Garage sales ROCK!!!!
Yesterday we visited a "divorce" sale. Apparently the wife walked out and husband is selling her leftover stash (supposedly with wife's consent). The woman helping had zero knowledge of fabrics so was relying on the kindness of the quilters buying the stuff.
I got a Crabapple Hill complete kit, a Moda 2008 BOM set with finishing kit (on Ebay for over $250), a huge roll of civil war repros and a shirting roll. Lastly, a bit suitcase tin filled with 8 honey buns and the coord. fabric for a pineapple sundae quilt. Yummy. We told her to have it again and sell all the fabric by the pound to make it easier. It was so disorganized that I am sure there was more great stuff and coordinating fabric but we could not find it. I also had husband in tow and that slows me down. Today we stopped at a quilters stash reduction garage sale and I found 62 brights coord. fat quarters still in ribbon, another smaller stack with coord. yardage in bright flower colors, a bundle of37 of the colors of a tone on tone collection, a cute kit, 48 civil war fat quarters bound together from one collection and some novelty fabrics. All for about 30% of retail. So glad I found them before going to Paducah as now I will not be shopping for fabric. I am so excited to actually use this fabric. |
WOW ~ I need to tag along with you when you go shopping :)
Wow sounds like a lot of fabrics...the price sound a little high for a garage sale.
What a great day! It had to be so much fun.
You might think this was high but the quality was fantastic and it was all just what I wanted.
The fat quarters around here at shops at the best ever sales are now $1.50. These at the garage sale were around 75cents. The big kits at around 30% (or 70% off) are terrific. One was $40 and on ebay it is over $250. Around here the max sales are 50% for picked over fabrics. We have a LQS going out of business and she has only 20% off her leftovers. Good prices for me for the quality and first choice. |
wow, if I was getting divorced (unlikely after 31 years!!) DH and I would be fighting over who gets to keep the fabric!!
Wow take me with you next time you go!!

30% retail is high? |
Here is how I found them:
Sale #1 was a note on our guild facebook page. It was kind of hard to find and a drive but we combined the trip with a fiber fair excursion. Sale #2 was on craigslist. Not well described but I took a chance. Craigslist is wonderful. Several years ago I got fat quarters for a quarter each and got around 240 of them at one sale off craigslist. We live in a city of 1 million and in the midwest so there are lots of quilters and stores and stuff. About 4 times a year I find a terrific sale. Some are toads but that is the way for all garage type sales. |
You had a GOOD day! Congratulations!
I love finding a winner. I got about $100 in great quality batik charms for $20 today.
you must be doing your happy dance since you found all those treasures

My sister and I have always loved going "garage sailing", as we call it. What is someone's junk is another person's treasure. I can't tell you how much treasure I've picked up at garage sales! Resale and Charity shops as well! Sometimes I "score" and sometimes I come home empty handed. Nothing is a bargain if you have no use for it, that's my motto. I'm very picky. My sister and I learned from our Mother. She was the best!

We never have garage sales like that around meGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
So cool! What a haul!!!!
I wonder if there is another garage sale on the other side of town with a bunch of woodworking tools! ROFL

You did good! My hubby says if I ever divorce him, he is keeping the quilting stuff. That is only because he knows I'm not going without it. hehehehe!
I'm envious - sounds like you had a great time. I love the Crabapple Hill designs and kits - just hate to pay the price. Wish they had those kinds of garage sales in my neck of the woods!
What a haul!!! There are never sales like that around here. I guess everyone is keeping their stuff!!! I started looking for a few things last summer, and every sale I went to just had junk. The prices were high, too. I guess everyone around here thinks their junk is everyone else's "treasure". It is fun though.

I agree with susie-susie-susie lucky you

Yup, garage, rummage, yard sales, they're all wonderful places to find fabrics. What I don't like though is the sale where the seller thinks her fabric is worth more than she paid for it. I've left and headed to the next sale and found wonderful buys. Most of the buyers were still at the other sale. I came away with boxes of Threads magazines at .10/each and fabric $1/pc w/3 yd+ each. I can hardly wait til it's garage sale time again. We had snow yesterday so spring is still a bit away.

The reader who said prices are a little high for a garage sale might have done what I did at first. I read "all at
30% OFF retail". On re-reading I saw it said "30% OF retail". Wow, you got the buy of the auction. Enjoy! (I believe, however, you might still find something you need in Paducah LOL) |
I'll go with you just about anytime. Not far from you. Too much fun!
Why can't I ever find garage sales like that? lol. I have found a few sales with scraps, but not much yardage. I'll keep looking.
Wow, that is great, I never see any sales like that listed here....but I really don't go on Craigs list very often, i guess I need to peruse that more often!!
I don't get time to go to yard sales and flea markets very much, but would like a find like yours. Congrats on all your treasure.
Great finds! Congrads! :) :)
I LOVE going to garage sales. I've found some great deals on quilting fabric and such, but not lately. yesterday, Dh and I went to two community yard sales. They both even had maps. We did a lot of walking and getting in and out of the car, and found a few good things, but no good sewing or quilting type stuff. It was so hot that all I really got was a sunburn and very tired. Hopefully next weekend will be better.
Great find! Some times I get lucky and find good stuff. Love it!
You did good! Next time take me?????
I want to go shopping with you!
What a great haul!
