Freezer Paper-hard to find in Canada?
 

It's not that I'm going waaaaaay out of my way to look for freezer paper, but where I live, it is no where to be found! When I'm out & about, I check for it in stores where I think I might find it. Gee whiz, is it really that hard to find? I thought I might give it a whirl since, (obviously because I don't currently own any!), I've never tried it.
I will be heading over to the USA next Thursday, so I will definitely scope out some stores for it, so if anyone has the "inside scoop" exactly where, do let me know!

It is sold in the grocery stores, right near the aluminum foil and the plastic wrap! Should be easy to find... and very cheap. Did you check your grocery store?

It's hard to find here in Australia too, $18 a box from my LQS ouch :( I was hoping Costco would carry it, but unfortunately not.

hopetoquilt.....yes, that is where I check. I'm sure I'll be more successful when we visit the US next week. There's one grocery store chain in my city that I don't shop at but next time I'm near it, I'll stop in. Hah, dollars to donuts, that's where I'll find it!

Go to your local butcher shop or some sort of meat shop that prepares meat for the freezer - they usually wrap the meat in white freezer paper. HTH

i was looking for it in Walmart and asked a clerk for help - it was on the very bottom shelf. guess it's not popular enough to be eye level :)

If it's any help, the brand I buy is Reynolds Freezer Paper and it comes in a couple of different sizes in a blue box.

You can check with a butcher to see what they use to wrap meats; however, if one side of the paper is not waxy, it is not freezer paper. The waxy side is what adheres to fabric when you iron it.

It's almost impossible to find in the UK too - I did come across some recently, but it's the first time I've ever seen it here. It wasn't described as freezer paper - I think it said it was waxed food wrap, or something like that. You can also use the waxed paper that photocopy paper sometimes comes in. I have a huge roll of Reynolds freezer paper that a saintly friend carried over here from the US for me! You can also get it at the bigger quilt shows.

Anne, you will find it at your local quilt shop on Abbeydale Road!! Also Hobbycraft stock it!!

Once in a blue moon, I can find it at the Independent Grocery Store, but usually I get mine at Canadian Tire. I know that seems weird, but, I can't find it any where else. I don't remember ever finding it at WalMart here. When I do find it...I usually get 3-4 boxes, so it will last awhile.

Why not try a completely different method of applique, which doesn't call for freezer paper (sold only in quilt shops here). I've just posted a thread in the tutorials section

If all else fails, go to a local butcher shop and ask them where you can purchase the paper they wrap meat in. It may be a bit lighter than freezer paper, but it's along the same line.

Ladies (and gents), freezer paper is not an oddity. Perhaps outside of the US it's called by another name. I can't image what your local butchershops use for wrapping meat if not some variety of OUR freezer paper.

it is not always easy to find here either! not ALL Walmarts carry it any more...only one grocery store here in my town has it, and this is a rural farming area!

Anytime I've bought freezer paper, it's just been in the regular grocery stores, shelved along with the waxed paper, foil etc. Just keep looking .... and my favourite all time solution ... ASK! Sometimes they put some things in the most illogical locations.

I've used it, but not been "excited" over it! I iron it on ... but it just doesn't stay put for long, so I've been wondering if our freezer paper doesn't have as much wax on it as what the USA Quilters get?

Love using freezer paper. I don't applique but use it to trace doll clothes patterns then just iron to the fabric. Don't have to deal with pins on small pieces.

Beginning to use it in quilting. Trace the shape, cut out, and iron it on to the fabric and sew around.

The most used US brand (Reynolds) doesn't use wax as a coating, it uses PVC. I personally would not use our freezer paper to wrap food.

I remember the good old days when "wax paper" was WAX paper.

Only in US is it call 'Freezer Paper'. I just can't remember the name of it in the other countries. It is called some type of 'wrapping' paper.... sorry, I can't remember the name....

Except it still IS wax paper. Wax paper and freezer paper are two different things. And parchment paper, too. You can't substitute wax paper for parchment!

I got mine from Home Hardware. If you can't find it, ask them and they will special order it for you.

I just bought Freezer Paper at Walmart. It wasn't with the aluminum foil and plastic wrap..but down from that a little way and on the bottom shelf. I paid $5 for 150 sq.ft. of the stuff and made my first quilt label with it yesterday!

Freezer paper is readily available in Edmonton - grocery stores, Costco, Walmart.

The great thing about freezer paper is that the shiny coating will stick to fabric when you iron it. So, I use it for pattern pieces in garment sewing: I copy the pattern onto freezer paper, then iron the freezer paper onto the fabric. I don't have to pin the fabric when I cut it out, and the freezer paper lasts longer than tissue.

I also use freezer paper for templates when appliqueing. I cut out 2 mirror-image templates from the freezer paper and glue them together so the shiny sides are out. Then iron the templates onto the fabrics, cut the pieces out (don't forget to add 1/4" seam allowance), and with an iron and a little bit of starch, prepare the applique by applying a small amount of starch on the fabric, fold over the seam allowance and press it onto the back of the freezer paper template. The freezer paper on the back will hold onto the fabric until it is set by the iron and starch.

I have a box of parchment paper in my sewing room also; I use it as a pressing sheet for applique (freezer paper won't stick to it) and it protects my iron and board from fusible web.

What brand is it? I've read in the past that brands other than Reynolds may not work as well.

I had that experience recently as well. I did finally find some, at the Zehr's grocery chain. Do you have one of those in your area?

Just go to any large grocery store in the states and you will find the freezer paper. That is so funny, I just bought a roll Monday for $3.53.

The last time I bought it was in Metro, in the waxed paper and foil aisle.

Well yes, but wax paper used to be used for "freezer" and "butcher" paper. It was the only thing available. These days I can't find real wax paper. Mom always had it in the house.

If you are going into Clayton or Alexander Bay they both have a Big M super market and they do sell freezer paper

I've only ever seen freezer paper at Safeway here, and I've looked all over the place. They have wax paper and parchment paper, but no freezer paper. When I ask, they think I'm looking for either wax or parchment.

I've had trouble finding it too. Then the gals in my quilt group told me to try the local Home Hardware store. I guess there were a few quilters from that group asking about it so they ordered a case. They've had some for more than a year now, but we quilters are slowly using up his stash. Hopefully he'll order more!!

I haven't found it to be scarce at all, and I've lived in 3 provinces and one territory. It's always with the plastic wrap and foil wrap. Also our quilt shop carries it and you can buy however long a length you need if it's just something small you want.

We have starch too!!! I just haven't heard of the fragrant starches that I've seen talked about in the States.

I live in Toronto and I just pick it up at my local grocery store.

They call it Freezer paper here in Ontario as well.

I have seen these comments re starch as well. I am from Canada and have no problems finding a non-aersol starch. Best Press is the most common one that I see though. It may vary from province to province as I am sure it does state to state for some things.
