Flying geese, how do YOU make yours?

I am working on the the Pink Lemonaide quilt by Eleanor burns and it seems the entire quilt is made up of flying geese, 96 of them!!! I dicided I would do something totally out of character this time, and follow the instructions in the book exactly. Well, some of you may know that Eleanor makes her flying geese by cutting a square 9" and another 7.5", etc. etc. It seems very labor intensive to me but being one who has avoided flying geese whenever she could...I would LOVE to know opinions of the seasoned quilters out there and which method of making flying geese seems the most accurate and fastest to them. Thanks in advance for all your opinions, I really want to know this! This will not be the last time I face a flock of flying geese, and next time I want to be ready!

I made my flying geese by the Ricky Timms method called One Seam Flying Geese. I think you can Google that. I'd put a picture on but not sure how to do it in this new format. That flying geese is super easy and fun to make.

gsbuffalo 11-09-2011 05:24 AM

I use eleanor burns methods. quick and easy for me but then again I do not make many.

Nana2Sew 11-09-2011 05:44 AM

I use the Flying Geese ruler from Quilt in a Day........works for me!

gramarraine 11-09-2011 05:48 AM

Quilt in a Day method is a great method. I have her rulers and that makes it super easy. I am not sure about making them by this method if you don't have her rulers.

ditto here :)

Rose Marie 11-09-2011 06:14 AM

I have all her geese rulers and love her method for 4 geese at a time and they come out perfect.
The rulers are at Joanns so use coupons to buy them.
It is a unique method and takes just a few times to get used to doing.

luvstoquilt 11-09-2011 06:47 AM

I am reading this with interest because I am about to start a quilt with geese!

blueangel 11-09-2011 06:52 AM

If youhave the rulers they are easy.

I love these, too. It seems like they take a long time compared to some other methods, but really, I think that the time it saves to have all your geese come out the same makes this even out.

I've got a quilt in the plans that needs 100 8-pointed stars - 400 flying geese! I won't even think of doing them any other way. I like the precision and the ease too much. :D

Zephyr 11-09-2011 08:39 AM

flying geese

The Ricky Timm One seam Flying Geese doesn't require any rulers, if you are trying to save on the dollars end of your quilt.

Linda - K. 11-09-2011 08:59 AM

I used Eleanor Burns method also and have the rulers that make it quick and easy for me. I made the quilt "Bears in the Woods" and, let me tell you, you get to know her method quite well! Can't remember the number you have to make but it's a lot of them!

Taino Jan 11-09-2011 09:07 AM

Kaye Wood has a wonderful method. Watch it on youtube. www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbtEigFY0r8 Kaye does not waste material and it really is easy.

joyce888 11-09-2011 09:49 AM

OK you've jogged my memory that I bought a new ruler to make flying geese and haven't tried it yet. It's from www.PerfectCornerRuler.com and their website has a tutorial on how to use it.

roseville rose 11-09-2011 09:52 AM

I use Eleanor Burns method and rulers-every thing comes out even.

Delta 11-09-2011 09:57 AM

I make mine into a paperpiece. I don't like to put all the small pieces together but I love to paperpiece.

butterflies5518 11-09-2011 09:59 AM

I feel imitated by flying geese, but now wondering what I am missing by avoiding them. I am going to bookmark this thread for sure!

CoventryUK 11-09-2011 10:06 AM

Ricky Timms one seam method every time!!!!

irishrose 11-09-2011 10:09 AM

I am making a FG border for a quilt so I will need a lot of them. With a lot of experimenting, I found this method to be the easiest with the least waste. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOoB3...eature=related

trif 11-09-2011 10:09 AM

I actually paper piece my flying geese, some of you may think what a pain in the !@? but I enjoy paper piecing and I can adjust the size on my computer them print the papers needed.

Doreen 11-09-2011 10:35 AM

I use Ricky Tims method. You have to be very careful with the quilting, if you are doing it by machine.

Borgie3 11-09-2011 02:44 PM

I followed a super-easy flying geese pattern once but they didn't turn out the same size--my fault, I know. Just watched a video showing how to use the FG ruler--each one comes out same size. Think I'll make it my next quilt-related purchase.

cowgirlquilter 11-09-2011 02:48 PM

I have watched the Ricky Timms method at least 6 times, and am dying to try....but havent had the time yet. I just finished a quilt, so I may be able to this coming November vacation time.....

EasyPeezy 11-09-2011 03:02 PM

I prefer the second method shown here. I've done lots of flying geese this way. Fast and very accurate.

The neat thing about this method is you don't need any specialty ruler and you can
make FG any size you want.

ckcowl 11-09-2011 03:07 PM

i use Alex Anderson's method---explained in her book---Keep Quilting with Alex Anderson- a book of star sampler blocks- i had problems with flying geese blocks-and avoided them like the plague until i learned this method- now i don't mind them at all- they always come out well-and fairly quickly=
sometimes i foundation piece them-if i am doing long rows of them- that's easier - more precise if you are doing alot in a row.

EasyPeezy 11-09-2011 03:16 PM

Here's a PDF for the No Waste Method with a handy chart for those interested.

Would love for some one to do a tutorial with these rulers. I am considering them.

yayaquilts 11-09-2011 03:25 PM

I worked at El's Quilt in a Day store in San Marcos, CA for almost 6 years. Loved working there, but "retired" this year after my husband retired as "work" got in the way of our traveling!!I also avoided making flying geese El's way as I thought it to be labor intensive. Then I was at a QIAD retreat and making one of El's patterns that required flying geese. So I dove in, used her Flying Geese ruler and I have not turned back! Her method is the BEST way to make flying geese and the flying geese come out perfect every time. I have changed other patterns and used her method of making flying geese whenever I can because they are truly worth the extra work!!!

I also use EB method. If your sewing is off a little, you can correct it. Remember, you get FOUR of them with every two squares you sew together. GOOD LUCK.

And I have avoided them because, mine don't look right.

This is the way I make mine. I love quilts with flying geese and these are super easy.

Quiltaddict 11-09-2011 06:11 PM

I like the Quilt in a Day ruler for making my flying geese. I've tried other ways and hers is the most accurate for me.

BKrenning 11-09-2011 07:16 PM

I use the "no-waste method." It's easier for me than finding a special ruler in my mess--LOL.

patchsamkim 11-09-2011 07:25 PM

I do mine this way-no wasted fabric!

I just bought Deb Tuckers Wing Clipper ruler. I had seen a demo at a quilt show and thought it would be easier than El's ruler and method. There is no waste. Here is a link to a YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7WQpzknLGg

you need 96... I would make 96 HST and sew them together (remember, the HST gives you two for each square and you need 2 for each 'goose'.. so i would have a grid that would be 10 x 10 (it would make 100...fine...) or 5 x 20 or 3 x 33....whatever fit my fabric best...the size of the goose determines the size of he square... if i was going for a scrappy look, then i would just make 10 grids, each 2 x 5 and i would have 10 different fabric combos with no muss...

i prefer the seam down the middle for 2 reasons.... i like to play with the fabric colors and this makes it easier...4 pcs per goose... and i prefer the seam in the middle when the goose is larger.... the big pc in the center can look too big... anyway, after getting my grid done i use the magic square technique and i will be done sewing, cutting them apart and pressing and squaring up in front of the tv later....

Thanks for all the ideas/advice

redmadder 11-10-2011 02:33 AM

I love the rulers and Eleanor Burns method. I start making them with a quota to finish each day. They turn out perfect.

gailinva 11-10-2011 03:57 AM

I have tried many different methods, but Eleanor Burns method is the best. PP is another great method but slower.
