I have to sew on the kitchen table so I have to clean up and put things away every day. I have a cabnet that I put everything in at the end of the day. Can't say it is always in perfectly organized shape.

grannypat7925 08-22-2011 05:44 AM

Since it is MY room, I only do the tidy up thing on demand.......like when I have too much on the table to handle cutting out more.

Nolee 08-22-2011 05:51 AM

My sewing area is in my family room so I close up the sewing table desk I just got two weeks ago (Sauder Craft table from Walmart - beautiful) to where it looks like a piece of furniture every night, but then again, I'm a neatnick. I hate the look of clutter! I'd make a lousy hoarder.

a slob by any other name is BarbaraSue! I agree with the rest of this.
My sewing "room" is the loft in my great room, so it is with the family but out of the way. Seeing it is by invitation. I rarely invite without giving the condition --it's mess, but it's my mess. I haven't even let my cleaning lady in it becuase I'd have to clean it first! I did find the end of my cutting table finally, and with some reogranizing I had a place for books and Magazines. Still trying to organize scraps, and bags we get from shop hops and quilt stores even the cloth ones. :-o

Homemother 08-22-2011 06:05 AM

Definitely part of the slob club.

I knock everything on the floor and only pick them up when there is enough to justify bending over.

My fabric is in piles until I cannot find what I'm looking for. Then I sigh, fold, and put most of it away, grudgingly.

Vacuuming? Maybe after I've tidied up because there may not be another chance for a few months........

Too many fantastic things to do keep it all in order.

CindyLou 08-22-2011 06:35 AM

My sewing room stays messy until I just can't stand it any more. Then I find it almost overwhelming and don't know where to start. Yes I am a SLOB! (in my sewing room that is)

unclefreckles 08-22-2011 06:38 AM

That is why I have a space for my sewing. Just so I can pick up where I left off without having to try and remember where that was!!

Debbie B 08-22-2011 06:51 AM

On occasion I will leave it to the next time, but for the most part I'm one of the people that tidy up.

j 08-22-2011 07:01 AM

I have a craft room for rubber stamping but I sew in the dining room and only if it is going to see company does it get cleaned up. I want to have doors put on it, so when you open the front door you cant see it. Which gives me the idea to go looking for a expandable door (can't think what you call them). Right now I am behind in some sewing so things are really a mess and perhaps if I cleaned up, I would feel better about it. - Joan

Lynneander 08-22-2011 07:01 AM

Ah, wondering if I am a true quilter. At the end of the day, I put everything away and make sure the floor is clean. Even though I have a separate seewing room for myself, I like to go into the room the next day to find everything where it should be. Crazy, I know!

ruthie 08-22-2011 07:08 AM

I clean when I feel like it, or if I think someone is going to see my sewing room. Otherwise, I just shut the door and walk away. Ahhhh the freedom of having doors on rooms.

rexie 08-22-2011 07:09 AM

Slob does not even begin to describe my sewing room.

Janquiltz 08-22-2011 07:14 AM

Just me and DH - so I don't even close the door. When It gets really, really bad - like so bad that even I can't find anything - I straighten up.

cjaye44 08-22-2011 07:14 AM

I clean up when I can't see the top of my cutting table. Occasionally if I can't get in the mood to actually sew, I'll go in the sewing room and straighten up a little. Now, that's just the "formal" sewing room...the rest of the house has little piles of clutter everywhere and I get around to that when I get around to it. Good thing I live alone  . The dog and cats are very forgiving housemates!!

doowopddbop 08-22-2011 07:31 AM

My sweet husband turned the master bedroom over to me for my studio, and now I can fit everything in, longarm machine, a couple of sewing machines, an army desk/cutting table, a desk for the computer and a bookcase for my bins of projects and thread. The fish & Tackle box he gave to me for our first Christmas 25 years ago houses notions and small spools of thread, and the window seat contains all my UFOs. It should be neat and tidy, but I've always got a ton of projects lying around in various stages. I clear a path for clients, and keep chocolate on hand to bribe my girls to come and visit! :) Otherwise, I just shut the door and enjoy my space...

maryp 08-22-2011 07:36 AM

i admit my sewing room is kinda messy. but i clean it up before i start a new project.

Same here. Sometimes I clean up during my sewing session. I never leave a mess because my kitties would have a field day.

yayaquilts 08-22-2011 07:39 AM

For years I tidied up my sewing because I sewed on my dining room table. Now I have a sewing room. I usually leave my projects laid out on my work table and shut the door (which drives my husband crazy). But leaving it out makes it easy to pick up where I left off. I try to keep it a "neat" mess, but sometimes you can't clean it up til you finish with that part of the project.

chaskaquilter 08-22-2011 07:52 AM

I live alone, so clean when I feel like it. My quilting room gets cleaned pretty good after I complete a project. Don't care how long it takes me to finish project, don't clean till it's done. I think I would like to be the person who can know where her ripper, sissors, needles, machine instruction book, pattern etc. are at all times. But I'm not and that's just the way it is.

Stitchit123 08-22-2011 08:55 AM

During a project it is a Enter at Own Risk zone but as soon as I am 100% finished the room gets a good sprucing to make it easier to start the next disaster area -opps I mean project

justme CA 08-22-2011 09:01 AM

Since I can't work in confusion so my house and workroom are usually neat unless I am in the very middle of a project . This way I keep track of each step and do a better job. But my family is grown, all grandchildren too and I'm a widow living alone with a fairly tidy cat.

I had a poster in my sewing room a long time saying, A messy room shows a creative mind. I don't think that's always so for I do a lot of creative things: I write family memoirs, paint, garden and volunteer as well as quilt.

Flying_V_Goddess 08-22-2011 09:10 AM

I'm a bit of a slob. My sewing room also has the unfortunate circumstance of also being my bedroom where I eat, sleep, sew, and play video games. Its kind of like a dorm room, but a dorm room would be so much bigger because I have the smallest bedroom in the house. I have way too much stuff to fit in this tiny room and its hard to organize. As far as my quilting stuff goes its a disaster. The fabrics in my stash are stacked neatly in my cardboard shelf (once a temporary display at work). But my rulers, the fabrics I'm currently working with, and just about everything else are all over the place. I'm looking at the pieces I cut out this week, which are stacked nicely on the paper feeder part of my printer.

MissJMac 08-22-2011 09:20 AM

As a "live alone Senior Citizen" I don't even have to close the door, and I certainly don't worry about a few scraps and threads on the floor or the table or the ironing board or the bookcase or the....... LOL
I clean when I feel like it, which is nearly as often as I should but like I said "I live alone".
Don't be so hard on yourselves ladies - life is too short. I'm 71 and have too many unfinished quilts to worry about a little dust.

mim 08-22-2011 09:20 AM

I have to clean up -- I use my dining table to cut as well as sew. My SM is a featherweight. One the otherhand -- I have a small plastic bin next to my Morris chair that holds hand sewing and quilting projects. -- That is messy and sometimes overflowing

quiltymom 08-22-2011 09:21 AM

Nope NOT alone!

Janquiltz 08-22-2011 09:45 AM

You know - after reading so many posts that sound so much alike - I feel so much better knowing that I am not in this boat alone! I am sure that I could function more efficiently if there was a place for everything, and everything was in its place...but my area is just too small for my "stuff". I press in the FR and, except for when we expect the Grandkids at Christmas, the ironing board stays up all the time. I cut fabric on the kitchen island, baste quilts on the long formal dining room table (so, of course, my long boards that I use to baste the Sharon Schamber way stay in the same area). My hand quilting and hand sewing things are next to my chair in the FR so I can (once in awhile - like Monday nights when the Closer and Risolli and Isles are on) watch TV with my DH and do handwork at the same time. At least DH does not have to complain about all the books scattered around all over the house...our middle son got me a Nook Feb 2010. I love it! LOL - PS - I do not have any quilting projects located in our master bedroom or the bathrooms - we have a very large house and I firmly believe it using it to it's almost fullest extent.

quilt gramma 08-22-2011 10:38 AM

Ok i clean up 99 per cent of the time as i do not like a mess . My friends and family call me a Organized Hoarder . I like my stuff and gaggets in place not all over the place .

LOL. I clean up after I finish a project or if I just can't find something. Otherwise I close the door.

aronel 08-22-2011 10:51 AM

I clean when I start a new quilt, until it is finished the room is a mess. If someone doesn't like it - they can clean it or shut up.

jeanneb52 08-22-2011 10:52 AM

That's why rooms have doors! My room is MY room and I pity the fool who goes in there unescorted. They may never find their way out.

GV09 08-22-2011 10:54 AM

My place of sewing, it's like my mood: cyclic!
Sometimes clean ... Sometimes there is a layer of dust!
The floor is kept clean, especially my dog that lives revolve around the workplace and do not want to get hurt.
But my desk rarely shows the glass covers and many more, even looms with the amount of things that are on it!
If you would serve ... always good for you!
Be happy and enjoy the moment! Life is short!
A hug!

lollygagging 08-22-2011 10:58 AM

If I'm in the middle of a project, things stay where they are. Towards the end of a project, things begin to return to their proper place. At the end of the project, most things are back where they belong and I vacuum, etc. before I start the next project. UNLESS, of course, I have the grand children coming. THEN everything gets put away (I sew in my spare bedroom) from curious little hands! Once they're gone, everything comes back out.

grumpy90650 08-22-2011 11:11 AM

oh gads, no way are you the only one.....i sew and sew and sew (for days!!) until i cannot find my sewing machine, then i take an afternoon and clean up, and the process starts all over....if you are considered a 'hoarder' or a 'slob' move over sister, and i will join you in that wonderful place we call SEWING!!!..... gina

Alexandra 08-22-2011 11:13 AM

I clean when I can't find my last pair of scissors (I have 15 pairs).

If I skip from one project directly into another, without cleaning, I can't find anything! My room is so small that if I don't clean up between them, you can't even walk safely in there :)

So - I think I'm both also :)

I guess I'm with you. In a 1 bdrm apt. it's keep things relatively tidy or you just might fall and break you neck. Besides, I really can't stand a mess like that. Must have taken after mom.

MadQuilter 08-22-2011 11:43 AM

I just reorganized the sewing room furniture. Now I need to get all my stuff back in it and organize it. SO far, I have found multiples of just about everything. For about 2 weeks I will have the urge to keep it clean as I go. In about 3 weeks the room will most likely be a creative disaster zone. Slob here!

Roberta 08-22-2011 11:52 AM

I clean everything when I'm finished with a project. Otherwise I'd have no room in my "studio".

Sandra in Minnesota 08-22-2011 12:07 PM

Door is closed when not in use. It gets cleaned when I have the quilt ladies over here, or when it gets so bad that I can't stand the mess anymore!
