Favorite go to quilt pattern

Lots of stash to use up. Do you have a favorite quilt pattern for a quilt that isn't planned for anyone particular?
Thanks. Terry

I love the Disappearing 9-patch. That seems to be my go-to pattern lately.

I tend not to make the same quilt twice. But my first 2 quilts were 9 patch w 2.5" squares. The first was all pieced by hand front and back, and quilted by hand, initially tied. The second one was alternated with 6.5" squares. The reason for 2 9 patches was an overabundance of 2.5" squares. Then I've remade quilts that were lost in a hurricane, but made them better. For baby quilts, I've added borders to enlarge a panel. I don't know if that qualifies as the same. My problem is that I like to do different things.

I actually have two go to patterns: log cabin (can be arranged in so many different ways) and a basic strip quilt, sometimes just strings, sometimes with triangular corners (forms diamonds between blocks). Both are scrappy.

I just LOVE Boxed Squares. I am currently working on my 9th one. This is one from a couple of years ago. It uses 2 1/2" pieces and can be a wonderful scrappy.

Love BQ2 quilt by Maple Islands quilt. So easy you can make it in a day. I don't care for the 18" block but using EQ, I resized it so that the blocks are an easier 13.5" block.

I second this. I can whip out a kid's size in a weekend.

I agree re Warm Wishes.

I don't have any one go-to pattern. I have ones that I love at the moment and will use a couple of times then find a new favorite, use and then see something else that catches my imagination...

Edie 02-28-2014 05:18 AM

My favorite is a Sampler - they are always different, always a new block to figure out and sew, finding out which block represents the person I am making the quilt for. Always something new, always a new quilt block to learn and know the history of (never end a sentence with a preposition).

Always exciting to see the outcome of each and every different quilt.

Always, always the Log Cabin. I absolutely love making them and the possibilities for layouts are endless as are the color combinations. Each Log Cabin is a different quilt top. Now I want to run into my sewing room and make a LOG CABIN! ;-))

mirish2 02-28-2014 06:57 AM

I like Courthouse steps and D9P. Both will allow you to make the size square you need to fit whatever size quilt that you want to make. Also, by using one consistent color for either one, even scrappy quilts look cohesive.

Here is another BQ2

Mine is also a BQ2 with the sashing all the same color and scrappy squares and rectangles

KalamaQuilts 02-28-2014 07:50 AM

In 40 years I've never made a quilt twice, but if you want to use up fabric pick something with small pieces. Big pieces barely dent a stash :)

MS quilter 02-28-2014 07:58 AM

I love Take 5. It makes up sooo fast & it is endless in arrangements a/o fabric usage! Love it!

This was a good stash-buster. But it was not quick and easy. I made it once; may do another (someday) with different colors.

It was from a magazine that is now 20 years old.

Same here....I like to keep trying new/different quilt patterns

I know that there are people who don't like making the same quilt twice, and that's cool, but when I need to throw together something quickly, I do a Turning Twenty Around the Block quilt. There are a few variations, and the fabric makes a HUGE difference - you can get vastly different looks depending on your focal. Here are a couple I've done ...

I do a Hunters star or a Lemoyne star if I'm just playing with fabric.

fangman 02-28-2014 09:31 AM

I love the Warm Wishes pattern.

JanieH 02-28-2014 11:36 AM

Log Cabin is my favorite for the same reasons others have mentioned and because I love the tradition of it!

Stitch124 02-28-2014 11:40 AM

Any pattern from Fabric Cafe.

pw6 02-28-2014 12:04 PM

depends of your fabric sizes.. there are a lot of patterns that use small pieces and trip around the world is one of them go to "quilt blocks galore" and take a look at all the FREE patterns.. good luck. I use them a lot in paper piecing as you usually need small pieces

I love strip quilts and Dresden plate. Strip quilts are faster and easier, but either will use up a lot of stash. froggyintexas

My favorite go to patterns are log cabin and strip quilts. Always satisfy my strip overload.

Jo Belmont 02-28-2014 01:36 PM

I love making tumbler blocks. Anything goes. Just make sure rows are done in uneven numbers so you can adjust to avoid getting two of the same fabric together (not the end of the world if you do, however). The easiest way I've found is to cut pieces 5" x 5" (or left-over charms), trimming the sides at an angle to equal 3" at the top and the full 5" at the bottom. If you do trim off those side pieces, alternate the wide/narrow ends and join them on the horizontal. Trim the sides and you have a ready-made border.

All kinds of variations, but I've found this the great stash-buster, and the no-brainer therapy I need from time to time.

It will all pull together with a same-color, rather solid (or small print) border. You might also want to use that fabric for an inner border before attaching the small pieces.

Try it, you'll like it!

wannaquilt1 02-28-2014 01:38 PM

I love the 10 min block. Sorry I can't include a pic but I'm posting from my iPhone.

quiltstringz 02-28-2014 02:00 PM

One of my favorites is to just make half square triangle blocks using a light and a dark. You can then arrange them into any log cabin layout.

KyKaren1949 02-28-2014 02:01 PM

It depends on how complex we're talking. For an easy, quick quilt, I usually make Yellow Brick Road or a Turning Twenty. For something slightly more complex, I go to Log Cabin quilts or an easy block like the Ohio Star, Disappearing Nine Patch, etc.

jojo47 02-28-2014 02:54 PM

Mine would be the Turning Twenty quilt. Even if one doesn't have FQ's on hand, they can be cut from what is available from one's stash...

ScrappyAZ 02-28-2014 03:18 PM

Turning Twenty! It can be totally scrappy, but I prefer to use some of the same fabric in multiple blocks to give the quilt a bit of continuity. I made an Asian Turning Twenty for my daughter and a Turning Twenty with darker, more masculine colors for my husband. You can't tell I used the same pattern for both quilts.

Wow, that is gorgeous!

icul8rg8r 02-28-2014 08:13 PM

If I need to make a quilt quickly, I make a Rag Quilt - so easy, cutting and sewing do not have to be perfect, no borders or binding necessary, and no squaring up blocks!

nancia 02-28-2014 10:45 PM

I like making tumbler quilts for children. the 30 min.quilt for lap quilts, and the turning 20 becomes 25 for a fast quilt to have on hand. there are hundreds I have saved but not made yet. I love making ohio stars and can't wait to do a bed size quilt with those.

GailG 03-01-2014 01:39 AM

6-hour quilt for kids' size and D9P.

I love your quilt but can you please tell me how you can make it in a day? Always open to suggestions.
