I have an Elna Heritage that has never seen the inside of a repair shop (my bad) I try to keep it clean on my own, etc., but know I should take it in for a thorough cleaning. Can anyone tell me if I'm looking at $50 or $500 bucks?

Eddie 07-01-2009 05:02 PM

I have no idea, but will be interested to see what others say. Mine is new and only a couple of months old, but I've been riding it like an outlaw running from the law, so am wondering if it needs a break and tuneup. Not to hijack your thread, but how often should a machine go to the shop for a tuneup?

sandiphi 07-01-2009 05:20 PM

I've had my cleaned for $130-$150., I have a Husqvarna, Designer 1. I take mine in yearly.

amma 07-01-2009 05:31 PM

Ouch!!! Is that a cleaning and a tune-up...maybe something else too???? (I say hopefully)
Mine are both two years old...haven't been in yet...but I know it's time. I was hoping for just a cleaning it would be $50 or less :? :? :?

2wheelwoman 07-01-2009 05:32 PM

Eddie - you're not hijacking, 'cause I need the answer to your question as well. Also, when the machine does go in for an 'annual physical' how long is it usually in the shop?

littlehud 07-01-2009 05:35 PM

I want to know too. I have one that probably needs to go in for a cleaning.

Metanoia 07-01-2009 05:50 PM

My janome centre charges about AU$70 + parts for a service

I think last time I put it in on a thursday evening and got it back either the saturday or the next thursday. I work full time so getting in to the shop was harder for me.

People say you should go in yearly, but it depends on the use of your machine. Mine had never seen a service until about 18-24 months ago (my grandma gave it to me about 7 years ago and I am still learning what to do, but it does see more sewing these days than it used to).

I have a janome MC7500

mgshaw 07-01-2009 05:53 PM

When I took my Bernina in last November (I think) they checked everything and did a cleaning and it only cost me $40. They had to do some adjustment to the foot control but everything else was fine. They told me as long as I cleaned it regularly, once a year was fine. I think it was only there less than a week.

kluedesigns 07-01-2009 06:04 PM

a day of beauty for my machine runs $75.

b.zang 07-01-2009 06:07 PM

Try taking to the place where you bought it. My dealer does not charge for check-ups. I dropped mine off in the mid-morning and picked it up at the end of the day.

I have another machine not bought at that dealer, and he charged me $50 plus parts. Again, another one-day affair.

sewmuch 07-01-2009 06:19 PM

I have a Janome and last checkup was $85.00. Every couple years I take it in for a tuning.

pocoellie 07-01-2009 06:35 PM

I have 2 elnas, roughly $70-$95 plus parts, recommend yearly, even as much as I use mine.

tlrnhi 07-01-2009 06:39 PM

I took my Kenmore to the shop and was charged $150, but $25 of that was so I could get it back the same day. It was cleaned, oiled, tuned and whatever else needed to be done to it.

omak 07-01-2009 07:07 PM

I pay $60 + parts for cleaning and tune up.
I get the machine back in a week, even if I take four in at a time.
Even if the machine only needs a $13 part, my mechanic calls me and asks (when he gets to know me better <g> he won't, but I would expect that from any responsible businessman).

Ducky 07-01-2009 07:37 PM

Here in Denver I was quoted $120 for total tune-up and cleaning....and it takes about a week to get my machine back. I haven't done it yet, as I can't go that long

That is why I haunt thrift stores and garage sales ... for $35 or less, I have a variety of machines so that I am not out of tools while others are being repaired. Most of the machines I find in the thrift stores just had families that didn't know what their mom had ...

ScubaK 07-01-2009 08:14 PM

Here is Wa State it is about 100& to 120$ for a checkup, servicing.
The sewing machine shop frequently has a coupon for 25$ off

canmitch1971 07-01-2009 08:16 PM

I paid about $75 here in Canada to have my Janome 6500 serviced.

sewnsewer2 07-01-2009 08:51 PM

I think around here it runs around $75.

Lisa T 07-01-2009 09:37 PM

Here it is around $75.

ETA- I am near Green Bay, WI- that's where I went last time. (This is a fairly LCOL area.)

Rose Marie 07-01-2009 10:10 PM

My viking Sapphire ran 80 dollars. It was 2 yrs old before I took it in for serviceing.

mic-pa 07-02-2009 02:57 AM

I think I paid $150. last time my was in the shop and it needs to go again. They do recommend a yearly check=up and I have 3 Janome's. My 3500 has never been back. I just keep it clean. Marge

sandpat 07-02-2009 03:31 AM

I've been quoted 75-80 bucks for the recommended annual servicing for my Bernina. Mine is scheduled for its 1st one (which was included free when I bought the machine) this month. They said I could wait for it if I wanted...(they'd love for me to just shop that long) I think I'll try to coordinate it with a class so he can do the servicing while I actually learn something. The shop isn't all that close to home.

lfw045 07-02-2009 04:08 AM

I know I'm going to probably get slammed for this one but here goes.....what's new......rofl. I have had my Singer since 1979 and it has gone through a lot of sewing since then. The gears are encased with oil as per the instruction book that came with it, it never needs oiling. I keep the lint out of it myself on a regular basis and it is a workhorse. It has never (thank the Lord) seen the inside of a shop.

I just cleaned and oiled my aunt's 1960 - something Singer Touch and Sew and it sews beautifully........still and I know she worked it on a regular basis.

Love my Singers! I have to say though, I just bought my daughter a brand new Janome under $200 and fell in love with that one myself......lol!

krabadan 07-02-2009 04:09 AM

The charge around here for servicing is $79.95 - with a four-month guarantee

weste 07-02-2009 04:35 AM

I have a 25 year old Bernina 1130 and have never had it serviced. What you want to bet it will go out on me because I posted this. lol

Mamagus 07-02-2009 04:53 AM

My Janome cost 90.00 CAD and it was one day service. He wants to see it again this summer but I don't think he will. I bought some pressurized air for delicate computer parts and give the bobbin case a clean out every month or so. Unless it starts giving problems with tension and feed (which I know I can't fix) it will be here at home where I can see it and talk to it everyday.

I'd advise anyone with a new machine to take it in during the warranty period. Because you know how sticky companies can be if the machine servicing schedule wasn't followed!

sewjoyce 07-02-2009 04:59 AM

The cost here for my Bernina is $60.00. They recommend a yearly "check-up". Need to take my 440 in -- it's over 2 yrs. old and hasn't been serviced   -- just hate to do without her for that long even though I have another Bernina....

Esqmommy 07-02-2009 05:49 AM

My last service was $150

Pam B 07-02-2009 05:58 AM

Cost in my area: about $70 (central IN)
Frequency: I think that depends upon how much you use your machine. I have one machine that I use the most and I try to take it in about once a year. I keep it cleaned out with canned air. I have a 2nd machine that I do not use as often and I only take it about every other year.
I would think the kind of fabric you use alot of might make a difference, as well. I take my machine to the LQS where I purchased it. I love my dealer and all the people in that store!

Somebunny 07-02-2009 06:01 AM

My Hus/Vikg Signature cost me $150, and took about a week to get back. That was at the dealer it was purchased from. They recomended it come in once a year. I think that is too much money. I would like to clean it myself, but they said it would void my warranty. I've seen machines not cleaned for years and the lint build up can be bad. What to do???

May in Jersey 07-02-2009 06:04 AM

I've paid 75 to 100. Took my Pfaff to place that charged 75 and had to bring it back twice and the problem came back again almost immediately. Went there also because it's closer to home and shop sells fabrics. Should have taken it to shop where I bought it but didn't because it was too far away and no fabric there. So what did I save by going to the cheaper place twice? Nothing. Anyway, I've upgraded my Pfaff and it has a 5 year warranty which includes annual checkups. I do a lot of sewing, clean the lint out whenever I change the bobbin, etc. I've found that an annual maintenance keeps my machines running smoothly.

I took my Vikings in to Vegas and was charged $75 each just for a cleaning and checkup. It was suggested I bring them in once a year, if I use them a lot. Took one of them to another dealer, in another state, three months later for a 'problem' and was charged $60 for cleaning, after I told him NOT to clean it (he really didn't clean it because I found a ton of lint in it when I got it back :x ). I've had my Featherweight cleaned for $25 close to home. It all depends on the type of machine and where you take it. Make sure you clean out the lint at LEAST after every project.

Here in the DC Suburbs, the Viking Dealerships have an independent repair person. He picks up once a week, and delivers same day the following week. Base price is $89.95 - and includes all labor (parts, if any are needed, is extra).

Recommendation is that you take the machines in yearly - to have everything checked out, cleaned, and adjusted where needed.

Betty Boop 07-02-2009 10:23 AM

When I take mine to my dealer, the first yearly cleaning is free and the yearly cleaning from then on is $59.00. I have never had any repairs, just the cleaning.

beshearskk 07-02-2009 10:25 AM

The Quilt Shop in Boone, NC has a guy that does it for $50. I'm sure parts would be extra. I think if you clean it real well yourself regularly you only need to have a pro do it once a year. If you're lazy and use cheap thread you should probably get to know your repairman because you're going to see him more than you can imagine.

Roberta 07-02-2009 10:26 AM

I had a Brother and I paid $60 for a through cleaning and check-up. My new machine, used but new to me, will be taken to the quilt shop where I bought it. It's a Janome and they fix them and give you a loaner until the work is done. I'm in central Maine so prices may be lower then other parts of the country.

pc1camp 07-02-2009 10:34 AM

The last time I took mine in for a computerized Bernina, it was $130 I believe and that was last year. Non-computerized was less.

I had my designer 1 cleaned with a tune up two weeks ago and it cost me $89 that part. The total was $137, but I had a few things that needed to fixed like my light bulb has gone out, my needle threader was not in line to thread my needle. Little things like that. It all depends on the brand of machine and your dealer.

Hi everyone,
We just had a guild meeting last month where our local sewing machine/fabric store came and gave us a general maintenance presentation on top loading and side loading bobbin machines and sergers. Basic cleaning and a few pointers when you get into trouble with your machines. Also advise for those with the newer machines with computers in them.
As to an answer to your question about servicing - they recommended a yearly cleaning, tension adjustment and tune up which runs about $50. Our instructor shared some really funny and some horror stories on machines that had come in for servicing. Some of these machines had been used almost constanting for years before they just stopped working and they wondered why. In cleaning the machine they found all sorts of stuff/lint/threads - unbelievable. Imagine a ball of lint the size of your fist found inside one machine that had been used for over 20 years without every being cleaned. Wonder it was still working at all. I have 4 different machines for different applications and they all go in at different times of the year but each of them go in at least once a year. One of them is now over 50 years old and still goes through six layers of denim without missing a stitch.
