Rosie the "Ripper" 05-12-2011 01:35 PM

After seeing all the organized and clean quilting rooms I decided to stop working with my fabrics and just clean and organize. I can't stand it any longer. I am hereby swearing to you that I will not touch a project until the mess is cleaned up. This will take some time since my sewing area is in the basement., Actually, it's the whole basement, but I am determined to just do it!

Well, since I am confessing, I still have Christmas, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, and Easter decorations that have to be put back in the tubs they came out of. They are all down in the basement, too!! Do you think I will dig myself out by the 4th of July????

Now that I have laid myself and my soul out there for all to see, I had better get busy. Looks like we will be having "take out" tonight!
Wish me luck.

bluteddi 05-12-2011 01:38 PM

i'd have take out tomorrow night too... after all that work ur gonna need a day to rest.....

I clean a while and sew a while.... I don't think I could go cold turkey...

DA Mayer 05-12-2011 01:39 PM

Use a timer, set it for 15 min and then work on a project. Set it for 15 min and work on something different, you won't get bored and you will be surprised how much you get accomplished.I donated decorations I wasn't using and got my decoration shelves in the basement organized. I just have to drop the boxes at goodwill now and it is complete.

purple.lover 05-12-2011 01:41 PM

After you get it organized and cleaned, you will be surprised how much more you can get done. It does need to be done from time to time. I call it re-grouping.. It helps you to see ALL the stuff we have. Then a person can really "go to town" with the quilting...

Painiacs 05-12-2011 01:47 PM

Good luck! Can u hire a neighbor kid to help?

dakotamaid 05-12-2011 01:51 PM

You go girl!! I'm rootin' for you!:)

Fabric Galore 05-12-2011 01:57 PM

I finally had to make a rule; I will not start a new project until I put away everything from the project I just finished. I work better when I can everything. My sewing area still looks a mess to a non sewer but at least I know where everything is in all of the piles.

jljack 05-12-2011 02:19 PM

Hahahaha!!! I think we all get to this point sooner or later. Just get to it!! :-) We'll be cheering you on!

craftybear 05-12-2011 02:28 PM

we are cheering for you, you will love it when you get it all nice and organized

be sure to take before and after pictures

guilty?? I thought a 'well used' sewing room meant I was CREATING in there! I'm proud of my mess!

Treasureit 05-12-2011 02:31 PM

You will love your room when you are done! It is so much fun messing it up again.

Clean, clean and then clean some more. The feeling of self accomplishment is over whelming. You will feel so much more free from all the clutter.

DebraK 05-12-2011 02:49 PM

guilt is a waste of time. Just do what you need to do and don't sweat it.

OneMoreQuilt 05-12-2011 02:57 PM

Guilty? I read it twice as "Quilty"!!!! Good luck organizing and cleaning but I think a little clutter and mess shows your creativity. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it!) Would love to see before, during and after pictures.....maybe they'll inspire me to "attack" my studio once school's out!

hobbykat1955 05-12-2011 04:49 PM

good luck but dont expect it to stay clean for long...I must reorganize mthly...never stays clean

sueisallaboutquilts 05-12-2011 05:35 PM

I wish we could compare rooms. Mine is a disaster!!! :D:D
Good luck and please INSPIRE me!!! lol

wolph33 05-12-2011 06:02 PM

just keep plugging along, once you start it may become easier to keep going.

lalaland 05-12-2011 06:18 PM

I clean my sewing room after every project, and during a project it is an absolute disaster area so cleaning it up is no mean feat, but I actually enjoy doing it, have it down to kind of a science now.

I still have Christmas decorations in my garage to be put away. I really need to get to that.......someday. Oh, and I have a big pumpkin guy that's up all year 'round in my living room that I "decorate" for the holidays, he's still wearing the St. Patricks glasses and bow tie.

Carron 05-12-2011 07:29 PM

You can do it! You can do it! You can do it!.....

I was working on mine..then garden/yard work time came along! Mind you my room is only a 10' sq bedroom, but you get the idea!

kwhite 05-13-2011 04:26 AM

OMG jaciqltznok With my ADD I would never be able to begin. My room is bad but not that bad. My problem is that I put stuff away and then I can never find it again. I need to make a spreadsheet or something. I own so much that I have no idea where it is. That is just an awfull feeling.

thomp116 05-13-2011 04:34 AM

You'll get there! I moved into my house 1 1/2 years ago, and all the totes and boxes of fabrics, crafts, etc., got dumped in my sewing room. It took me two months, but now I have a wonderful, organized work area.

Hey don't work too hard! Do a bit at a time so it is still getting done but is not such a druge. Maybe you can talk some of your family and/or friends to help you and make it some sort of party. Have eats and drinks and fun while they are helping you get things in order. Good luck.

hairquilt 05-13-2011 05:10 AM

After being on this board a lot & seeing everyone's great sewing spaces I decided I would rearrange mine also. I first started by ironing from my buckets by color. I have found fabric I forgot I had & big yardage. I have even pulled all those thin fabrics I bought when I first started to quilt & didn't know any better, I will practice FMQ on those. I am almost ashamed by the amount of fabric I have but also happy because the price of fabric is so high! I'm using quiltville method of scraps to reduce my tubs size. This board is so great!

JusticeClan 05-13-2011 06:17 AM

I'm sure you will do just fine and think how proud you will be when it's done. I think you are lucky for having a whole basement to work in. I only have a tiny little room (but I feel lucky for it). We don't have basements in Arizona but I've often wished we did cause I'd be in there.

I am in the same fix with decorations from past holidays...glad to know I'm not alone...reading the ideas from all of you nice people about how to tackle such a monumental job is a great help!!!   Now, to drag myself away from the computer and go downstairs to my quilting basement cave and just start!!! Naomi

Melinda in Tulsa 05-13-2011 07:56 AM

I've decided I have too many machines set up. I am planning on rearranging my sewing room and put some of the machines I don't use in the closet. Then set up the ones I use frequently in a better arrangement. Then I NEED to put more shelves up in the closet and unpack the boxes of fabric that are just sitting around taking up space, and I can't find what I need. Anyone want to come help?!?

I for one will NOT hold you to this, life is too short LOL Organize if you must, but if the creative muse hits, ya just have to stop and do some quilting!

trolleystation 05-13-2011 08:53 AM

I do a version of the 15 minute timer trick. I am much happier with myself when I know I have attacked more than one thing. When I stick to simply quilting, after a while I feel guilty and it takes the fun out of the quilting. Always quilt 'guilt free'....... Today I am sorting out Xmas decorations. A quilting friends's church is having a garage sale in June. Have already taken a van full of 'stuff' there and am working on another van-ful.

trolleystation 05-13-2011 08:56 AM

jacqltznok......My Dear....Looking at your sewing room has made my day. I feel great...maybe you and I were sisters in another life.

Rosie the "Ripper" 05-13-2011 11:32 AM

I will admit to jaciquiltnok that mine doesn't look quite as BAD as yours, but at least you are "producing". By the way, this IS a compliment!
Excuse me. I have to get back to work. I just needed 10 min. to revel on the quilting board. Now I am energized again.

Oh, I'm sure you're not alone. I still have "stuff" that needs to be put away, too. And as far as getting the place cleaned up, I started -- made a very good start. Then I got frustrated because there was no more place to store things, so I quit. I'm drowning in the stuff. It's either get a larger place or throw things out. And I "can't" do either one. Woe is me. But I surely do enjoy looking at all the awesome sewing .What an inspiration!

sewingsuz 05-13-2011 06:01 PM

It seems I am cleaning up my sewing room at least once a week. Junk mail and stuff. It all gets dumped in this room on my desk and sewing table. We don't have basements in our homes in Arizona. That is most of us don't. Therefore it is very difficult. It either goes into a shed or the closets or the garage. We only have 1500 sq ft in our house so i have stay organized or it would be a disaster. Some times it is any how. Good luck on the basement. it is too easy to just put things down there. That is how I do sometimes in the garage.

Dee 05-13-2011 08:31 PM

Don't get burned out. You need to take breaks from that boring job. Need to relate with your sewing machine.
