Just wondering what is your favorite color of fabric and do you like solids, muted, florals, dots conversation, swirls or such. Where do you eyes guide you the most when you go fabric shopping????

maggiebooboo 06-19-2008 06:21 AM

Right now I am looking for the perfect floral. I want to make a quilt like Loretta's Roses in the snow. So I am looking for a floral that I can match up a nice solid to. Not sure what color yet. Kind of thinking about red an white.

bebe 06-19-2008 06:27 AM

I have a tendency to buy americana, turkey red or yellows cival war colors. I love the colors in the new blackbird design collection. Christmas fabric is great!!!!!

I like fabric that has design on it not necessarily big florals. No real fan of solids but like muted look fabrics.

I like many colors but my stash has mostly red and Collections by brannock and Patek, black bird designs and robin pandolph. You are right I just love fabric!!!!!!!!

Roben 06-19-2008 06:37 AM

I always seem to go for antique colors - rust, mauve, muted greens and blues. Every now and then I challenge myself - DS #1's quilt was a challenge to work with a pretty funky looking orange fabric I had collected a few fat quarters of. Then I go back to my antiques and all is well :D

tlrnhi 06-19-2008 06:55 AM

I have always loved Cobalt blue tones. Mixed with yellow and it's just yummy for me.
But, I tend to lean towards anything that calls my name and that's usually EVERYTHING! lol

Elizabeth A. 06-19-2008 06:55 AM

My personal favorite is Royal blue, and I've been collecting all shades to make a quilt for my sister, hopefully I wont hate the color when I'm done.

My Grandmother's favorite color was orange. Yes, that's what I said. So the more and more that I work with fabrics the more I notice beautiful Orange colors. But trust me whenever an orange block goes into the sewing machine I blubber and cry like a baby. I miss her very much.

Rose Marie 06-19-2008 06:57 AM

I like batiks, all colors. 1930's reproductions, and reds and greens.
Right now I am about to start the jewel box quilt and it uses jewel tone colors.
Fall colors are nice too.
Just finished a blue and white log cabin with red stars in the sashing.
So I would say I like and use most all colors.

bebe 06-19-2008 06:58 AM

I like orange very much. Plenty of it in my stash!!!!! Many on the board know blue is not my favorite but do have some in my stash!!!!!

Granny Cat 06-19-2008 07:08 AM

I am very drawn to Pink and little flowers are usually my fav...but I love fall colors alot and am always attracted to those for my quilts...they just look cozy and inviting to me...

ddrobins1956 06-19-2008 08:42 AM

I really love rich colors. Greens, reds, blues, browns, yellows, golds, tans. I like small patterns and small florals. I love plaids. I'm not much for brights and bold patterns. I like the more muted batiks, but not so much the tropical colors. I'll always love my scrappy, pioneer look quilts the best and that's what I enjoy making. Although I admire all sorts of quilts. And I also love love love fabric, all kinds.

Moonpi 06-19-2008 08:43 AM

Autumn colors draw me, but I also love greens. For some reason, my stash has gotten weighted towards medium scale prints. Once I get working again, I'll need to stock up on larger scale. I'm not shy about dyeing solids and some light prints I don't particularly like.

Bevanger 06-19-2008 08:52 AM

That's a hard question for me as I love all colors , But I guess it depends on my mood. There's days when I'm a spring person, somedays Autumn etc..

mgshaw 06-19-2008 09:22 AM

Reds and Golds (almost anything in the red family trips my trigger!!!)
1800's repro fabrics are my weakness, but other than that, I tend to buy small scale prints, so I have to really focus on trying to pick out large prints or checks or stripes, I dont know why I do that but my stash is mostly small prints and I really need more of the others!

Bill'sBonBon 06-19-2008 09:42 AM

I love the old muted colors, faded roses,Pinks,Burgandy. Blues the same.Small florals and solids. Some Greens. Plaids also. But I will take anything anyone is wanting to get rid of,to give it a new home. LOL. I am not picky, choosey about freebees. Bill'sBonBon

sewnsewer2 06-19-2008 10:15 AM

I tend to lean towards tiny florals and if I'm making a quilt for me, I like victorian colors. Otherwise, anything as long as it is a small print.

beachlady 06-19-2008 12:34 PM

I am trying to break out of muted colors and going more for brights. Like all colors, but thnk I need help putting colors together. I see so many beautiful works here and say to myself, I never would have though of that.

Marcia 06-19-2008 12:47 PM

I love it all!!! What I am drawn to when I enter a quilt shop depends a lot on what my current project is. I may be collecting black and whites, or Civil War reproductions, or Americana. When I look at my stash it is obvious that gold is always a favorite. I like muted more than brights, but they have their place too. Each quilt calls me to something different. It is fun to step out of your comfort zone and buy something completely unlike yourself sometimes.

zyxquilts 06-19-2008 01:02 PM

Blues & brights! ALL blues, from cobalt to navy to turquoise to sky. When I walk into a fabric/quilt shop....those blues call my name ;) I have been consciously avoiding them for a while now, trying to even out the stash a bit.... Here's one of my 3 cabinets, this one also has a bottom shelf full of old jeans. #2 has 2 shelves of aqua & turquoise & teals, and even in the cabinet with no blues...there's blue too! LOL But, I did deplete the blue shelves a bit by sending fabrics to Izy!! :)

I tend to lean toward Americana colors and greens. I really need to break out of my box and go for some large florals. Most of mine are muttled solid or small floral.

DreamXer 06-19-2008 02:56 PM

I like mauves, sages, plums, victorian blue, burgundy, historical muted colours and I like the forest colours - pine green, maple red, wheat, deer brown-tan, pond gray, what else do you call them?
BUT :P
when I walk into a store, I love the greens - each one of them - lime, acid greens, olive, sage, pine, forest, hunter, teal, aqua, even khaki! I love them in all prints - big, small, strips, even dots, that I usually avoid! If a fabric has green in it, I'm there! Kaffe Fassett has a line out that I wouldn't normally be drawn to, but since I love the shade of green he uses, even the pink looks good (BTB pink is not my favourite colour :? )! I just may have to pick some up! Ugh, there goes my budget!
In prints, I like chickens, asians, and mexican/southwest/cowboy!

All in all, I just love fabric! So squishy, so homey, so comfy!

sewmuch 06-19-2008 03:06 PM

Oh how I love purple shades right now, it could change soon tho.

Lucky Patsy's 06-19-2008 10:20 PM

I am drawn to cool tones of green, blue and especially purple, so my stash is heavy towards those. But I did just win the Fat Quarter Frenzy at the last guild meeting and they were all yellows, golds and oranges! That helped even out the stash and inspired me to make several log cabin pumpkin blocks!

Celeste 06-19-2008 10:31 PM

Any color that makes me think of autumn and forests. Greens. That blue and yellow quilt Catherine did, and a green and pink I saw here too!

Quilt4u 06-20-2008 02:24 AM

I love teals and blues. And what ever catches my eye.

mic-pa 06-20-2008 02:59 AM

Red is my very favorite color. I also like autumn (fall) colors as well as anything Christmas. You won't find any florals in my stash. I like geometric prints, tone on tone and theme fabrics.

PamH 06-20-2008 03:19 AM

I love an assortment---1930's repro, Americana, flowers, and my favorite is any of the primitives fabrics, oh and of course any holiday fabric.

Quiltinsolitude 06-20-2008 05:16 AM

I'm usually drawn to greens and purples - fortunately they look good together - and I love jeweltones -but a lot of times I'm doing a quilt with a particular person in mind, so I buy their favorite colors.

I did one for a young man whose favorite colors are orange (bright bright bright orange) and green (green green green green). I did a rail fence for him and teased while I was working on it that it looked like leprechaun puke - but it turned out surprisingly well and, more importantly, he loves it.

I read once that it's good to always pick a few colors that are out of one's comfort range. I don't much care for "earthtones" but I try to pick up a few now and again.

I need to go shopping on your blue shelves. lol I'm collecting fat quarters for a blue and yellow pineapple quilt I want to make. That sucker calls for something like 52 fat quarters. I'm not even close to that many!

thequiltlady08 06-20-2008 05:59 AM

I tend to gravitate towards smaller prints, old fashion looking prints - Civil War, 1800 repro's, burgandy, blue, tan, forest gree, scrappy... I do not like to do bold, bright, tropical colors but will if it's for someone else.

If it looks like it came from nature, I love it. I am always drawn to the earthy colors. When I made the "Talk-About" quilts, which were more primary in color, it was really out of my comfort zone.

Elizabeth A. 06-20-2008 10:25 AM
