Since starting to do the Bonnie Hunter mystery three years ago, I've been looking at every pattern as a potential scrap pattern (meaning, using multiple neutrals for the neutral, multiple reds for the red, etc.).

I tend to rummage through my strip bins, and end up with strips that are raveled and no longer true to size, so I find I like patterns where you sew first, and cut second. Here is one of my favorite patterns for this. http://www.quiltsfromtheheart.org/pa...trip-block.pdf
Coin quilts are good for short strips/strings. Here are several ideas http://qacdg.org/wp/wp-content/uploa...oin-Quilts.pdf If you have long strips, check out Tula Pink's free pattern for Shoreline http://www.tulapink.com/free-patterns/ Chiclets is a good pattern for squares and a background http://www.freequiltpatterns.info/fr...-by-brandy.htm |

Baskets, flowers or hearts as an applique. It always reminds me of the lovely old southern quilts. The road to Arkansas is a lovely scrap too. I don't know what this quilt is called, but I like the setting. It could be any size, not just for children.

my two favorite patterns and my go-to leader and ender projects:
String blocks (check out Maryquilts.com for info on string quilts and lots of free patterns) postage stamp ...lots of ways to set them. I agree with Jane- Bonnie Hunter's patterns are great! |
Yep, me too! every pattern can be a scrappy by using multiple colors in the same "family of color" just like you said! Just love to do scrappy. Good luck in finding your favorite pattern. I just keep trying new ones and I have liked them all. But I guess my two favorites so far has been a string that made a star and a string that sewed into a chevron. The beauty of strings is that you don't have to worry about exact cutting, yay. Oh, I almost forgot check out Exuberant color. She as a quarter log cabin block using strings and I made that one too. It looks like it could be an art piece on a wall! Everyone that sees it loves it and it is all scrapps!

I have a sweet spot for simple squares of any size, I also like D9P very much and it's so easy! I want to do a diagonal string block quilt...never done one

Thank you all for your great ideas...also found a cool VW bus pattern on the Tula Pink site.

I don't know that I have a favorite... but I like the idea of a nine patch. Have one consistent fabric throughout all of the blocks (like black) and then go to town with scraps!

IMHO, the most impressive scrap quilts have strong changes in value, obvious lights and darks and the best patterns to show this off are log cabins or any of the LC variations (such as pineapple, courthouse steps, offset log cabin, etc).
