I was able to get a basic sewing machine from walmart and a few tools for cutting and measuring. Tomorrow im going to go look at a few fabrics and start getting ideas for my first project. I saw a tutorial for a decent sized fall table runner I was watching today. I cant wait to get started!

bjnicholson 09-06-2010 07:50 PM

Sound like a good start. Watch out...quilting is addictive!! Good Luck :)

Shiloh 09-06-2010 07:50 PM

Congratulations. How exciting as you start your journey. Have fun. Gerry

kristen0112 09-06-2010 07:51 PM

congratulations on the new sewing machine. It will be fun to see your work.

Dingle 09-06-2010 07:52 PM

Good for you. I have machines from Wal-Mart and have never had a problem with them. I seem to always get Brothers. I got the newest one for $199.00. It's the SQ-9000. It's a great little machine. Which one did you get?

jemma 09-06-2010 08:00 PM

you are on your way to lots of fun --wish you sharp blades+straigh stitches

raedar63 09-06-2010 08:03 PM

That's exciting! Remember you don't always have to wait to save up for fabric, esp if you are just learning scraps are easy to come by as well as very inexpensive if you look in the right places, like button up shirts at yard sales etc.

odomjenn 09-06-2010 08:09 PM

I start my new job tomorrow and down the hall from it is a quilting shop. Hehe they have decent size variety of colors. Im going to stop and look tomorrow when I get off, hehe since my husband is in the military my job is just basically extra and something to pass the time. Hehe I know where my checks will be going. JK

Mariposa 09-06-2010 08:12 PM

Congrats !! Its a wonderful and highly addictive hobby.. Enjoy the ride !!

odomjenn 09-06-2010 10:14 PM

Its a brother lx 3125e. It has the different face plates. My first sewing machine was a brother and I really liked it, so I thaught Id go with something that I was familiar working with. I cant wait to really test it out!

sharon b 09-06-2010 10:18 PM

You mean you haven't busted it out of the box and started breaking it in yet ? LOL Can't wait to see what you come up with

That's the upgrade from the 2125i, which is a great machine, I used them in my classroom and the kids really liked them. They are great little workhorses, you should be really happy with it! Be sure and post pictures of your first project!

:D :D :D :D

sueisallaboutquilts 09-07-2010 04:56 AM

Jenn, that quilt shop down the hall from your job sounds dangerous!! hahahaha
I'm so excited for you!!! Have fun!! Lots of people here to help if you need any :D

I just returned from a visit with my single son in Arizona who surprised me when he brought out HIS sewing machine. It was a Brother 3125. He is in the Army, stationed out there in Prescott. Anyways, while I was there, I made drapes for his living room, 2 sets of bedroom curtains and a set of drapes for his sliding glass doors. That machine worked wonders!!!!! Enjoy it!

Good for you! New machine and a job near fabric? Can't get any better than that!!

champagnebubbles 09-07-2010 07:21 PM

right down from a quilt shop...I would be in trouble :)

Lucky girl!!

annette1952 09-07-2010 07:56 PM

Glad to hear you got a new machine. How exciting! I would have a problem working down the hall from a quilt store though. I wouldn't be able to pass it let alone take any money home at the end of the week!
Can't wait to see your table runner! Have Fun!

stitchinwitch 09-08-2010 05:00 AM

Have you cleaned out an entire room because you are going to NEED it when you get hooked!

steelecg 09-08-2010 06:50 AM

congratulations - have fun

HuskerQuilter 09-08-2010 09:23 AM

Not sure how many are familiar with quilterscache.com
but you can get a lot of great free quilt square patterns on there! Free patterns means more $$$ for fabric, right?

misseva 09-08-2010 10:17 AM

since your job is just "extra" and you work so close to a fabric shop - why don't you just have your employer direct deposit your check to the shop's bank account? save time. lol

sahm4605 09-08-2010 10:20 AM

like misseva just said you really should just do direct deposit of your check to the shop. that way you will have a running tab and can just shop with out thinking about it. hehe

Gerbie 09-08-2010 10:53 AM

Congrats, Texan, on your new machine. I know you will really enjoy it. Have a lot of fun and be sure and show us the results.
Looks like you moved from one Big state to one just somewhat bigger. But we can all finally accept the fact that Alaska is bigger than Tex., and a lot colder lol. Being a native Texan myself I can get by with this remark.

Debbie G. 09-08-2010 01:25 PM

Congratulations on your new machine. I have a Joanns only half amile from home, it would be very bad having a guilt shop so close to work. Enjoy your new machine and happy quilting.

JudeWill 09-08-2010 02:21 PM

How exciting! You're going to have so much fun!

JenniePenny 09-08-2010 02:25 PM

Good luck Jenn. Have fun.

sew wishful 09-08-2010 02:25 PM

Ummmm....why don't you just see if the quilt shop needs help??? Wouldn't that be a better deal? Save a step...work for material!! No direct deposit needed!! LOL!

Bubblegum0077 09-08-2010 02:29 PM

Welcome to the wonderful world of quilting. Once you start you won't be able to stop. Start with small projects and simple ones too. If you feel overwhelmed, just get on the board and ask for help. We are here all hours of the day and will help you as much as possible. Remember to post your pictures so we can see your progress. Enjoy.

newquilter10 09-08-2010 02:37 PM

Congratulations on the new sewing machine and tools. Hope you find lots of pretty fabric and have a lot of fun.

wolfkitty 09-08-2010 02:43 PM

Congratulations! Have fun, and you came to the right place!

Beginner64 09-08-2010 02:55 PM

I also have a brother SQ9000 from Walmart with the extended sewing table. Came with just about every foot that you would need and I love all of the pre-installed fancy stitches. If yours is electronically run like mine be sure not to have a magnet pin cushion nearby.

Merrilin 09-08-2010 03:15 PM

Now you'll never go back to basic sewing..QUILTING IS ADDICTING FOR SURE.

Lilrain 09-08-2010 05:15 PM

ohhhh, I see another quilt addict in the making. Have fun!

Annz 09-08-2010 05:43 PM

Oh this is exciting. I hope you enjoy every moment of quilting.
