OMG...I told my husband at dinner tonight that I thought I was going to go buy a new iron this weekend. I told him that when I plug in the iron and turn it on I keep smelling something burning. It is a Rowenta. I am not using it again. It is not worth it! So glad you and you dh are ok and the house is ok. Thanks so much for the warning.

Sewing area, Ioning area, Embroidery area - all have their power strips for their machines and lamps. When I leave the area I hit the switch on the power strip. When the light goes out, I know all the machines in the area are off.

I JUST CHECKED TO SEE IF I HAD UNPLUGGED MY IRON. YOU SURE WERE LUCKY YOU WERE IN THE ROOM WITH THE IRON.

Another thing to remember is that as long as any appliance is plugged in (even when the switch is off) there is a certain amount of electricity trickling through. This can add up to quite a dollar amount over a year. So all small appliances, washing machines etc should be unplugged when not in use. TV's are the worst offenders, and don't forget plasmas can be a bit of a fire hazard if insufficient gap between the wall and the unit and if dust builds up. Stay safe everyone.

Thank goodness you were home and DH was able to get to it right away.
I am thinking my Rowenta needs replacing after 11 years -- it is plugged into a lighted power strip that I turn off when I leave the room. I have the machines plugged in but the power strips are on the floor -- I think I will be moving them so I can turn them off as well. I don't like unplugging because of the wear and tear on the plug (I sometimes turn off the iron 3 or 4 times a day) |
I Had the same experience with my "auto" shut off. I was ironing and the phone rang so I sit to talk on the phone. When I turned around the iron was red hot so I unplugged it. It took a few HOURS for it to cool down. I hate to think what would have happened if I had left the room. Now the iron get's unplugged when I leave the room. Sorry you had such a hard experience with this.
