Hi! I want to splurge and get a subscrption to a quilting magazine...but NO IDEA which one!
Could you please tell me your favorite and WHY?
Thank you in advance!

thequilterslink 04-22-2010 05:56 AM

I like American Patchwork and Quilting or McCalls quilting, they seem to have more quilts that appeal to me in them.. I would go to a bookstore that has a big variety of magazines and look them over, see what has your style of quilting in it, and subscribe to that one

erstan947 04-22-2010 05:56 AM

buy a few at the news stand and see which you like. Some of the magazines lean toward art quilts, They are beautiful but not my style.

Elly 04-22-2010 06:06 AM

I recieve 3. I am a scrap and taditional quilter.

McCalls-just because I can find at least one or more projects that appeal to me.
American Patchwork and Quilting- This is probably my favorite.
Quiltmaker- Because of Bonnie Hunters article feature each month.

Minda 04-22-2010 06:06 AM

McCalls Quilting is my very favorite.

pollyjvan9 04-22-2010 06:24 AM

If you have a library handy go there and look at the magazines they have on hand. They will have several issues of each magazine and will help you decide.

I personally LOVE Australian Patchwork and Quilting. They many scrap quilts which I love, a lot of applique, fusible or needle turned, and just really unusual quilt patterns. The magazines are expensive $10.00 per issue but I think they are well worth it!

Thats great advise and thats exactly what I did. I have to say McCalls is my favorite-very easy to read and like someone else said i can usually find a couple patterns that are realistic for me to save on my want to do list.

JudyG 04-22-2010 06:34 AM

McCalls and Quiltmaker are my favorites. I have found lots of patterns in both that I have made or on my list to make.

sharon b 04-22-2010 06:41 AM

McCalls but also like Quick Quilts and Fons and Porter. Just depends what type of quilting you like

IrishNY 04-22-2010 01:06 PM

Australian Patchwork and Quilting was my favorite when they were available. Did not realise they have gotten so expensive. I have made more quilts from the few mags of theirs then the years worth of all the others put together.

Australian Patchwork & Quilting

oksewglad 04-22-2010 03:58 PM

Am Patchwork & Quilting is mine.

nursie76 04-22-2010 04:01 PM

I like McCalls and Fons & Porter's Easy Quilts

Pamela Artman 04-22-2010 04:14 PM

I like Fons and Porter Love of Quilting. I usually like several of the quilts in each issue and I like reading the tips and the technique How-to's. I also like Quick Quilts, because the quilts are... well... QUICK!! :D

Or treat yourself to a coffee at a Barnes and Noble (or Borders) bookstore and browse their selection. Some people like lots of patterns, others prefer more stories. I'm sure the right one will stand up for you.

Shiloh 04-22-2010 04:25 PM

Another idea. Use your 40% off coupon at JoAnn's and buy a magazine (after your do a quick preview at the magazine stand). Occasionally they don't have them marked 10% off and you can use the coupon. To me, that 10% off is just another one of JoAnns moves to prevent customers from getting a good deal on something. I find that if you buy a subscription to one of the quilting magazines, they usually come out to close to what the 40% off coupon price is per issue. My favorite is American Patchwork & Quilting. I also get McCalls & Fons & Porter. Quick Quilts has some neat quilts, too. Another thing I have done is buy lots of older quilting magazines on eBay.

Oklahoma Suzie 04-22-2010 04:50 PM

I like quick quilts

You summed it up Elly...my 3 picks exactly

johnniesgirl 04-22-2010 06:39 PM

Quilters World is my favorite.

quiltluvr 04-22-2010 06:41 PM

I like Quilt magazine. I've let all my subs go, down to the last issues of Fons & Porter and Fabric Trends.

I've noticed most have gone up to 6.99 an issue now, so it is cheaper to subscribe, but it seemed I get mine after the newsstands.

debbieumphress 04-22-2010 07:32 PM

I used to Love Quilter Home and Mark left. I also Love FOns and Porter. Just got my Quilting World yesterday. I also take Quiltmaker, and McCalls.

RedGarnet222 04-22-2010 07:33 PM

McCall's is my favorite. Although I used to really enjoy the american quilting. I think it really depends the individuality of the person. There are some that are mostly country, some more this or that. Know what I mean? My next door neighbor loves the fons and porter ones for all the tips they give, not for the patterns.

canmitch1971 04-22-2010 07:33 PM

I like Fons and Porter

wvdek 04-22-2010 07:35 PM

McCall's & Quick Quilts.

stitchinwitch 04-23-2010 03:11 AM

Quiltmaker because ------------------ I just like the format of the mag and simple instruction.

grma33 04-23-2010 03:22 AM

I usualy don`t buy as very expensive in Canada but they must be hard up as a few months ago I got a 1 year for 22.00 from Mcalls and yesterday got an email for quilt quilts at a realy good deal. I luv the quick quilt mag. I`m currently working on one called paper chains I had picked up for a table runner that was in there.

jolo 04-23-2010 04:14 AM

My fav is McCalls quilting, and Quilters world. They are not expensive and Have tips and how tos in them too. Jolo

jazzy519 04-23-2010 04:40 AM

Hi mine is quiltmaker.

reginalovesfabric 04-23-2010 04:41 AM

I get Quick Quilts, which I love, Quiltmaker, due to Bonnie Hunter, and I get Quilt due to they gave me a deal a subscription for $10. I buy magazines at Walmart, especially if they have a chicken pattern that I don't have.

TexasGurl 04-23-2010 06:27 AM

Definitely browse the newstands & buy a couple that appeal most to you ... then try a subscription or two, you'll save $$

My subsc. are to Amer. P & Q, McCall's and Fons & Porter ... I've probably subscribed to every quilt mag there is over 20 years now ! I also take Quick Quilts (great for beginning quilters) - but I still like it for fun, quick quilt ideas.

JoAnn's seems to run the 10% off on mags more & more, so you can't use the coupons ... it gets harder and harder to find something to use them for !! 10% is nothing ... I just don't understand their marketing strategy AT ALL

:(

smolfsine 04-23-2010 07:46 AM

I like Quilting Art http://www.quiltingarts.com/ some of the art quilts is not me but they all have some neat ways of doing different stuff. Some of it I can use. Also I like the traditional quilting magasins. I change subscribtions between the different magasins. I tend to get tired of them and then change to another one.

JoanneS 04-23-2010 07:58 AM

I'm surprised no one has mentioned my favorite, Quilter's Newsletter or American Quilter.

LBryan13790 04-23-2010 08:06 AM

Fons & Porter "Kids Quilts" is one of my favorites. The colors are always bright and inviting.

For paperpiecing - eQuiltPatterns.com is the former Quilts with Style. You can get individual block patterns for just 99 cents.

Loralee 04-23-2010 08:10 AM

I like Fons and Porter, but all seem to vary a little from each other. I go to bookstores and check out some of there quilt magazine also as well as the grocery stores.

judithb 04-23-2010 09:26 AM

If I could only take one it would be McCalls. Most of their quilt projects are the style I enjoy most.
I also take Fons and Porter and Quilters Home. Since Mark left QH I might not renew it. I dropped the other several subscriptions last year.

They are my favorite also. I also take The Quilter Magazine. I look more for articles than quilts to make. I have found that more and more the magazines are full of ads, so have dropped a few. I can't see paying for advertisments.

bstanbro 04-23-2010 10:18 AM

I really love Quilter's World magazine, which is an online magazine. It is full of projects, and the directions are very well organized and easy to follow. I think it might even be free to subscribe(?) Here is the website. See for yourself:

As for the others, I think it depends on what kind of quilts you like. Some of the magazines are geared more toward art quilts. Most of them feature certain fabric lines and encourage you to purchase those lines or kits. I think my least favorite is Fons & Porters. But the others are all good, IMHO.
