The slider is a very slick sheet that is put on the bed of the sewing machine it allows the quilt to glide easily over the bed surface of the machine, there is a small hole which the needle passes through, it covers the feed dogs which must be lowered or covered with a plate. These are usually about 12 by 10, (can't remember the exact size) and can be trimmed to fit the bed of the machine if the machine bed is smaller. The slider has a bottom which tends to adhere to the machine bed without tape etc. The silicone mats for the ovens apparently need to be taped down but are larger, but I don't know how well they compare to the real thing. I have a supreme slider and think it works well. :-D

Here is the original Supreme Slider. I just made mine out of non stick ovenliner, which is very slick,. Hope this explains it better than I did. Enjoy.

This is very slick too!! and twice as big.

Sorry and I hate to sound stupid but I've not heard of the slider before and that may be because I've not done my own quilting. However, am going to try to do my own because it's too expensive to send the quilts out. Anyway, I don't quite understand how you are using this---does it go under the quilt to help slide it along or what? Can you explain for me. Thanks much
Donna

Yes, It goes on the bed of the machine. The slick surface helps when you move the quilt while you are FMQ. I injured my hand again so I have not been able to use it. Hopefully soon.

Thank you, I had surgery on hand in May . It takes a little over a year to heal and I fell on it a couple of weeks ago and now I am in a splint again until it is better. Darn. Always something!!

I kept mine large as I have a machine table that lowers my machine. If I find that is is to large I will split in two. I then put the rubberized shelf line on the outside of the slider and around the needle hole, on the bottom side of slider to keep from moving. I have a lap quilt almost ready to FMQ, so I am excited to use it. The price was $19.99, and I had a $5.00 off coupon. The Supreme slider sells for around $30.00 plus shipping. The SewSlip sells for about $27.00 plus shipping and they are half the size.

Just a day earlier and I could have saved enough to buy some more material....darn it!!!

I tried all day yesterday to free motion - every time I adjusted the tension, my underside (bobbin thread) got all jammed up. What am I doing wrong...I am very distressed..
need help, I have watched the tutes on free motion and they look so easy, but I get all messed up. Anyone have a solution?

Maybe you are stitching too long in one place. Try moving the fabric faster with less speed on the needle. Let us know!

You may need to tighten the upper tension, other than that its a combination of moving the quilt and the speed you are running the machine. You have to strike a balance. The free motion slider does help the quilt move more easily on the bed of the machine, but mostly its just finding the right combination of machine speed and your movements. :-)

You are so right about helping you FMQ, What it is intended for is to let you move the quilt a little easier.

featherweight: thank you for sharing your great idea.

Would you consider posting a photo of your avatar? It's so unique, I'd love to see the whole thing.

Clear plastic, sold by the yard, is very slick & as large as you want.
Works for me.

Thank you for your compliment. The quilt is called "Radiating Diamonds. A friend of mine designed the pattern. It is one of my favorite quilts to make. Thanks, Beth

We quilters are quite resourceful aren't we.

The mdf and plexiglass can be filed and sanded around the edges to make them smooth so that they are not rough.
Thanks for sharing your project. I've been wanting to make a sewing extension table for my portable machine.

Do you have pictures you could share?

Another oven liner user here, works great for me.

carole315 09-03-2012 06:48 PM

I bought the very same oven liner today at bed bath and beyond had a 20 percent coupon and am so happy I bought it. It works great. I kept mine in one piece. Placed it just to the left of the needle. I also have the supreme slider which works great but is small and I accidentally was pulling it away from my machine when it tore because I did not see the bobbin thread was pulling away from the needle hole. I taped the cut but it is very fragile now. The oven liner is much stronger and pliable and the price is right. Thanks to the people who give these fantastic tips on The Quilting Board.

carolaug 10-23-2012 01:18 AM

This sounds like a great idea...has anyone else used this?? does it work as good as the slider...I just may have to run out at lunch and get one. Love the size of it.

batikmystique 10-23-2012 06:43 AM

I actually bought the same product for my oven. Never dawned on me to use it as you have done. Back to the store with my next coupon. Thanks so much for sharing your creativity!
