I'm just wondering what everyone's favorite quilting book is. The one you got the most use out of, or learned so much from.

Inquiring minds want to know!

sewcrafty 03-10-2011 05:42 AM

Fons and Porter "Complete Guide to Quilting". My very first book ever purchased many years ago and still a great go to.

Annaquilts 03-10-2011 05:50 AM

The is the one that came to my mind.

The truth is I really do not have a favorite -- I just love all books.

Quilter7x 03-10-2011 06:06 AM

501 quilt blocks is my favorite book. :)

I am making the backing using pieced letters and I learned how to make all the letters in that book. How can you go wrong with a book that shows you how to make 501 quilt blocks!

Happy Treadler 03-10-2011 06:06 AM

I love that one, too, and I also love Eleanor Burn's log cabin "Quilt in a Day" books for fast projects. Any books out there that you made several projects out of?

Lobster 03-10-2011 06:06 AM

Ruth McDowell, Piecing Workshop. I learned how to piece pretty much anything from that. It's not the quickest method on the planet, but then you're not using it for traditional geometric block quilts, you're using it for art quilts and the like (made a couple of gorgeous baby quilts, for instance).

I'm doing her Day and Night quilt right now. Actually one of my friends just taught this to our quilting group and all the ladies went home with two completed blocks at the end of the Saturday workshop.

I haven't made several quilts of any of her books, but like her simplicity.

PaperPrincess 03-10-2011 06:14 AM

I can only pick one? "Big Book of Scrap Quilts", Oxmoor House. I'm happy if there is one quilt in a book that I really want to make. I have about 6 from this one that are on my list.

Boopers 03-10-2011 07:05 AM

The book "It's OK to sit on my quilt", by Mary Ellen Hopkins.

My favorite is always the next one.

Seriously, I have purchased a lot of quilting books, and the ones that were the most help when I started are not the ones I look at now. I think we all go through different phases in our quilting, and there are many books that are helpful along the way. I purchased only one Eleanor Burns book, and I was not happy with it at all. Too much about her personal life; maybe not all her books are like that, but it turned me off. I really like Judy Martin's Log Cabin book (and her other books).

Hen3rietta 03-10-2011 07:44 AM

Quilt Savvy by Diane Gaudynski.

Dianne1 03-10-2011 08:01 AM

Karen K. Stone Quilts. Her use of color and instructions it feels like she is right there talking to you.

Happy Treadler 03-10-2011 08:09 AM

Anything specifically about quilting history to 'shake things up' a bit?

501 Quilt Blocks is my hands-down favorite too. There's not much in the way of techniques, but there are LOTS of cool blocks. When I need information on techniques, either to try a new one or improve my skills, I borrow something from the library or I go online for tutorials.

dunster 03-10-2011 08:33 AM

I learned a lot about color and gained some confidence putting fabrics together from Color From the Heart by Gai Perry.

Grama Lehr 03-10-2011 08:54 AM

I keep going back to my Better Homes and Garden, Big Book of Quilting!! Love it to pieces, comes in a three ring binder, so you can add clippings, patterns or notes.

I've used this one so much it fell apart!

BJ SewKkrazzy 03-10-2011 10:44 AM

My two cents will lean towards crazy quilting, anything by Judith Baker Montano, I have all her books, DVD, Marsha Michler, and Carole Samples are others...I have every book on line that I can find about Crazy Quilting...they all offer something different and I love learning from them all...BJ

I have to admit to being a collector of books and don't necessarily have a favorite. I just love having them to leaf through on a quiet night when hubby is in bed already!

Krystyna 03-10-2011 11:54 AM

I love all of the Kaffee Fasset books. Such wonderful eye-candy that just soothes the quilter's soul!

To shake it up a bit - New Cuts for New Quilts - More Ways to Stack the Deck by Karla Alexander. Whole lot of shaking going on there!

Don't you just love her? Have you seen her on "Simply Quilts"? She is a stitch. I have her books too.

Ceil 03-10-2011 04:07 PM

Question: is the Complete Guide to Quilting the same as Quilter's Complete Guide?

That is also my favorite. I have used it for years. Everytime I look through it I see something different.

SimpleCook29 03-10-2011 04:14 PM

I love the "encyclopedia of basic quilts"

ccthomas 03-10-2011 04:23 PM

This is one I use frequently. Then I have a "quilt book that isn't very good but it was my Mom's and I would not ever get rid of this one. It is sorta like my Mom's cookbook.

Here are some recent links from this board. There are many more if you type "favorite quilting book" into the search blank. Fun to read.

Better Home and Gardens Complete Guide to Quilting, is the book I started with and still go to. I'm self taught it really helps.

I have several books, but don't know if any would be my favorite. I do get books from the local library & love so many of them. I get alot of ideas from them & the best thin is, I don't have to pay a cent for them.

Dee Dee 03-10-2011 06:12 PM

Mine too. It's my "Go To" book.
