I'm hand-quilting my first quilt, and I discovered that one of the pieces of fabric has frayed. The quilt hasn't even been USED yet, and this fabric has frayed. Lesson learned. Only quality fabric from now on.
What are your favorite online fabric shops? What should I look for online to determine whether a fabric is quality? Is there a thread count I should look for? Any code words for people in the know? |

It's not the shop, it's the fabric manufacturer. You want to identify good brands of fabric. Having said that, Connecting Threads has their own line and it gets good reviews, and it's very affordable.

Thank you! I'm saving all these to my favorites. Some great options!

I have never gotten a bad fabric from Favorite Fabrics. The owner participates in this board , and the staff is very very nice !
Some of the very best fabrics I have have come from her store. http://favoritefabric.com/ |

connecting threads....great fabric for the price! and their essentials thread is great too.
|
www.equilter.com has good fabric too. i've ordered from them and connecting threads.com and have been very happy. :D

Love favoritefabric.com, she has a great selection and ships fast!
|
www.thousandsofbolts.com
Great site - quality fabrics and low prices! |
It is not the shop especially that I look for...it is the manufacturer as said above. If a particular site won't tell me the manufacturer, then I won't purchase (i.e. Keepsake). You cannot tell the quality by the design because there are knockoffs.
That said, shops do matter. Customer service and friendliness and reasonable shipping are what it is all about more even than price. We all have our short "go to" list, but sometimes you are looking for a certain thing and have to try others. Good way to make new friends. |
I like FavoriteFabrics.com

Connecting Threads

www.batiks.com
They have quality fabric in addition to batiks and the best customer service that I've ever seen. I order from them all of the time and if I order while the store is open, I receive a "your order has shipped" message a few hours later. I can't recommend them strongly enough. |
I like Fabrics.com- they have really good quality fabric and a great website that is easily searched. I have not bought from CT, but have heard that theirs is thinner...

Erica's is a great online fabric shop, they have quilt shop quality fabric. I go by the price of the fabric, you get what you pay for.
They pack the fabric tightly to get as much as possible in an envelope to keep the postage down. They offer a wide selection of name brand lines of fabric. There are also free patterns to print. I have found some really great patterns on the website. Erica's is in Indiana, I usually get my order here in Missouri in 3 days. The mail man stuffs the envelope in my mailbox. |
My favorite on line shop is Crafttown Fabrics, always 10% off on-line orders, 4 and 5 dollar a yard clearance fabric, always 20% off pre cuts and she ships up to 8 yards of fabric for 4.95. And the fabric is quilt shop quality.

I really try to support my local quilt store. That way I can touch and feel before I buy and see the true color. With today's economy I feel really strong about supporting all of our towns businesses. If I can get it a little cheaper at Wal Mart I would rather shop at LQS and other businesses.
Just my opinion. |
After someone else on the QB mentioned it, I looked up Quilt Kits Online and ordered fabric from them. They have gorgeous stuff and very high quality, a lot of it from England. Their sale fabrics were very reasonable.
|
I have never had a bad piece of fabric from Sew Spider.com. She also has sales going very often, and a CyberSale on Sat., at Noon, I believe.
She is in Ohio, so you would want to check the time zones. Mariah. |

Can't believe no one has mentioned "equilter.com". Not only has the fabric been consistently good, but the service is great, and, best of all has a search system that is great. The picture colors are extremely accurate! If your gs wants elephants, you can put in "elephants" and the first page will be filled with elephant prints and the following pages morph into jungles and other jungle animals and other things that may only slightly fit the theme. But, by then you've found what you want. Your search brings up small pictures and if one looks good you click on it and bring it up large. The info next to the bigger picture has all the information you need, including the size of a figure or flower or ....? in the fabric, so you know exactly what you are getting. I've been ordering from equilter for years. It can be done on-line or by phone. Highly reccomended!

I've never gotten a bad fabric (and always good service) from Hancocks of Paducah, Hawthorne Threads, Fat Quarter Shop, Equilter, Thousands of Bolts
That said, I do buy mostly at LQS and several here have online stores, but if they don't carry it I go online :) |

fabric.com
connecting threads AAA quilters supply ( beautiful backs, great customer service, charges a basic shipping charge, but, if it is less, she returns it to you |
I'm having a lot of difficulty getting my message to post so my apologies in advance if it shows up multiple times. I'm new to quilting and was just wondering if anyone knows whether any of these companies mentioned ship to Canada and if it works to be a savings financially to order from them?
|
Wow, loads of places I've never heard of. Think I'm gonna do some shopping ...
|
you confirmed my thoughts on fabric purchas. I never shop at JoAnns, or anyplace like it for fabric. I have had too many bad exp. They fade, shrink, bleed and so forth. Not worth the chance.
|
I shop online because there is not a LQS near me. I like:
Fabric.com - Free ship over $35, low prices, great customer service, fast shipping Missouri Star Quilt: Daily Deal, Great Tut's, great customer service, $5 shipping, fast shipping Hancock's Paducah: Unequaled selection, prices at retail but good sales, prompt shipping, good customer service Connecting Threads: Lower prices (their fabric), books, etc, prompt shipping, good customer service. I have ordered from others and have never had a bad experience. |
