Red Rock Threads sells Aurifil #50 for $9.50 and shipping is $5 per order. It was here in NY in 3 days!!! Also ebay has it for even less, but in limited color choices.

I am just learning so not an expert. After taking a Craftsy class I started using Superior thread in the machine and bobbin. Also use topstitch needles. I think I have tried most of the Superior threads and they are all a dream. Love them and the top stitch needles.

Aurifil 50 wt is my favorite. I get it from Red Rock. The bobbin case stays so much cleaner with that thread.

I agree that you probably need a different needle. The wrong needle size as well as wear can cause fraying. I love Aurifil thread 50 wt, and it's all I use for piecing. For machine quilting on my DSM I use Aurifil 50 wt in the bobbin and Superior Threads King Tut for the top. I do a lot of detailed fmq and I like my top thread to show more.
I buy my Aurifil from Fabric.com for $10.98 a spool and free shipping over $35, plus sales tax to some states. You can also buy it on Amazon.com. Thread will still come from Fabric.com with the same free shipping and (at least for now) you don't pay sales tax to Amazon. |
Sew fine 50 wt came with my Sweet 16.
So that is what I have been using. What else could I use with this machine? Thanks |
I like Bottom Line for the bobbin. I am a beginning quilter and the fine thread disappears on the back of the quilt to a large extent. I find it does not work as well on the top and choose a heavier thread for that.

I use Aurifil and King Tut

I have lots of favorites for piecing my quilt tops ... whenever thread and needles go on sale I buy so I can try different brands. The only fraying I had was with King Tut, but changed my needle to the correct size (it says which size needle to use right on the top or bottome of the spool) and now that I pay closer attention to the type/size of needles, no fraying! I like King Tut, Maderia, Aurifil, Connecting Threads, Robinson-Anton, Superior - again, I have different size threads and different size needles - I just make sure it matches up with the material I'm using and it works great - my machine seems to like them all.
Oh ... I had some really old Clarks all-purpose thread from my mother-in-law and grandma and my machine did NOT like it at all - kept breaking - I think it was because the thread was so old? |
I believe Ghostrider is correct. Check to see if the hole in the needle is not the culprit here. I just got a lot of Sulky on sale. I am very happy with it. I like how it shines too.

I love Auriful 50 wt and Connecting Threads Polyester - I change my needle with each project (I know not enough, but better than using a needle until it breaks as was my old method) I have used and continue to use other threads to use them up and also what is given me but the first 2 are my favs.
