first time echo stitching...

1 Attachment(s)
Or maybe it is called echo quilting? Anyway, I have just done my first echo stitching, and I like it! It is not nearly as hard as I thought it would be, though it is going to take more time than SID, which has been my favorite so far.

I am really feeling brave....I recently got confident enough to do half square triangles, and I just finished a chevron top made entirely of those. And now I am echo stitching that quilt. This isn't any fancy curves or following daisy petals or anything, but it is still pretty brave for me. Almost too many new things in a row for this "experienced beginner." Maybe my next quilt will be an old favorite pattern where I don't even have to think! :)

I have read here that many quilters really like echo stitching, and I can see why now.

Hmmm, wonder if I can take a picture of where I am at and you all can tell me if it looks okay. I know it is a bit primitive yet, but I can only get better at it... Okay, I took a picture, though now I realize I may be feeling good about it a bit soon. I have only done both sides of the center white stripe. But I wanted to do some as soon as I finished sandwiching it so I wouldn't lose my confidence. I will do the rest of it tomorrow.

:thumbup:Looking good!

Neesie 10-21-2013 04:10 PM

Looks great! I find it much easier than trying to stay in the ditch. My ditches tend to jump around and kick me out. :p

nannyrick 10-21-2013 04:15 PM

Great job!!! Thanks for sharing.

Jackietellijohn60 10-21-2013 04:21 PM

I love it -- that gives this beginner courage to try it on my current quilt. Thank you!!

Dina, looks real good! Keep us posted

coopah 10-21-2013 04:35 PM

Congratulations, you're on your way to a gorgeous quilt!!

AngeliaNR 10-21-2013 04:59 PM

Very nice! I think the nice clean lines of the echo stitching look perfect with the clean lines of the chevron pattern.

charsuewilson 10-21-2013 05:07 PM

I'm glad you're happy with it.

QuiltnNan 10-21-2013 05:14 PM

it looks good so far

0tis 10-21-2013 05:15 PM

I think it looks great - I love your chevron quilt - I think you are doing a great job echo quilting.

Nammie to 7 10-21-2013 05:16 PM

We all start somewhere -- and you have now graduated to echo quilting -- you are way ahead of me!!

DOTTYMO 10-21-2013 05:38 PM

Nessie is it like ditch hopping. I agree I find echoing a seam easier than Sitd. I like to use the width of a foot to keep distance away from seam.
Your work is great. Love the colours of the zigzag. Have a good day tomorrow.

Dina 10-21-2013 06:01 PM

Thanks, everyone. I can't wait to continue tomorrow. (Rather wish the hubby hadn't found a movie for us to watch...but he is one of my favorite hobbies too.)

Echo quilting is several rows of stitching going outside the seam line. I use a round foot and the when starting the next row the foot becomes my guide by placing it against the last row of stitching. Takes out the guess work of how far a
part to make the rows. There are tons of videos at google

So just doing one line on each side of a seam isn't echo quilting? Is it a variation or just something that doesn't have a name? I am just trying to learn my terms here. I saw pictures of what you are describing when I was googling to see if this is what I wanted to do with this quilt.

Oh well, it doesn't matter. I still am delighted with the way it is turning out and I am enjoying it. That is what counts, right?

Okay, what some of us are doing is called 'outline' quilting. Found this, on the web -

"A line of quilting that is stitched a uniform distance away from a fabric patch, applique piece or quilting motif. If you stopped with the first line of stitching, it is called outline quilting.

If you continue by stitching another line a uniform distance away from the first, you are now echo quilting. "

AudreyB 10-21-2013 08:16 PM

Looks good! And love your quilt!!

Thanks, Neesie, I was going to research this first thing this morning, and now I know I am doing outline quilting. Thank you!!

Thanks Neesie, I too am just learning! I appreciate the information. It turns out that I like outline stitching better than stitch-in-the-ditch, although I think stitch-in-the-ditch has a far better name!

Sneed 10-22-2013 07:26 AM

You're on your way now! Oh, the possibilities are endless.

Marsh 10-22-2013 08:17 AM

Thank you, thank you. This is all new to me. But why do echo quilting? Why would one want to quilt two lines so close to each other? Probably a stupid question but I know one of you will have a super answer:)

michelleoc 10-22-2013 08:59 AM

Dina - I think it looks great and really makes the chevrons stand out.

irishrose 10-22-2013 09:13 AM

Marsh, I echo stitch to make a feature in the quilt stand out like the appliqued flowers in my daughter's b'day quilt. I have a Warm Wishes on my design wall that may get the roses in the feature fabric echo stitched.

Marsh 10-22-2013 09:31 AM

Thank you Irishrose - that makes sense to me. I don't think echo quilting is for strip pieced quilts. I have so much to learn.

Lavada 10-23-2013 03:19 AM

Dina love your chevron and your quilting is good just keep on going

twinkie 10-23-2013 03:28 AM

Doing a good job.

bibi 10-23-2013 03:33 AM

I really like it. You are encouraging me to try it soon myself. It really looks lovely. Thanks for sharing.

jmoore 10-23-2013 03:49 AM

nice work, I have not heard of the term 'echo' before, but it looks great on your chevron quilt...

mjhaess 10-23-2013 04:09 AM

Way to go...

cowgirlquilter 10-23-2013 05:19 AM

Yay!!! Looks great!

Judith1005 10-23-2013 05:27 AM

Pretty quilt. I love all the white you used between the brights. I really like the outline quilting. I too find outline quilting easier then stitch-in-the-ditch.

I have the same problem with SID, but echo quilting was easier on me too! Git-r-done!

MargeD 10-23-2013 10:17 AM

I'd say it's looking good - keep up the good work. Nice chevron quilt.

Auntie Em 10-23-2013 11:32 AM

Okay, let me take a picture of where I am now. I have just finished the "outline stitching," as I now know it is called. I still like what I have done, but it just doesn't look as good as I thought it would. I ....hate to brag, but I will....have become really good at SID. This I am not so good at. Plus the whole thing looks wrinkled to me. I think perhaps I selected fabric that would look a bit wrinkled even if it was starch lots and lots.

I am putting it up for the evening, but here is where I am now. I lack quilting the border, and then it will be time to square it up and put on the binding. The binding will be the blue. I might use orange, but I already used every inch of my orange.

Thanks for the encouraging words....they help. I keep forgetting this is my first attempt at this outline quilting. This looks fine, and I will only get better.
