Finally mastered flying geese - nothing can stop me now!
I had the worst time making flying geese. Just couldn't do it, nohow. Mental block. Crooked wings every time. Just looking at that smarmy Ricky Timms video where he makes an entire quilt of geese made me want to curse.
Then I got Deb Tucker's wing clipper, followed all her instructions to the letter, and yahoo! I just made EIGHTY! of the little critters and they are all spot-on perfect (well maybe except for one or two off < 1/8"). Starting with 1 4 1/2" square and four 2 1/2" squares to make 4 sets of little geese without cutting tiny triangles. Now I can do this at will, so I can face all sorts of patterns requiring them without dread. Not only can I line them up in a border, I can put them in stars. Lovely stars! I feel like I just took the training wheels off my bike and went for a ride to the park! Thanks for letting me share! :) :):p:thumbup::D |
Congratulations! It's great when something finally "clicks" isn't it

I too am loving flying geese lately! It's my favorite at the moment and I have been doing all sorts of mini quilts and now working on a couch quilt made of flying geese. I have never heard of the wing clipper and will have to check it out.
The sky's the limit with flying geese!! (pun intended) LOL |
Love those light bulb moments!
|
Gotta love those Deb Tucker rulers. Every one I have used makes things so easy.
|
congrats... can't wait to see what you create with them
|
First time I have heard of the wing tip tool. Just watched the video - have seen the method before but not the tool. Thanks for sharing.
|
The Lazy Girl Designs ruler has been a life saver for me.
|
Awesome, congrats!!
|
You're freeeeeeee! Isn't it liberating? So what's next? ;)
|
If a pattern has flying geese, I shy away from it. Me and flying geese don't do well together. I am going to check out this ruler right now. If it helped you, I bet it will help me. Thank you for posting this. I'm off to buy this ruler right this minute.

Way to go!!!

Congratulations. Mabye there's hope for me.

Your method is called the "No Waste Flying Geese" and is so fun to do. There is another way to do it also: Lay a large square down and put a smaller square on top of it. I've seen it done, and I think I have done it myself, but forgot how. Could someone help us out with the directions for this one?

Well I'm going to have to check out Deb Tucker too. Haven't tried flying geese because they are complicated and time consuming (to me) to make. If this makes it easier, then may be worth it. Thanks for the info.

I use Deb Tucker's rulers, too and LOVE them. Glad you found your wings!
|
This has been an interesting thread to read. I have learned that there are many different methods that can be used. I have been reading about Deb Tucker's ruler and Lazy girls Designs ruler and Eleanor Burns rulers and all their methods. Also I have a GO and am not having good luck doing it that way either. Probably more options are available too! I would like some advice from someone who is familiar with all of these and give their opinion on them. I don't want to buy them all and I am confused.
Thank you, Pat. |

Are we forming a support group? And is this in support of acquiring the rulers or of breaking the habit.

Congratulations on mastering flying geese. I love those "ah ha" moments when everything clicks and falls into place.
|
I go for easy. I use the one seam flying geese method. I stitch the folded edges if they are bigger then 2 inches. I won viewer's choice last year at our local quilt show with just rows of flying geese in bright yellow and white. All were made using the one seam method.
|
Congrats on your success! :)
|
Please share your finished project with us. I had the same ah-ha feeling when I semi-mastered paper piecing. Good feeling.
|
Good for you, and enjoy the fun.
|
Maviskw, I believe that method you are talking about is how Eleanor Burns does flying geese, and I like her method.
|
First I've heard of this Deb Tucker winclipper.Where would I find one?
Always such interesting information here. |

Love your enthusiasm. You are going to have great fun with them. When you learn how to put them on a curve, will you let me know so I can have you teach me?
|
I experienced this same happiness not too long ago, but I used Eleanor Burns method for the Flying geese.

I was slow so I timed out before I could add instructions for about...
For a finished 2 x 4 unit. The sky fabric is a 7 inch square and the sky fabric is a 5-1/2 square. For a 4 x 8 finished unit the sky would be an 11 inch square and the sky fabric a 9-1/2 in square. I think photo are a little out of order at the end. After the first put right sides together opposite fabrics facing each other and edges matching. The scissors show the clip area half way between the first cut units so they will press flat. And the next scissors show the 45% angles. Hope this helps. Be sure to allow for the 1/4 in on first cut for the goose point on the top. Judy in Phx, AZ |
I LOVE Deb Tucker's Rulers!!!!! If you follow her directions, you wind up with perfect blocks EVERY TIME!! Well worth every penny I paid for the set........

LOL :D I think the small square is what makes the geese. Thanks again, and thanks to all who responded with the Eleanor Burns method. |

Wow! Thanks a million Judy. Before I found the directions, I had a time figuring it out until I remembered that the second picture shows the two layers RST, with opposite fabrics touching in the corners. Now I remember what happens to the larger square.
