Hi all you Aussies...I'm on the Gold Coast and wondering where I can get freezer paper that I see folks often use. The Woollies and Coles here (that I've checked) only have the plastic freezer sheets.
Thanks :)
Janice

I know some quilt shops sell it (quite expensive though). I don't know of any supermarket that has it, I didn't even have a clue it existed 'til I started quilting.

I don't use it myself, but have thought about trying wax paper, but haven't got around to experimenting.

amma 10-21-2010 04:43 PM

What do your butcher shops use to wrap meat? Do they use the paper with a waxy side to it?
If so, that is probably the same freezer wrap that we are using for quilting. :D:D:D

bearisgray 10-21-2010 04:47 PM

Actually, freezer paper and wax(ed) paper are not the same thing.

Freezer paper has sort of a plastic coating on one side.

Wax paper has wax.

They are not interchangeable.

miss_ticky2 10-21-2010 04:53 PM

Thanks...the butchers here mainly use plastic bags. But I do know the paper you are referring to. And yes, I had read that waxed paper and freezer paper weren't the same thing. Oh well..I might check out a quilt shop some time and see how much it is.

miss_ticky2 10-21-2010 04:56 PM

Goodness..just googled..can get it online for about $16 or more. Is kind of expensive

tweetee 10-21-2010 05:12 PM

I have seen it in Spotlight

Freezer paper can be peeled off and used again & again. Check some of your big grocery stores or (is it still there?) Walton's.

I'm bookmarking this to see how much it would cost to mail some to you. Doesn't need to be on a roll. I'll get back to you.

You could always have some US/Canada friends write their letters to you on Freezer paper! Good luck.
Could you Google "plastic coated" kitchen paper?

I just love all this "Aussie" talk! It reminds me of when we were kids and went to Canada for vacations every year. Us kids were saying "eh?" for weeks after we got back!

The same folks who make Reynolds Wrap and Reynolds (tin) foil here, make freezer paper on the roll. One box will likely last you for years, split the cost with a friend!

I was going to suggest butcher paper. I think they are similar, if not the same. We just don't have butchers much here any more.

woody 10-21-2010 09:20 PM

my LQS sells it.

This company also sells it for $9.99 a box, you could try them, they are in Australia

Aussie Quilter 10-22-2010 02:46 AM

Supermarkets don't stock it. Most quilt shops do - but it is about $17.95 for a box. It is 16 2/3 yards x 18". I bought a box over 10 years ago and I still haven't used half the roll.

Expensive, but it lasts a L-O-N-G time.

Butchers over here - if they use paper at all - use butchers paper - like the paper you get in kids cheap scrapbooks. Most use plastic bags.

Hi All I am an Aussie and have no idea what Freezer paper is used for when quilting - can someone educate me a little please

Mrs B 10-22-2010 03:12 AM

Our local Foodland wraps deli meat and cheese in what looks like freezer paper. I have kept the clean outer sheets so I can experiment and see if it sticks to fabric when ironed, but have not had time to do it as yet. I will let you know when I try it tomorrow.

Use freezer paper for applique, paper pieciing, just google and I'm sure you will see many other uses as well.

stitchinwitch 10-22-2010 03:40 AM

If you are friendly with your meat dept, buy a roast or something and ask them to throw in an extra piece of paper Im sure they will accomodate you. Good luck

stitchinwitch 10-22-2010 03:41 AM

Remember - you can NOT expect wax paper to iron on your fabric.

nab 10-22-2010 05:19 AM

Here in Montana we buy it at WalMart. Of course with our hunting and fishing people use it all the time. When I go to Costco and buy a large package of meat I rap it in freezer paper in smaller quantities. It will keep it from being freezer burned. I love it for quilting because you can use it more than once. Have you tried on line?

arnana 10-22-2010 05:21 AM

Check out the paint department of your local Lowe's or Home Depot. They have rolls of paper that you cover windows and so forth with. It is not white but works well. It is also very reasonable.

goodluna 10-22-2010 05:47 AM

I got mine at walmart, Do you even have those in there

michlowe 10-22-2010 05:50 AM

Did you know that you can use the wrapper that photocopy paper reams come in. My co workers save it for me every time they replace the paper in the printers and photocopiers. It works great!

MomL 10-22-2010 06:15 AM

I tried the wax paper.......Disaster!!!! The wax melts when you iron it to the back of your fabric and it is awful. Thankfully I tried it on a small piece of fabric. MomL

Wow. I did not know that. I just unwrapped a ream of paper to check it out. Will the printing on the wrapper bleed through on my project? We go through lots of paper here in my office and I will start saving the wrapper. I will add the wrapper to my stash and have my explanation ready for the inevitable questions about hoarding. Thanks for the information.

kellen46 10-22-2010 07:42 AM

The idea of freezer or butcher paper is that one side can be ironed onto fabric, lifted and reused with out muss or fuss. So it can be used for many things, pattern paper for applique, stenciling, and many other things. I use it for stenciling patterns on canvas bags with fabric paint. It works a treat. Try this for hand applique, iron design piece cut minus the fabric turn over allowance, cut out piece with the sewing turn over allowance. with a hot iron press turn over allowance to the paper side. remove paper. You will have a sharp crease already folded into the piece ready for stitching down. It makes needle turn so much easier.
If you can't find freezer paper, look for a butcher who still wraps meat by hand and ask him to share his stash.

Looks like $9.99 is a reasonable price. A couple of us were going to send some, but that would be cheaper. Safeway doesn't have it there, huh? So great for doing paper piecing where you sew beside a fold and not thru the paper. Really is a treat! This one was done that way.

Reynolds Freezer paper is sold in quilting shops here in WA but can be bought online from Punchwithjudy.com if you're too far from shops

fraserblack 10-22-2010 02:38 PM

I buy mine from eBay. You can get Reynolds Freezer paper by the roll and it's much cheaper than buying it at your local quilt shop. Don't bother with Coles or Woolies; you wont find it there.

elsieirene 10-22-2010 03:21 PM

I got mine in a hardware store. Or a meat market that cut's meat for hunters or just a regular meat market. Also go on Google and ask.

Good Luck

Most of the specialty quilt shops are starting to stock the stuff these days. However, it is like most stuff here - not as cheap as I would like. We don't have a Spotlight or Lindcraft in our area, but maybe you could try them first.
I do know, that if you work in a school or an office, you could use the paper that photo - copy paper is wrapped in (i.e. the outside cover) It works in the same way as the freezer paper. That is what I used for many years, as there is a plastic sort of side to the inside of the wrapper. Try it on scrap material first, to make sure it works for you.

In Australia, these places use what is called newsprint paper. It is the unprinted newspaper quality paper that is often used for jotters or scrapbooks, so is an entirely different product. We don't have the same freezer paper in the supermarkets, but there are two sewing and home furnishing chains called Spotlight and Lindcraft that supply these sorts of things.

skydiver70 10-22-2010 04:54 PM

I get my freezer paper at our local grocery store. I bought a 75 sq. ft. roll. It's Reynolds Freezer paper. The size is 16-2/3 yds. x 18 in. The address on the box is: Reynolds Wrap Kitchens, P.O. Box 85583, Richmond, VA 23285-5583. Phone number: (804) 281-4630 It even tells how to use it for Quilting Applique on the inside flap.

This appears to be a good price on the surface, however, once the postage and handling are added on from Melbourne to Queensland, it looks like it would end up costing about $20 by snail mail and another $5.00 extra for express...I think I will stick to the photocopy wrapper until Cosco comes to NSW...

Jackie R 10-22-2010 05:46 PM

I bought mine at the grocery store in the department with the wax paper and plastic bags.
