Sorry for your fire but glad you're Ok and that the fire didn't spread.

Lots of good advice from members. In my sewing room I have a cheap iron that doesn't turn itself off. Found that it didn't always turn off when I turned the dial to OFF, so I unplug it now. Even so the plug is pretty warm when I pull it out of the wall socket so I don't leave it on for too long.

Will take the advice given about power strips, that they need to be on to save your machine, computer, etc. in case of a power surge, so I won't turn mine off thinking I'm still protected from a power surge.

Wouldn't any appliance have this potential if left plugged in? Why would an iron be different from, say, a toaster oven. I leave the toaster oven plugged in all the time too. Just curious.

I am glad you are safe. I do not unplug my iron. I have it on the light switch. I always shut the iron down then shut the lights off in the room. No more worrying did I shut the iron off. I always shut the lights off in our house. Hubby leaves them on all over. So a power strip and the wall switch maybe a good thing. Quality products where did they go! Luann

I always unplug iron, sewing machine, etc. when not in use. Had a toaster short out on us when it wasn't in use. Unplug that, too. Glad there was not a major house fire.

Thank you for the warning. I have a rowenta too and sometimes forget to unplug it. I'll try to be more vigilant from now on.

A friend who was a Captain in our fire department told us to always unplug all irons, including curling irons, etc.

Glad your alright and your house.
I never ever thought of an iron catching on fire. I always leave mine plug-in. But I will always unplug it now when I am not using it. Thanks for the information.

I had a Rowenta burn up this week also. I had turned it off went outside to mow. It was so close to starting on fire it was scarry. I unpluged it and could hardly pick it up to take outside. Rowenta said sorry out of warranty.
