I'm anxious to see it finished. I really have nothing to add but I would stick with quilting thread for hand quilting. What little bit of hand quilting and sewing I've done, I really like using Thread Heaven for conditioning the thread.

I would use quilting thread also and would not 'over quilt" as quilts were not quilted to death. Make sure you preshrink the lace or it might cause the blocks to rumple and wrinkle.

I knew I would get a lot of good suggestions and none of you disappointed me! :)

I have ordered cream colored quilting thread and plan to quilt around the girls first, starting in the middle. Then I will quilt 1/8 inside the blocks. Unless I change my mind and machine meander in the sashes.

You guys are wonderful. Who knows what I will do after I finish the girls!! I have so many options. Simple is best for my lack of experience.

Thanks for the compliment on the cornerstones! That was my first attempt and I made up my own way to accomplish the look. lol Typical me.

I hand washed and color blocked the girls and the lace, thanks to earlier advice.

Thanks!

I have finished the quilt top of my 99 year old mother-in-law's SBS. Now I need quilting advise.

It has been recommended that I hand quilt so to keep the vintage look so I have been studying online different hand quilting techniques and I want your advise!

First, what thread should I use? I posted a picture showing the backing along with some Aurifil 50 weight thread in pretty colors. But I read that I should use 12 weight thread. I've also read posts about Perle cotton thread. If I could get away with using what I already have, that would be great. Suggestions?

Second, should I use a variety of colors or just stick with a white the shade of the dolls background fabric. I don't want to detract from the dolls, but it might be fun to enhance the dolls with color. I know I will get a variety of opinions, but bring them on!

Third, should I quilt around the dolls, quilt 1/4 inch inside the seams, or both?

Fourth, I posted a picture of the quilt top with the purple showing as binding. I also posted a picture of the top with just the yellow border. I have enough fabric of both the purple and the yellow for binding. Which do you like?

Side note: The 90 year old crochet lace you see has not been sewn down yet. I just laid it out like I intend to do it. I will also anchor the lace with buttons from my deceased mother's button box in the corners. This will be a family heirloom passed down to our 9 year old grandaughter when she is old enough, (maybe 90 or so, lol)

I've never done this, so I look forward to your advise.

While I'm not an expert and I know what appeals to me wouldn't appeal to all others, I am a minimalist when it comes
to quilting. I agree with the 1/4 inch around SBS 7 either 1/8 or 1/4 inch inside and a simple meander to other areas if you feel the need. Meandering does not detract from the beauty of the quilt. I think the purple binding would be gorgeous and really set off the beautiful lace edging. You have done a beautiful job!

I've never hand quilted but wanted to say your quilt is awesome! The binding is perfect!

What an heirloom, the fabrics are lovely and the colors are still so vibrant

If you want to maintain the vintage look, I'd just echo quilt each of the girls and maybe a cross hatch in the sashing and binding. I'd stick with white thread rather than color (for vintage look). I don't think there was much colored thread on white quilt 90 years ago. Love the crocheted lace.
