I have just learnt this myself and I have been sewing for 40 years!
Maybe it is something we do without thinking sewing clothes etc but with quilting and doing FMQ if the thread breaks you tend to leave the quilt where it is(under the pressure foot) and just re thread the machine.

Absolutely. When the pressure foot is down the tension disks are tight together and the thread won't seat between them. When the pressure foot is up the tension is relaxed/the disks are "apart", that is why you can pull the threads out to cut them. <G>

As to the OP, yes it looks like a top tension problem. Unless something is really pulling the bobbin tension tight. <G>
I have had the thread slip out of the tension on top while sewing, and there are lots of other reasons. Good advice given.

When threading the machine you need the needle in the up position this releases the tension for proper threading.
Any time your thread brakes raise the foot and rethread all the way from the top it will make a differences

All the answers I read are very good but I found one thing missing! You may need to adjust the bobbin tension which is done by the little screw in the bobbin casing. If you have done all the other things, try adjusting the bobbin tension. Kristina at www.materialgirlsfabrics.com.

this happens to me A LOT. Do everything the other fine folks here have suggested and slow down just a bit. I tend to be a fast sewer myself, have to rethread often and it is very frustrating, I know!

I get that problem when my machine or bobbin are not threaded correctly. Even though I am sure that they are! Good luck. At least it is one of the easier errors to take apart. I'd love to see the finished quilt. Looks just wonderful.

When I first began free-motion quilting, I was given a hint by an old friend who was an expert in this. I will share with you:

"Speed up your machine, and tighten your bobbin tension."

I have found that to be the answer to bobbin problems. Give it a try. The only time I have a problem with free motion is when I forget to do one of these two thing.

what kind of sewing machine do you have? i have a viking sapphire870 quilt and mine did the same thing there is a setting for stitch width safety and if it is on it will do thatso check your settings maybe that will help.
