Has anyone here ever made a "Fun & Done" quilt using Batting Buddy templates?

sewmuch 02-24-2009 08:14 AM

I have the template and have made some blocks, but haven't put them together yet. If it works will be a great idea. Using up my scraps too.

littlehud 02-24-2009 08:17 AM

What is this? Sounds interesting. More info please. :)

sewmuch 02-24-2009 08:23 AM

Fun & Done check it out

MissTami 02-24-2009 08:25 AM

Thats the one, I bought mine from Bayside.

SC 02-24-2009 09:21 AM

I watched the tute on Bayside Quilting. I've been wanting to do a QAYG. This one looks like it might be fun & simple enough for me to do. I just haven't got the hang of free motion quilting yet!

bj 02-24-2009 11:49 AM

Thanks for the post. I just ordered one. I think it'll be great that the cutting guides for the blocks are already the right size. I did a qayg a couple of years ago and had a hard time getting the batting the right size...of course, I picked a weird size for the blocks, which didn't help at all. Yea! Can't wait for it to come. I have a baby quilt on hold since I didn't know what I wanted to do. Think I'll try this. I think this would also be great for cutting out blocks/batting for rag quilts.

MissTami 02-24-2009 11:58 AM

Thank you all so much for sharing this information with me. I watch the tutorial about this and with my handicap this will be right up my ally and help me quilt better. THANK YOU ALL!!!!!

I have the fun and done chit chat pattern but haven't tried it yet. If anyone has tried it I would be interested to hear how it went. Pictures would be great too!

sewnsewer2 02-24-2009 05:55 PM

I made one (didn't buy the template tho) and it was a cinch and fun!

SC 02-24-2009 06:12 PM

Thanks everyone! I think I'll try one. Now, will it be the Easy Diamonds or Chit Chat? Decisions, decisions!

RedGarnet222 02-24-2009 07:57 PM

:) Hey I love this tool and the patterns look like they are nice. I am going to try it too. That is a nice site ... thanks for the heads up.

p.s.) I had my next door neighbor, kitty over for tea this afternoon and showed her the video, she is going to try it too! LoL! She belongs to a couple quilt groups and I am sure she is going to spread the word.

Rox17 02-25-2009 02:13 PM

Could someone who bought the templates measure them and tell us the dimensions? They would be easy to make.

Rox17 02-25-2009 07:35 PM

Well, I just ordered the fun and done patterns and I decided to just go for it and order the templates too. I figure by the time I buy the plastic and try to cut it out perfectly and probably ruin it, I will be wishing I had just bought them. I'm sure it would be possible to make the quilt without the templates, but I'm all for making things easier and quicker. Can't wait for the order to come so I can get started. If anyone has made any of the fun and done patterns, please post some pictures. I would love to see one completed. I already had the chit chat pattern and I ordered the easy diamonds and zip strip.

johnette 02-25-2009 07:54 PM

Yes, I'd love to see some pictures, too.

purplemem 02-26-2009 02:15 AM

I'm trying the Fun and Done method on the quilt I am making for my Mama. The quilt has 16 inch blocks, so I have to modify everything. I love the look of it. My block is traditional, so really all I'm doing is adding the 1 inch all around and hand quilting. I'll post pics as soon as my camera battery arrives in the mail!

Rox17 02-26-2009 04:47 AM

I was thinking after I read the last post that you could use this method on any quilt block as long as it would look ok with a sashing. I think of all the qayg methods I've been researching, this is my favorite. I like the fact that you end up with a plain back. I don't want sashing on the back of my quilt. Can't wait to try it.

Rose Marie 02-26-2009 08:16 AM

In thinking this method thru I wonder about the accurate sewing on of the top fabric. You cannot go past the batting when you sew on the design. So you have to be very accurate. Yet you trim the top fabric after you finish the block so how can you see not to sew past the batting? This worrys me. You would have to go by feel.

Rox17 02-26-2009 08:45 AM

Hmmm... That's true. Hadn't thought of that. But, if you were doing traditional blocks with quilting, either machine or hand, you could make your batting the same size as your block and the backing an inch bigger. Then quilt it. I think that would work. Need to do one and see. With the fun and done you are quilting as you piece which is different than what I was thinking about.

sewjoyce 02-26-2009 09:12 AM

I bought a pattern and the tool. It was delivered right away and looks really easy. Now I just have to find the time to make it.....

Rox17 02-26-2009 09:18 AM

Can't wait for my patterns and tool to come! I ordered from Quilters Warehouse.
First time ordering there. Hope it's quick. Prices seemed about the same as the other places.

SC 02-26-2009 09:24 AM

I decided to order the templates & the chit chat pattern. Ordered a couple of hours ago from www.wishuponaquilt.com & just recieved notification that it has shipped! That was fast! Can't wait for it to get here! :D

Rox17 02-26-2009 10:07 AM

Just got email that mine shipped too. Yeah!!!

purplemem 02-26-2009 06:10 PM

I'm using the Fun and Done method now on my 16 1/2 inch blocks. I cut the batting 18 1/2 inches. I baste with spray. It's working great. I marked the inside of my back 1 inch all around to know where to center the batting (which is cut to the block size). I don't see a problem with the batting, joining the blocks, looks pretty simple. When I finish hand quilting these two blocks I'll join them and let you know what I think. I'm going to sew a decorative stitch on the overturn just to spruce it up a bit.

Mountainquilter 02-26-2009 06:31 PM

I have never heard of this before

would like to hear more.

I can't wait to see your finished quilt. I'm having a hard time finishing up what I am working on so I can start on the fun and done quilt. But, I must be strong!

Caroltee 02-26-2009 06:47 PM

The center block is 7 1/2 x7 1/2
The outer block is 9 1/2 x9 1/2 I think you can make it any size you want. The smaller block is for the batting and the outer is front and back
What ever size you cut just make the blocks 2 inches larger than the batting. Hope this helps you.

Mountainquilter 02-26-2009 06:52 PM

that sounds easy enough, will have to try it.

it would be fun to have everyone make one and post a picture of their block/quilt

after hearing about it from friends, i watched the video on bayside quilting and decided i could do it by using a 6" square and a 9" square. since dh has cut these out of plastic for me anyway, i gave it a try for 3 blocks. it was easy to do. give it a test-run before you buy another template. i know i'm template-d out. i put it on my 'to do' list

Did this make a wider sashing?

Mountainquilter 02-27-2009 04:24 AM

This should give you another inch of sashing, it might be too much of a sashing, depending upon your design of the square.

Will be giving it a try today with some of my scraps and will let everyone know how it works.

I want to try it before I by the templates, as I have so many know that I don't use.

butterflywing 02-27-2009 07:52 AM

mountainquilter

that was the size i used because i wanted to test-drive. it did give a wider sashing, but it made it easier to turn under a little more allowance .

it can be done with any size templates, as long as you use templates with corner to corner lines. i would try with 1" but not less, because you need to turn under your 1/4", and why make it harder? n my case, i turned under more.

quiltease 02-27-2009 08:13 AM

Okay, I'm a bit confused. I understand the concept, easy to construct once the pieces are sewn on, but do you mark the batting for piece placement? How do you know exactly where to put the pieces? I do paper piecing so I understand sewing onto another fabric, or paper, or whatever, but there is always a pattern to follow.
Thanks for the help.

Debbie1 02-27-2009 08:46 AM

I just bought one this morning. Watched the video and thought it would be easy. Are you sure you don't work for Bayside????

hi sc
made fun and done with templates. used leftover bom from a group i belonged to. they come out great. don't know if i want to add borders in the same way, the regular way or not at all. In fact thinking of making my sons t-shirt the fun and done way. researching it a little more before I commit.

bev....
the way i did it was i just folded the backing diagonally and then the top the same way. i finger pressed. i put my batting right behind the top and layed it out so that the diagonal lines from the top and the backing matched up.

i just didn't want to spend more money on a specialized template.
