Yesterday I used a piece of freezer paper, ironed on the wrong side of my material to stabilize it, so I could write on it.
When I took the paper off I laid it on a book (not on purpose) and saw it was almost totally transparent....I am always looking for paper to trace cute or neat things in magazines or the newspaper for ideas...great art work there. So this freezer paper can be used after you have used it as a stabilizer. Yes I know I could buy tracing paper but I thought this might be a penny saver for some of us....hope someone will find this useful info......hugs SG

I am always looking for more than one use out of things too. Thank you for posting this! Now if I can only remember this tip when I need it.

Prism99 03-16-2010 12:39 PM

I use new freezer paper to trace patterns. I prefer to use it with a light box underneath, but it usually works fine even without a light box. I use it a lot for machine applique.

amma 03-16-2010 12:40 PM

Thank you for this very helpful and frugal tip :D:D:D

Olivia's Grammy 03-16-2010 12:53 PM

Yea, I find remembering the great tips when I need them to be the hardest thing.

MadQuilter 03-16-2010 02:16 PM

I don't like the feel of freezer paper once it's been ironed.

craftybear 03-16-2010 02:35 PM

thanks for sharing the tip with us, we should start a thread for tips!!!

craftybear 03-16-2010 02:36 PM

Here is the thread that I started while back

Thanks for sharing that wonderful idea. I love it when I can use something for multi purposes.

CasaManana 03-16-2010 09:02 PM

I used to have the same problem remembering what that tip was.

Now I have a document created that I call Tips. It is stored in my computer so I can open it up in 2 clicks. I copy the tip I want and paste it into my document.

I've been doing it for so many years I have chapter headings so I can find what I want faster. I've got chapters for ironing/pressing, rotary cutter tips, sewing accurate 1/4" seams, squaring up, etc.

Hope that helps somebody.

I haven't got a light box so I tape it up to a bright window! Free, natural lightbox. :-D This is a great tip - could be used for tracing quilting designs to sew through, I guess - I wonder how it would tear away? Have to try it! Also, my freezer paper (Reynolds) is good for several uses - I save all my little appliqué templates and reuse them again and again. :-D

Oklahoma Suzie 03-17-2010 06:11 AM

thanks for the idea

Boston1954 03-17-2010 06:49 AM

That's terrific! I love saving money (so I can spend it on fabric) Thanks for the tip.

SewExtremeSeams 03-17-2010 09:11 AM

Wow, I have never thought of using freezer paper for stablizing something. I use it for other sewing things. Freezer paper has to be cheaper than some of that stablizers.

I also have a folder on my computer for saving tips. Most of those tips come from this quilting board.

Olivia's Grammy 03-17-2010 10:25 AM

I put a folder on my desk top so I can start saving my tips.

belmer 03-17-2010 10:54 AM

Wonderful Idea... Thankyou.

wendiq 03-18-2010 08:39 AM

I am doing a Karen Stone pattern for the New York Beauty and I use her freezer paper templates over and over.......at least five times each......

I also used to tape things up on the window ....but now we don't have to because it really is very transparent after ironing it...I have also sewed thru it ...I think it would tear away easily. but wonder if the paper dulls the needle??....hugs SG

k3n 03-18-2010 11:12 AM

Yes it would dull the needle - I do Paper Piecing and save older needles especially for that.

galatotesa 03-18-2010 05:30 PM

Another use for freezer paper. In order to hide new purchases, wrap your fabric in freezer paper and put it in the freezer!

Good one!

boosgmom 03-18-2010 08:18 PM

Won't work for me. My husband and his mother both are always in the freezer. Have to have their ice cream fix!!!! I have a split foyer and in my sewing room there is a large area under the stairs, so that is where my boxes!!!!!! are stored. He doesn't go under there. Probably afraid he will get lost in my sewing room.

zz-pd 03-18-2010 10:34 PM

thank you for the tip. Penny

Olivia's Grammy 03-19-2010 02:41 PM

You are to kind, wish you didn't live so far. Already have 2 freezers and they are full.

boosgmom 03-19-2010 02:48 PM

Olivia's Grammy 03-19-2010 03:00 PM

Food, we have a very large garden every year. I have one bedroom full of fabric.
