favorite scissors?
 

I have a gift certificate and money from Christmas that I'd like to spend on a new pair of good scissors. Suggestions? I tried searching old posts but didn't have much luck. Thanks!

Depends on how much you want to spend. Fiskars are really good, and I also love my Ginghers.

I got a pair of heavy-duty Fiskars last year for Christmas. I am very satisfied. Extremely sharp. They were stiff when I received them so hubby oiled with WD-40.

Basically, I want something fairly lightweight. As far as price goes, am going to try to either hit a sale at Joann's or use a coupon plus Christmas money or would like to try to purchase at a local quilt shop.

All I can say is, be sure to purchase from a store where you can return them if you don't like them. I have encountered serious variations in quality with both Ginghers and Fiskars.

I ***love*** the big, soft handles and these scissors cut to the very tip. Not convinced I like the short part of the scissors so much. For small scissors, I always reach for the small Fiskars first. Both are very reliable and very comfortable, so I think it's just a matter of what I have been accustomed to.

I love mundial serrated edge. You cant feel the edge ublesss you run a fingernail over thr blade. Nice clean sharp cuts.great for grabbing fabrics.
About $17.00 red handles.

Cannot recommend Kai scissors enough. I own 5 or 6 pair and they are hands down my favorite. Much more comfortable handles than my Gingher scissors, and lighter weight. Excellent customer service - read the second link below.

Peckish do Kai scissors have rubber handles please? I have been after a pair the same as a friends for years. Still looking.They have no name on. Still looking.

Dovo scissors are expensive but of the highest quality. They never get dull because of the quality of the metal. The balance is very comfortabel. You can buy them at quilt shops.

Years ago - way back in the dark ages (30 yrs ago), I worked at JoAnn's. The Fiskars were used to cut fabric, and they were the ones that got dull the quickest. I also don't like them because the blades are thicker. I do know that Fiskars have a style that has a thinner blade now and things may have changed over the years.

I enjoy going to the big quilt shows like the International show in Cinti where there are vendors and there are samples to try in order to get the right fit. Havel was at the Cinti quilt show last April.

as is so often the case, i'm the oddball in this group.

i am completely happy with the imitation Fiskars-style scissors i can pick up for a few dollars at walmart or similar store.
i've never had a pair go dull unless i have abused them to an extent that qualifies as crazy.
if i lose them i don't get knots in my stomach.
i can buy all the sizes i need for the price of one pair of name brand scissors.

i can afford to have one pair that stays home and one in my travel kit.

in case you haven't figured it out ... i lose my scissors often.
i will not find them until i have bought another pair. LOL

My favorite are Kai scissors. They never seem to need sharpening. I also have a larger pair of Ginghers that I like.

I would go kai or ginghers, I do not like fiskars, they are not sharp enough to me, don't like the way they cut. I have all ginghers but they are not lightweight. I have heard awesome things about kai

I recently bought some Heritage Cutlery scissors from my LQS and they are FANTASTIC! They are very sharp, cut nicely all the way to the tip, nice handles, and are very lightweight. I would buy another pair in a minute. Really love these scissors. Also have a small pair of Kai that I like a lot too.

I'm another fan of Kai scissors.

I have Mundial, Gingher and Fiskars. DH has a Work Sharp Knife and Tool Sharpener - all my scissors are sharp. For comfort I prefer the Fiskars. I have large hands and the Fiskars seem to be the ones I grab most often.

What can your hands accomodate? Is there a problem with the heavier scissors? Can you actually work 'regular' scissors or do you have problems that would best be addressed by using the Fiskars type of scissors?

I don't use 'regular' scissors anymore as they are too hard for me to use.

Which will work best for you and on your budget is the question.

Another vote for either Kai or Gingher!

I love my big heavy chrome shiny Ginghers, they cut through a quilt sandwich like butter when I'm squaring up and for me there's also a sentimental aspect - they make me think of my grandmother's scissors and all the hours we spent cutting wool squares for her quilts when I was a kid. Mine were a bit stiff when I got them but they've "relaxed" with use and right now they're perfect for me.

I just recently got a pair of Kai serrated scissors (due to recommendations on this board!) and they're much lighter and the serrations keeps fabric from slipping, which is handy if you just need to do a quick snip and keep it nice and straight. I haven't tried cutting through a ton of layers with mine yet though so not sure how well they'll do cutting through a quilt sandwich. They seem like really nice scissors though - very comfortable in my hand and the movement of the blades is nice right from the start - tight but not too tight.

I don't have any arthritis (yet) so I like the heavy and substantial feel of the Ginghers but if your hands are starting to wear out or if you tend to do a LOT of cutting in one sitting, Kai is probably the better choice simply because they're so much lighter. Due to the serrations on the Kai blade, I don't think they can be sharpened though. My Ginghers...I imagine I will own these scissors the rest of my life since I know they can be sharpened...although after a year of pretty heavy use they're still super sharp so I think there's a good chance that I will wear out before they will!

I bought my Ginghers for half-off at Joann's with a coupon; I bought my Kai scissors from Amazon. I would replace both if they went missing; I am a big fan of having choices!

Edit to add - I don't like Fiskars fabric scissors, except for their little "snip" size scissors. I've worn out two pair of 8-inch Fiskars in less than a year - they have been retired to "household scissor" status and live in the kitchen drawer now.

Kai scissors hands down!

I have the large Ginghers which are still in the tin they came in. Also have the Gingher "stork" scissors. I have many pair of scissors and they are all kinds of brands. I have a hugh pair of scissors, about 12-14" long and they cut through anything. I have Karen Blakely's purple and green handled scissors. They are extremely sharp and serrated. I just use the fiskars 4" pair for just clipping threads while sewing. I have 2 pair of snips, don't know the name of them that I always use to rip out. They are very fine tipped and sharp. I'm always looking at scissors to find that elusive "better" pair... If they cut and you like them, hey, who cares what the name of them is anyway...

I have had a pair of gingers for over 30 years. Never once have I had them sharpened or damaged. They cost a little more, but well worth the price. I have also guarded them , so my husband didn't get to them. LOL

I have all sorts of cheap and expensive scissors, but my favorite that I always turn to? The $2 ones I get at Walmart. I have a pair that I've had for years and they are still as sharp as the day I bought them. I use them ONLY for fabric. Do I use my others? Sure, when I can find them. It seems I use the expensive ones, sit them down and they are lost OR the family decides they need a pair of scissors and they snatch them for whatever they want to cut. I scream at them and tell them TO NOT TOUCH MY THINGS, but my voice goes unheard. So, I just stick to my cheapo Walmart scissors and if they are taken by someone and used for something else, I'm ok. Ok, maybe not ok, but at least I'm not panicking.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my black ginghers. I have a large pair for cutting and a small pair for trimming threads. And the black ones are sooooo light. :)
