is a fence rail just four strips and two directions? how many borders would you do? I guess i need to research this......

Jim's Gem 10-17-2011 04:11 PM

It can be more strips. As long as your strips are a long and the whole of them together is wide. I made one with 6 strips. I have seen them with 3.

Murphy 10-17-2011 04:11 PM

My first rail fence was three rails and turned in two directions.

PaperPrincess 10-17-2011 04:13 PM

It is often 3 strips, but basically it's a strip set, cut and turned 90 degrees to each other. Actually, i think it's called 'rail fence' if you do a search...

Dolphyngyrl 10-17-2011 04:13 PM

I've done one with 3 and five, I like the look of the one with three better

woody 10-17-2011 04:14 PM

I make them with what ever number works for the size blocks I am wanting to create.... I'm sure there is a "proper" and "correct" way.... but I don't follow thr rules very well..

girliegirl 10-17-2011 04:19 PM

OMG... I just did a fence rail and didn't even know it! a Christmas throw that I will post once my border is on it.

Let me look and see if I can find a picture.
Maybe this is it

Ok, I take it back, this is it but it is only 5 rails. This is my second quilt ever. I finished my first, got home, pulled the fabrics and threw this together. Some of the fabrics were cheaper fabrics and several have rotted already. Lesson learned on buying quality fabrics

girliegirl 10-17-2011 04:44 PM

WOW!

Wow, some pretty rail fences, I've done them using 3 and 4 rails. I've done them using 2 different sets of fabric strips as well, will if I can post it.

I made one comforter like for my bed with 4 rails and the blocks being 12 inches. It's my avatar, but I can't find a better picture. But they are a 2 inch border followed by a 4 inch border of material used in the quilt. I'll get a picture if it stops raining later. Good luck with yours!

I made one almost like it

watterstide 10-18-2011 04:31 AM

love the pictures! on the link..i like the wonky rail fence! so different!

just make sure, after you sew your strip set and press it, you measure it's width..and then you will cut the strip sets at that measurement..it has to be square for it to work!

it is a great first quilt!

kerrytaylor 10-18-2011 05:01 AM

Oooo! Pretty quilts, I love them all! Im just finishing my first quilt. I chose d9p for ease, I was afraid of doing something too challenging and not finishing for that reason. Im trying to figure which one is next. Have considered either log cabin or rail fence. Oh, the choices! Any thoughts? Your imput would be so appreciated.

indymta 10-18-2011 05:13 AM

I have done 2 rail fence patterns...one with 5 strips and another with 3. I added two borders to each ....don't remember the measurements but I just fold the fabric until I got the size that I think looks good for each border. Both quilts were lap size so probably something like 2 and 4 inches finished

My second quilt was a split rail fence called my neighbors fence.
It was easy and I was so proud of it....I recently had to make repairs to it for my sister and laughed at how wonky everything was and how badly I stitched in the ditch! Glad I learned a few things since then. Here's a pic

kerrytaylor 10-18-2011 05:22 AM

Ill post my d9p once finished, hopefully this week as binding is all thats left to do. My layout zigzags diagonally and I wonder if split rail will feels like "old news" though I do love it. Even considered something more challenging like dresden plate (yikes) just to change it up without getting defeated. Again, any thoughts?

Jingle 10-18-2011 05:40 AM

I made one not too long ago. I put the picture on this board, don't have the picture on work computer. Maybe do a search to see it. Lots are on here, different colors and that makes them all different and pretty.

Good morning from Canada
I was just reading your reply about Fence Rail and you made my day. I'm looking for a pattern for a breast cancer logo and fence rail pattern, but couldn't get one small enough. (Lap quilt size) I was able to get the ribbon pattern and now I have the fence rail. Now to get the dimensions and get going. I have a friend with breat cancer so want to help her feel better. Thanks so much for posting the site.

Caswews 10-18-2011 06:05 AM

so many materials- so many different ways to make quilts !LOL
My first was a 3 stripper, oldest granddaughter has it, and it was made to the book specs, but now I see so many different ways it can be made !

Rose Bagwell 10-18-2011 09:03 AM

There are different ways. I have one with 6 rails at 1 1/2' width.

[quote=girliegirl]is your avatar a pet bird ?? what is that??

Looks like a female Eclectus. Cool birds. The males are all green.

tlclifford47 10-18-2011 09:45 AM

Woody that bird is beautiful. What is it?

Slow2Sew 10-18-2011 10:11 AM

My avatar is a king size split rail pattern with six rails. There is a small inside border of a batik w/most of the rail colors in it, then a wider border of the darker, dominate rail fabric.

My husband made a rail fence (3 strips) and then set them on point...different way to lay out a traditional block. Here's a closeup of his quilt.
