Ladies and Gentlemen: We misplace things easily because we've got soooo much on our minds that we're not paying attention to detail. I unconsciously place things every day (keys to the car more often than anything else) but eventually they turn up. I get so frustrated and tell myself I'm going to remember where I put so and so, and then goodness, I will lay something down and again I can't remember where I put it. Not old age, just overworked brain.
