simple and love her presentation on the Missouri Star Quilt Company tutorials. This woman is wonderful.

Who are your favorites?

Eleanor Burns in person is HILARIOUS!

quilter2090 07-09-2013 12:16 PM

I first started watching Quilt in a Day and Fons and Porter's Love of Quilting. I like to also watch Sewing with Nancy, with Nancy Zieman. I haven't watched a TV program with Nancy Zimmerman. What is the title of Ms. Zimmerman's show?

It is Nancy Zieman and her show is Sewing with Nancy. It's been on PBS for 30+ years. She does all kinds of sewing - not just limited to quilts.

SingerSewer 07-09-2013 12:43 PM

Yes, I messed up. I was thinking about Darlene Zimmerman who appears with Nancy semi-frequently. My error. It is Nancy Zieman.

QuiltnNan 07-09-2013 12:46 PM

my favorites are all you listed, but especially EB

EdieClay 07-09-2013 12:56 PM

The only sewing/quilting shows on Dish are Fons and Porter's Love of Quilting and Sewing with Nancy with Nancy Zieman. They are on PBS in my area on Sunday afternoon. As soon as church is over, I head home and turn on the TV to watch these two shows. My husband knows not to ask me anything until these shows are over ... lol.

ann clare 07-09-2013 12:59 PM

Jenny Doan is my favourite.

ckcowl 07-09-2013 01:08 PM

along with the ones you named I also love Judy Martin... I have learned lots from all of the mentioned quilters and enjoy being able to sit down & watch a 1/2 hour show- in my book beats paying for a class (although catching a class/workshop with any of them is a WONDERFUL experience and one to take advantage of if the opportunity arises!)

Congratulation Edie, you got him WELL TRAINED !!!

I do miss Simply Quilts. That was an excellent show showing a variety of techniques but who could NOT enjoy EB. I have met her in person on numerous occasions. She is actually funnier in person !! I do miss Marianne Fons dry whit and her vast experience in quilting.

ckcowl 07-09-2013 01:48 PM

oh-shame on me- I forgot to add...Mark Lipinski & Ricky Timms! they are both Fabulous to watch, and have the most entertaining, fun packed full of learning classes/workshops out there!

mawluv 07-09-2013 01:55 PM

Jenny Doan,she's a super star!!!

ghostrider 07-09-2013 02:25 PM

The 'celebrity' quilters I favor are not on television. They are the Master Quilters, the Century Quilters, and the Hall of Famers who show their work around the world in exhibitions, galleries and museums. Hollis Chatelain, Michael James, Ruth McDowell, Jean Ray Laury, Nancy Crow, Nancy Halpern, Libby Lehman, Jane Sassaman, and dozens of other greats. I am in awe of their work and can stare at their quilts for hours on end. Ground breakers all.

Nammie to 7 07-09-2013 02:34 PM

Those are my quilt shows as well. I don't get to watch them very often though - Saturday mornings are busy around here.

quiltsRfun 07-09-2013 02:58 PM

She's not on anymore but Georgia Bonesteel is the one who got me started on my quilting journey. I have to say Jenny Doan is my current favorite, although I watch all the others who were mentioned. Didn't get cable in time to catch any of Simply Quilts but wish I had.

misspriss 07-09-2013 03:23 PM

I have U-Verse and we don't get any quilt shows. Once in awhile Sew It comes up on public TV. Use to get them all when on Dish. :(

GailG 07-09-2013 03:34 PM

Simply Quilts was my favorite and is the one I miss the most. Our PBS stations have only one quilting show per week -- at 5 AM on Create. I loved the guests that appeared on SQ as well as Alex. The few times that I attended the Martha Pullens School in Huntsville and the Sewing Market in Arlington, I was privileged to have classes and meet Alex Anderson, Sue Hausmann, Kaye Wood, and Clotilde. There was another quilter that I loved but her name escapes me at the moment. She did such creative things with the nine patch. She had blond hair which was worn straight with bangs. Oh, and there was Mary Ellen HOpkins of "The It's Okay if you Sit on my Quilt Book." Who can forget Mary Ellen and her practical approach to strip quilting. AND ---the Quilt! Quilts!! Quilts!!! gals, Diana McClun and Laura Nownes. Laura Nownes is doing the BOM on Craftsy this year.

What would I do without Jenny?! And Amy Gibson on Craftsy was also great.

ewecansew 07-09-2013 03:39 PM

There is just news today that Mary Ellen Hopkins has passed away--July 9, 2013. RIP Mary Ellen. You taught a lot of us quick and easy methods of quilting and it is okay to sit on my quilt because I can make another one and have fun doing it!

Tartan 07-09-2013 04:31 PM

My current favourites are Bonnie Hunter and Jenny Doan.

leaha 07-09-2013 04:33 PM

oh dear I so loved to watch her, she was so much fun! will miss her

Elise1 07-09-2013 04:47 PM

Bonnie Hunter recently visited a LQS. She was so warm and friendly and her quilts were absolutely gorgeous. Seeing her quilts in person you see a level of detail that you can't see in a picture. She has a sense about putting together her scrappy quilts that I am in awe of.

I also had the pleasure of attending a trunk show of Edyta Sitar's this summer. Her quilts were amazing and I loved hearing her talk about the process of designing fabrics, creating patterns, making quilts, publishing books, etc. She was a real inspiration.

Sadly, my idiot cable company has no quilt shows. Before I began quilting I ran across several cable quilt shows; now there are none. Many years ago, though, I watched Nancy on our PBS channel, I think, and was always impressed by her knowledge, skill, and ability to impart information. I've seen a few Fons and Porters shows but before I knew enough about what they were doing. I do love the Youtube Jenny Doan programs. She's the most unassuming, cheerful, and personable tv quiltmaker I've ever seen on tv. Wish my cable carried her show.

SingerSewer 07-09-2013 05:42 PM

Also many years ago on the local PBS there was Quilting the Heartland and the woman's name was Shar or something like that. Seems like she was from Wisconsin or Michigan. Don't remember but she was a little different in her presentations and I learned from her as well.

judylg 07-09-2013 07:16 PM

When this caught my eye, the word celebrity stood out. I was so happy to see true quilting celebrities mentioned, instead of one of the movie or tv stars names. That is great!

Cybrarian 07-09-2013 07:31 PM

I have found reruns of Simply Quilts on HGTV.com, I have a subscription to The Quilt Show on the Internet with Alex Anderson & Ricky Tims. Great show and many extras on the site worth every penny, but you have access to many things without paying anything. Love it and all the others mentioned as well.

kathdavis 07-09-2013 08:41 PM

I think we will be hearing a lot more from/about Jenny Doan. I was fortunate to have visited her shop and we got a private demo from her. She is easy to speak with and she seems very comfortable in this quilting environment.

DOTTYMO 07-09-2013 10:10 PM

In UK Jenny reymant on create and craft although much better in person. We used to get quilt in a day but has stopped so many watch utube s.
You are so lucky to have so many.

SusanSusan33 07-10-2013 02:41 AM

I love Jenny doan. She seems so darn sweet. Really genuine.

KarenJ 07-10-2013 02:43 AM

Bonnie Hunter!

gsbuffalo 07-10-2013 02:54 AM

ditto and Eleanor burns

Aquarius 07-10-2013 03:04 AM

I love Eleanor Burns also, have watched her videos over and over again. I am also a friend of Bonnie Hunter of Quiltville and watch her live cam show on Facebook. I have learned a lot from her. I also miss Simply Quilts. That was my favorite show.

chips88 07-10-2013 03:27 AM

nancy's notions i can understand her and she is very easy to follow in her directions.

Wonnie 07-10-2013 05:50 AM

They all have great qualities but Jennie Doan is my all-time favorite!!! Simple, uncluttered, happy, down to earth, pleasant joyful voice, talented... not to mention, great family participation, marvelous customer service, REASONABLE prices on products and shipping.

tessagin 07-10-2013 06:00 AM

I like most of them. I try to tape some because it's hard for me to sit and watch a video. I fall asleep in a movie theatre unless it's action packed.

Ms Kay 07-10-2013 06:10 AM

I don't get any shows on quilting. I have cable and live in Massachusetts. I love Jenny and all the quilting on utube

fangman 07-10-2013 06:21 AM

I enjoy them all.

Rose Marie 07-10-2013 06:43 AM

Jenny Doans is on You Tube where you can watch all her videos.
Eleanor Burns has her shows on her website Quilt In A Day.
Very little on TV anymore.

GailG 07-10-2013 06:50 AM

This morning I read on another thread that Mary Ellen has passed away. So sad. But she does leave her memory, her books, and the love of practical quilting that she has instilled in many.

Gabrielle's Mimi 07-10-2013 07:13 AM

If you are in California, make a trip to Eleanor Burns' store/studio and watch her production. She is just hilarious in person, and it's so nice to see so many family members working together. She has a remarkable personal story, and in spite of many difficulties has created a lasting legacy in quilting, and done it all with a sense of humor and humility.

diamondee 07-10-2013 08:03 AM

I love Bonnie, Eleanor, Nancy & Jenny, I can see them on youtube, so I am not sure if they are celebrities but I have a few favs lik Marguerita Mcmanus and Rose Smith I have learned a lot from. Alex and Tim (don't get to see them much) I tried to watch fons and porter and quilting arts but I felt it was geared more to the younger veiwer, just couldn't get passed that. but most of my "Shows" come from youtube.
