Does any one sew with the orginal feedsack? I have about 600 and love to work with them. I have done four quilts, two of them reversible and a few wall hangings. They are getting harder to find and more costly. I also have a lot of flour sacks. My husband remembers his Mother making his clothes from feed sacks.

When I was young, we still got flour and feed in those and my mother would save them. I used many to make tops and other things for myself. All I have left are a few scraps from a few. I really liked them.

We run adds in the Farmers & Consumers Market Bulletin. Usually we will buy all they have if we can get them at a low enough price. I think the most we've ever paid is $4 each.

I'd love to see some pics of the quilts you've made with them. I have 2 quilts my great-grandmother made with feed sacks - Dresden plate and a Grandmother's flower garden. I didn't know that's what they were made of until my mother told me.

What a great feedsack collection you have!!!

I have about 15 or 20 feedsacks that I purchased here and there. I also bought a charm pack with 50 different 5" squares in it. I made a pinwheel quilt out of them as a feed sack challenge with some friends. They are really fun to sew with.

I'm trying to figure out how to make my pictures smaller. They are over 1MB. Any suggestions?

My digital camera is set on the highest quality mode (for photographing genealogy documents), and I have had no problem downloading photos. It just takes longer.

That being said, if you have a photo storage or editing program on your computer, you can change the pixel size for emails.

I have some feedsacks from my grandmother, but when she died, my mother and I weren't speaking. So when mom cleaned out the house, she says she threw away a big garbage bag of feed sack material. I'm not sure I'll EVER forgive her for that one!!!

I hope I figured out how to resize the pictures. I'm not sure of the quality, but maybe you can see enough to apprecite the colors of feedsacks. Remember this fabric is over 50 years old.

My neighbor showed me a quilt that she and her sisters cut pieces for and hand sewn back when they were in their very tweens and early teens. It was done with flour and feed sacks and it is to die for!!!

Her husband remembers his mother clothing him and his brothers and sisters in feed and flour sacks all the way through high school. The colors and prints are so vibrant and colorful.

OMGsh. I remember seeing those same prints on sacks. My grandfather had a generl merchandise store and I use to sneak into the warehouse and jump on the feedsacks. (Got many bruises from falling off the sacks. :lol: ) I have looked all over the place for feedsacks. I'm always told that "they're gone." I wore feedsack shorts, shirts, and bloomers. My grandmother made her aprons and sunbonnets from the sacks also.

You ladies are so kind to acknowlege my work. Thanks, this board is better than a quilt show. Not nearly as expensive either.

Let me think about it. It's hard to decide which to let go and which to keep.

Your quilts are beautiful! I have never actually seen a flour sack. I would be interested in finding out where to get some of them as well! I LOVE the blue quilt! I have seen ones similar to it before and would love to have material like that to recreate it!

Flour sacks are smaller is size, about fat quarter size and much finer in quality. Sort of like a hanky.

They are just gorgeous! Looks like I need to start a collection. :lol:

I am amazed at the colors. I didn't realize they were so colorful.

As I remember the sacks in my grandfather's warehouse, there were large. Those must have been the feedsacks. I really don't remember the small ones.

Wow! What keepsakes! They are gorgeous.

Way back in the West Virginia hills during the depression,
my Grandma made all my clothing from feed sacks. I remember walking to Town with her, me with a washed, freshly ironed feed sack on my arm, so that we could find a
match for it. Then she would pay for that sack and an uncle would deliver it.

My favorite one that I can remember was cream with little red feathers on it. Another I remember had lovely sunflowers on them.

These feed sacks wore like iron, the colors never seemed to fade, (why don't "they" make them again?) and they came in
such pretty colors!!
