I agree. I am hesitant to comment unless I can truly feel comfortable about what I am posting.

That's a very lovely thought!

I was just looking at the list of pictures that have been posted on the board, going to them and posting comments. Everyone of us, even the more experienced quilters, but mainly the beginners, would love comments about the pictures of our quilt projects. I have noticed on several of the pictures posted, there are around 2,000 views (or more) of the thread but only 20 or less comments posted. I would like to suggest that we take a couple of minutes to make a quick comment on these threads to offer encouragement to each other. Each comment only has to be 10 characters and could result in a "pat on the back" or a "way to go" to someone who really needed it. Just a thought from my heart that I think could make a big difference. GOD Bless

Okay, if I see a quilt I find truly stunning, I am always commenting. There are some that just aren't my taste (but that's a minority, and I'm sure they will be appreciated by someone else as taste is such a individual thing). I'm too honest to just pretend I'd like them.
However, there is the vast majority of quilts that are nicely done and generally pleasant and would merit a comment. I'd rather write something a bit more personal than "nice work" or such, and that does take more time than I usually have. Partly, I guess it's also my personality - I am in general not overly generous with compliments, but I want to better and will try to post more feedback! |
I'm guilty of just enjoying the beautiful pictures and wonderful work. Yes, I should do better and will try. If I can encourage someone then that is what the quilt board should do. You all have helped me a lot on my quilting journey. A great big thanks for that.

I try to reply to all that I can. I wrote and re-wrote 3 paragraphs to a poster last week and I kept being told my message was not long enough. It had to be at least 10 characters. I gave up. Also, I am now having to "sign in" and fill in my password again each time I get to a new site and go back. I've had no trouble doing this until about 3 months ago. I keep telling them to keep me signed in - to no avail. After a while, I gave up on that, too.

I think that is a good suggestion. I will do more commenting. Thanks

Excellent idea! We all like being acknowledged on our projects - color choices - pattern questions etc. I'm not around here very often, but when I am, I read what others are saying, have said, or suggestions provided. Some day I'll have more time to post pictures of my quilting projects!

This is the second post this year that deals with the issue of "comments" re: quilt pix. I am currently working on a quilt that incorporates several treatments that I've never done before. If it turns out as I hope it will, I had planned to post some pictures of it here. Now I'm re-thinking that; I certainly don't want anyone to be 'guilted' into making pleasant comments about anything I choose to show here.

As my previous post in response to bear-is-gray's post I ask questions when I need help. My hope is that folks will be honest and tell me where I messed up or, absolutely the best, tell me what I need to do. There are some gorgeous quilts shown on this board by some fantastic quilters. To say all are wonderful even when there is an obvious mistake? If you can't say something nice don't say anything at all is really kinder. I've made some quilts that were just plain ugly. I'd rather have the truth than be "snowed."

Many, many comments here hit home .....don't be phony, if you've nothing nice to say, don't say anything....if something has been said by someone else exactly as you would have said it, that's enough...yes, my computer makes me re-sign in every time I make a comment and go back to where I was reading, real put-off.....if I commented on everything every day I'd never get anything else done but I do enjoy the pictures, the workmanship and the talent. I post a picture when I'm asked to do so as in doing a mug rug, a round robin or a row quilt....other than that, I put so much time and energy into making a quilt I'm quite happy to just package it up and send it on it's way! For me, the fun was in doing it, meeting a challenge or making someone happy. Commenting on every picture, to me, is like promising all 400 people you graduated with that you'll always keep in touch but you don't because LIFE keeps happening.

I think that some quilters are still running a tight ship and just may NOT have the time like some of us have being retired.

>>>>>I post pictures of mine because I don't really know too many people who would really appreciate quilting. Those of us on this board know the time and care that goes into these things.
It's nice to hear you did a good job. My quilts aren't outstanding but people like them and I have fun putting them together. Quilting is supposed to be fun, right?<<<<< This is why I post pictures of finished quilts, too. Am I showing off? To be blunt, yes, the same way one shows a friend a new dress or jewelry or anything else they want to share and want some nice feedback on. And believe me, I always appreciate it. When I post pictures of something in progress, I'm looking for advice. Others see things we don't, or have ideas we haven't thought of. Even if we don't always go with the ideas, it's nice to have them to consider. That's what friends are for and that's how I see this group: friends with a common interest who will share, appreciate, advise, and, sometimes, correct and sympathize. |

Even when I go to the 'pictures' section of this quilting board, as a new quilter (still calling myself that after 4 years), I REALLY appreciate it when people describe the materials used to get the effect of the quilt they're posting. Such as pattern name, fabric type (cotton, flannel, etc.), thread used to piece, thread used to quilt (what was used on the top and bottom) batting used. I use this site to learn. As a matter of fact ALL I know about quilting is what you ladies/gents have taught me from reading all your posts and the answers you've given when I've run into difficulty. THANKS so much for your patience with we newbies. BUT answers to the above are usually what I wish I knew when I'm looking at your pictures.
Love to all of you and happy quilting, Dray from SE Oklahoma |
Same here -the software doesn't "remember" Meir keep me signed in.

I would never offer unsolicited advice on a quilt. If asked I will give an honest reply and not try to make the quilter feel better about something they should fix (or practice more on...).
I don't comment on everything I see. If a comment pops into my mind when I see a photo, I do try to post it. There are always some I don't care for so if I have nothing good to say, I say nothing. I don't expect everyone to like my quilts, either. If someone is a newer quilter and their photo doesn't have many comments, I may try to find something positive to comment on. Sometimes it's not hard at all! |
I tend to comment when I see something that hits me as stunning, beautiful etc. I read posts and view pics almost every day. When someone is asking for help, or suggestions, I rarely post, because I don't feel qualified enough to offer valid advice. I do however, love "lurking" on this board. I have learned so much from others suggestions and ideas!
