Well I think I found a new passion. I took a "Crazy Quilt" class at my LQS on Monday. It used foundation piecing by the bolt by Benatrex. It was SO fun....and EASY! And the best part...everything lines up the way it should!!

I can't believe I haven't tried this before. Although I will probably do the design on paper, buy the design by the hard is rather expensive...NICE but a little expensive.

Here the patter we used and then a sample of how it turned out. Sorry for the blurry pic, took it with my phone at work. :)

jaciqltznok 01-18-2011 02:16 PM

awesome...and welcome to a NEW addiction...

go the offcie supply store, I like office depot and look for recycled newsprint in the standard printer paper size...
then go to http://www.caroldoak.com and start printing off the FREE patterns...then go
http://www.quilterscache.com and print off her FREE patterns..and then if you are really brave, go to http://www.paperpanache.com and try one of their FREE patterns!

I love to teach foundation piecing....it really opens up your world to new scrap usage and FUN!

pamkasperi 01-18-2011 02:17 PM

gollytwo 01-18-2011 02:44 PM

Benartex also has a New York Beauties foundation cloth that produces a gorgeous quilt.

Very nice, good work!!

KarenK 01-18-2011 04:37 PM

VERY NICE! I love how perfect the points are with paper piecing.

sew_it_up 01-18-2011 04:44 PM

I LOVE paper piecing. When I first learned I went a little overboard. I made a small wall hanging with sail boats. My husband thought it was great. Then I tried larger blocks and I made 3 twin size quilts for grandchildren. The blocks were hearts (a variety) with cats, airplanes, and flowers and hearts. I have since then made more complicated things. But I still love it!!

steelecg 01-19-2011 04:55 AM

nice job. I would like to try this as well

Ginnie 01-19-2011 05:09 AM

I liked to paper foundation piecing, I would make wall hangings and tablerunners for gifts. Even did a demo for the guild meeting program. Lots of fun

Ginnie

I love paper piecing too and love to teach it also. I go to Carol Doak, quilterscache sites too. It is great to use smaller pieces of fabric.

dreamgirl 01-19-2011 06:07 AM

I'm hooked too! Have an overwhelming amount of scraps and last week I was "snowed out" of home (in Atlanta) and was stuck at my daughter's home in Columbus, GA. Thankfully I had taken a sewing machine & "supplies" and a large bin of scraps. I didn't use paper piecing but a fabric foundation.

I would love to use fabric foundation, how do you print on the fabric? Thanks.

foxxigrani 01-19-2011 06:57 AM

Oh yah and where did you get those patterns I love them. Meant to ask in first post. Sorry, got excited...

tappedants 01-19-2011 07:01 AM

I am totally addicted to paper piecing. Luckily for me, I'm in the architecture field so drafting patterns is pretty easy. Plus I have a big plotter/printer so I can print up a variety of sizes up to 36"x24". I am making a quilt border right now that is using a "Circle of Geese" pattern in such a way as to end up being a wavy line. Two sides of the quilt needed blocks that were 3.5" x 7". The other two sides needed blocks that were 3.5" x 7.123". It was a cinch using AutoCAD and my plotter. If I can help someone with changing proportions on a block, just let me know.

I didn't print on the fabric but you can if you back it first with freezer paper to run through your printer. Or you could draw on it too. I just took a scrap for the center & made it 5 sided. Then started adding in a clockwise direction.

quilter64779 01-19-2011 07:09 AM

I too have taken a crazy quilt class froma friend. It turned ot really nice am now in process of making somemore. I'm using musling for a backing.

obie2 01-19-2011 07:33 AM

Great blocks.

dixiebelle162002 01-19-2011 07:37 AM

I'm a real fan of paper piecing too, and it is very addicting. Have Fun!

tlcquiltnut 01-19-2011 07:38 AM

Nice work, flying geese are real easy that way and always perfect. I was afraid of PP'ing at first buy now it is a breese....go ahead all try it. You will like it after you get used to it.

Mammalane 01-19-2011 08:12 AM

Super job! Glad I'm not the only one who got bitten by the paper piecing bug this year. Keep it up. I haunt our local library for quilting books on paper piecing. Lots of information there. Enjoy!!!

misseva 01-19-2011 10:04 AM

I do crazy quilt piecing on muslin foundation blocks. Cut the block the size you want it to be - then start with either a 3 sided or 5 sided center and just start adding strips all around (sorta like log cabin to put together) and there you have it. The sides will be ragged but you just turn the block over and rotary trim to the muslin size. Or if you have some ugly fabric you could use this for the foundation blocks or even old sheets. I use stitch in the ditch for quilting. The extra foundation material makes the quilt heavier than one without - sometimes I just put a backing on it and sometimes I use a thin batting. It's a good way to use up scraps.

eimay 01-19-2011 10:50 AM

Looks good.

cavmom 01-19-2011 03:13 PM

michael,
love it! - i am going to put this on my to do list to use up my scraps

almostfree 01-19-2011 03:16 PM

Those are great! I will have to learn how to do that!

Margie 01-19-2011 03:43 PM

I love paper piecing too.

ckcowl 01-19-2011 03:58 PM

very cool! i use cheap muslin and copy patterns onto it for foundation piecing, the new york beauty blocks are another one really cool and fun to do that way  glad to see another one hooked on a new (to them) technique :-D

miholmes---just finished the last crazy blocks for a queen size today. Didn't have a pattern. Just put on whatever and whichever. No 2 alike. I then went over each seam with a decorative stitch as you see in the old-time crazy quilts. Am sashing with black. Makes each block really stand out. It is fun, but with all the extra stitching it does get a bit boring. Now to finish it. Good luck with yours. I like that pattern??? though. I have one similar from an old magazing. Have fun. Marge

Where did you take your class? West Side Sewing?

wraez 01-19-2011 04:42 PM

Wow, your blocks look awesome!

You can also do paper/foundation piecing without sewing thru the paper, that is the way I prefer.

I also like to use inexpensive muslin (think Joanns .99yd with additional 50% off) to use for foundation string quilts, OR some ugly fabric that I have with no desire to make a quilt out of it, I turn it to the lighter, wrong side and use it so the color/pattern won't show thru to the side that has light fabrics on top. I hate ripping off the paper, so I prefer fabric foundations.

warm quilt hugs, sue in CA

moonwolf47 01-19-2011 04:59 PM

Great job on the blocks. Paper piecing can be addictive once one grasps the idea of it.

Glenn 01-19-2011 05:01 PM

Michael, I have used this method and I think it is great. Your block is wonderful. I make victorian crazy lap quilt this way and use embroidery to accent the seams. Glenn :)

Lady Jane 01-19-2011 05:14 PM

You should see a whole quilt done in paper piecing, can't wait to see yours.
