Judy in Ohio |
3-400$
Hey, I would totally buy one of those! |
wow i love it i saw one here for sale it was about the same condition and they wanted 500. for it
|
Great purchase. Hope you got a good deal on it.
|
OH Judy, I am so jealous ! I saw one near Logan Ohio, at a very large, multi building "flea" market. I don' t think Flea market is the right word. I considered, considered and considered. It was in working order and looks to be the twin of this !!
Yeah you ! I do wish I could have purchased that guilt free. Just too many Grandlings, children still in college. Enjoy !!! Ellen |
Well, don't keep us in suspense -- how much did you have to pay????
|
My guess is 180
|
Great buy. Does it work? Are you going to use it?
|
PROBABLY GOT IT AT A BARGAIN PRICE OF FIFTY DOLLARS AT A GARAGE OR ESTATE SALE!!!!!!
Someone did not know what they were selling!!!!! |
I have seen them sell for $300 to $400 on ebay, depending on the condition. How does it sew? I would love to have one.
Good Luck and happy sewing with it :) Margie |
$300, $00, and as much as $500.00 on ebay.
|
I always look for them at garage sales, have known people to get them for
$25 a real bargain. I would say its worth $400, they are collectable. Good find for you, Judy.  |
How's this for luck. My Dad's neighbor died, the antique dealers came and went, the kids took what they wanted and the rest went out to the street for the trashman. Dad saw a black case and brought it home.
Yup, a 1947 Singer Featherweight! I had it checked over by a Singer repairman, got a new belt and an oil job. He said it's worth about $450. And it purrs like a kitten. I had just bought the lightweight Babylock the week before, and have a 1947 Kenmore workhorse. I use the Singer and the Kenmore most of the time, even though both only do the straight stitch. You are going to LOVE your Featherweight!!!! |
Hello everybody,
I paid $160 for the featherweight. I haven't really sewed with it yet. My husband is going to tear it apart and clean it all up for me. I can't wait to use it. Judy in OHio |
I bought a Featherweight from E-Bay this year. Paid 258.00. Works great but needed a new belt and some new rubber feet for bottom as one was kind of dry rotted and caused the machine to sit unevenly. I am attempting to an attach a great link for featherweight parts. I'm not very computer savvy either so hope it works. You can get bobbins, special feet, etc. Any part needed. I really like the table space on the feather- weights. If yours has an old smell which they often do, the drip pan may need changing. If you take the bottom off, it is a dense piece of cardboard made to absorb any dripping oil. It tends to hold that old smell oder. A new one is only around $4.00.
Enjoy your little treasure. They are not only a novel machine but work very well for basic piecing. |
I have my grandmother's machine. Love the little thing. Perfect for taking to classes and "away from home sewing". I found a 1/4" foot on Ebay and ordered accessories.
This is a great place to find Featherweight "stuff".... www.april1930s.com There is one on craigslist here in my area for $425.00. |
I have a lot of "antiques" lol...maybe just old furniture ..but I love it. Sometimes they smell awful...i have found that giving them a good cleaning and then putting a new bar of soap in the drawers and leaving it...all the odor disappears. I would think it would work well with a sewing machine too(of course if it has something that needs replacing that needs to be done) but if it still has an odor try a bar of soap. It is inexpensive and works great.

Congratulations on getting such a wonderful piece of history!
I thought it might be fun for you to know when your new "baby" was born! The serial number of your Featherweight, is on the bottom of the machine, will be preceded by a two-letter code, beginning with "A" if your Featherweight was made in the USA, or an "E" if it was made in Scotland. These will help you determine what year your machine was created: AB 1926 AC 1928 AD 1934 AE 1936 AF 1938 AG 1941 AH 1948 AI 1948 AJ 1950 AK 1951 AL 1955 AM 1956 ED 1941 EE 1947 EF 1949 EG 1950 EH 1951 EJ 1953 ES 1962 EV 1964 |
Congrats on your featherweight! They are much fun and very strong little machines:))You will so enjoy!:))Here's some more information for you to read up at: http://www.planetpatchwork.com/fweight.htm also, here's some more information for you at: http://home.cfl.rr.com/featherweight/ Enjoy! Skeat

Thank you for the information and the link.
My DH just bought me the centennial model for Christmas!! :) |
I just saw one of those machines the other day at work. Someone brought it in for repairs. it is the cutest little sewing machine!!
|
ah-oh sewnsewer...you now have been bitten by the bug:))LOL
|
Looks like you will have lots of fun with that machine. Great buy!
|
Wow! You got a great deal. You'll love it. I have two - one like yours that was my grandmothers, and a slightly newer light green one that was my mother's. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them for piecing. There's a website where you can buy a DVD showing your dh how to repair anything on them and where all the oil holes, etc. are. Don't have the link on this computer (we're away for Thanksgiving and the link's on my desktop at home, not my laptop). I'll try to remember to post it when I get home. They're just wonderful machines and you really can't kill them. Dependable as all get out and the very best for portable quilting! Enjoy!
|
I would love to have that link!!!
|
here's a pdf file that is the manual for the 221 featherweight..
go to: http://www.singer-featherweight.com/...es/singfea.pdf |
Congrats, Judy, on your featherweight. I bought one several years ago and I just love it. The best thing about it is that you can do all the maintainence and repair at home. You can find all the replacements parts you need on the internet and a good manual will teach you how to do everything!
Since your machine is in good running order the factors that will determine its value are the condition of the gold leafing, the amount of "pin scratch" marks on the bed, how many original accessories/feet/book you have and the condition of your case. So, without seeing those details, it is hard to determine the exact value of your machine. I think you got a good deal, though. When I bought my machine I took a class on basic cleaning and repair. We cleaned the body of our machine with Murphy's oil soap and then used a GOOD car paste wax on it. Several coats that are buffed to a nice shine will "pretty up" your machine and help to protect it against future wear. I love mine and use it A LOT for piecing. It is my travel/class machine too. You are going to LOVE your purchase. Congrats!!!!! |
I hope you love it!!!!! It should be really great when your husband gets done with the cleanup.
I just bought a 1950 featherweight on ebay tonight for $182.50. I will be receiving a gazillion attachments along with it. I am so excited and can't hardly wait for it to get here! It will take a while because it is the weekend and it is coming to Maine all the way from Florida.

I think so. Will know better when it arrives, but the pics on the site were very clear and close so I am confident about it.
|
I paid $25 for the Mint Green one I HAD!!
My SIL picked it up for me a few weeks ago at an estate sale with all of the attachments and case. It was in immaculate condition just needed some cleaning. I traded it for a Singer Model 12 in a treadle. Billy |
Wow, great find!
|
Oma-
Congratulations on your 'new' machine. I love mine. |
Thank you all for your kind comments. And, Billy, sounds like you did a nice deal there.
|
You came out pretty good yourself. $180 is a good price for one in that nice of condition.
I came out great because I got a machine I have always wanted and its not a hand crank its in its original treadle. And the condition is about as good with slight wear of the decals. Billy |
LOVE your doggies! Thanks for the tip, when my machine arrives, if I find I need any other attachments etc. I will be sure to check there.

My mother (many years ago when we didn't know better) put a beautifully carved cabinet and featherweight operated by treadle out for the trashman. Lucky trashman!

I looked at a townhouse today that had a singer treadle in the corner of the bedroom.... Wonder if she just does not have the energy to move it if we make an offer????? ;)
