Folded over backing for binding?

Does anyone do this rather than making a separate binding? Pros and cons?

I tried it once. Much harder to get a perfect mitred corner, but uses less fabric. Also, I'm used to being able to travel in that 1/4" space covered by the binding, or even straight off the fabric. Can't do that with self-binding. You need to treat the edge like it's just another 1/4" seam.

I've tried it, but mine was harder and didn't look as nice when finished.

It can be done but I find it more trouble then putting on a separate binding. The backing fabric pulled to the front can get wrinkles if it isn't the same size of the front.

I have don't several times. Measure and cut backing at same width all the way around.

My sister does it from time to time. I very often put something different on the back and it does not match the front, so I cut a separate piece for binding.

I've used it for tablerunner and small items......quick and easy

This is the way my MIL taught me to bind quilts and it was the only method I used for several years. It does work but care must be taken to get it straight and smooth without wrinkles and to make sure that it is even. Metered corners are possible but can be a little bulky.

I don't because it only provides a single layer of fabric along the edge. One of my earliest quilts is now at the point where the binding is showing wear and that's with double binding. Not sure a single binding would hold up in a utility quilt.
