I agree with the quote above, but you may also want to run a piece of floss in-between the tension discs on your machine. Somes times you can get a piece of thread caught in the discs which will also throw the tension off.

You can also try different thread brands. My machine throws an absolute hissy fit when I use certain brands of thread, like gutterman and mettler.

Start out with cleaning and oil your machine .
Change needle.
wind a new bobbin.
Make sure you needle is in the up position when you thread it.
Sometimes a new needle can have a burr.

My sewing instructors have always told me that if the underside is loopy, the problem is most likely the upper thread. Try re-threading it and also taking out the bobbin to check for loose thread or lint. Good luck!

I was sewing at a quilt show and it was doing this same thing. They said they needed to change the needle. They did this and it worked fine. So, try a new needle. Hope this helps.

Absolutely. When the pressure foot is down the tension disks are tight together and the thread won't seat between them. When the pressure foot is up the tension is relaxed/the disks are "apart", that is why you can pull the threads out to cut them. <G>

As to the OP, yes it looks like a top tension problem. Unless something is really pulling the bobbin tension tight. <G>
I have had the thread slip out of the tension on top while sewing, and there are lots of other reasons. Good advice given.
