What is the purpose of the frosting on the back of rulers? For some reason I thought it was to prevent slipping on the fabric in place of other forms of slip-proof products. I bought one, and it slips and slides all over the place. So, I would like to know what its purpose is.

I believe the purpose is to cut down on the glare when the light hits the ruler.

Yes, it is more of an anti-glare feature. Try putting a bit of this on your ruler:

I use it and it's awesome. Nothing slips, and it's a very inexpensive solution.

On other rulers, it may only be for the glare, but on the Olfa Frosted Advantage rulers, it's for both glare and to prevent slipping. And it does work; at least it always has for me.

If that's the ruler you're using and it's slipping "all over the place", then perhaps you should try changing the way you are holding it when you cut your fabric. Try putting more pressure on your non-cutting hand and 'walking' that hand up the ruler to follow the blade as you cut. Both those methods will eliminate virtually all slippage with any ruler.

These rulers have become my choice and I wish I could replace all with them!
Additionally, their markings are finer, and easier to read IMHO.
I feel that I get a more accurate cut when using the Olfa Frosties!

I love the Olfa frosted rulers. They do not slip for me and are very easy to see things with. It's what I would get if I was getting other rulers. What a difference!

I even prefer the Olfa rulers to the Creative Grids rulers - because they are as slip resistant (in my opinion) and much easier for me to read

What kind of fabric are you working with? I haven't worked much with satins or other slippery fabrics.

I don't know how ANY of my rulers will act with the slippery fabrics.

I don't know what the purpose is, but I find them hard to use.

i am a huge fan of the frosted Olfa rulers.
i think i have all of them.
the non-slip does seem to have worn out on a couple of them, but the markings are my absolute favorite of all the other rulers i've tested.
i got some of those clear circles to put on the back, so i'll be non-slippy again on the older ones.

I bought one frosted ruler and can't really use it. It's too hard for me to see through it.
